OBITUARIES
LEWIS C. WILLIAMSON
Businessman, farmer, Veteran

CHADBOURN - Lewis Carl Williamson, 86, died Sunday, Dec. 19, 2004 at Columbus County Hospital.

A native of Columbus County, he was the son of the late Mattie and Joseph Vance Williamson. He was a retired businessman, farmer and was a veteran of WWII.

Final rites were conducted Wednesday, Dec. 22 at Smyrna Baptist Church by the Reverends Ted Reidel and Ricky Donaldson. Interment was in Columbus Memorial Park. Worthington Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

He is survived by his wife, Mollie L. Williamson of the home; a daughter: Dianne Williamson of Spartanburg, S.C.; two sons: Dennis Carl Williamson and wife Lois of Chadbourn and Wayne Williamson and wife Vickie of Evergreen; a brother: Vance “Pug” Williamson of Chadbourn; three grandchildren: Shawna W. Williams and husband Mike of Ocean Isle, Walter Lewis Williamson of Evergreen, Ron Fields and wife Theresa of Whiteville; and four grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Wallace Williamson, Sammy Bellamy, Steve Ivey, Britt Leggett, Wayne Gore and Gary Ward.

  

VERSHELIA P. JACOBS

CHARLOTTE – Vershelia Persavier Jacobs, 42, died Saturday, Dec. 18, 2004 at Carolina Medical Center.

Final rites were conducted Wednesday, Dec. 22 at St. James Missionary Baptist Church, Lake Waccamaw, by the Reverends Ronald Campbell, Graylen Mitchell and Jason Whitfield. Burial will be at a later date. Gaskins Funeral Home of Clarkton handled the arrangements.

She is survived by two brothers: Anthony Jacobs Jr. of Wilmington and Ervin Eugene Jacobs of Lake Waccamaw; three sisters: Dorothy Jeanette Moore of Raleigh, Jeanette Graham of Fayetteville and Rachel Jacobs.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family at 6808 Johnsdale Road, Raleigh, N.C.

 

NATALIE R. HOUSAND
Nurse’s assistant at Shoreland Healthcare

TABOR CITY – Natalie Renne Housand, 20, passed away Sunday, Dec. 19, 2004.

She was born Nov. 11, 1984 in Columbus County, a daughter of Patrick Reuben Housand and Bonita Wright Housand. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Tabor City. She was a 2002 graduate of South Columbus High School and attended Southeastern Community College. She was employed with Shoreland Healthcare in Whiteville as a certified nurse’s assistant and ward clerk. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Eugene Housand.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Dec. 22 from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Tabor City by Elder Alan Duncan. Interment was in the Spivey Cemetery. Ward Funeral Home of Loris, S.C. handled the arrangements.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by a brother: Addison Housand of Tabor City; paternal grandmother: Sarah E. Housand of Tabor City; maternal grandparents: Buddy and Janet Wright of Tabor City.

  

CARL G. CAMPBELL
Commission agent with
Greyhound Lines, Veteran

FLORENCE, S.C. – Carl Gerald “Jerry” Campbell, 80, died Sunday, Dec. 19, 2004 in a Florence hospital after a lengthy illness.

He was born in Luverne, Ala., a son of the late Euell and Freda Rodgers

Campbell. He retired in 1989 as a commission agent for Greyhound Lines, having served that company for 40 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII. At the conclusion of the war, he joined the U.S. Army Reserves and retired after 30 years of combined service. During his military service, he was awarded the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star, the Combat Infantry Badge, the POW Medal and the Meritorius Service Badge with the Oak Leaf Cluster. He was a member of the VFW Post #3181, a member of the Hampton Lodge #204 AFM and was a member of the First Baptist Church.

Final rites were conducted Tuesday, Dec. 21 in the Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home Chapel. Interment was in Mt. Hope Cemetery with military honors. Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home of Florence, S.C. handled the arrangements.

He is survived by his wife, Josephine “Jo” Pierce Campbell of the home; a daughter: Carla White of Florence, S.C.; a son: Jay Campbell of Florence, S.C.; two sisters: Bonnie Franklin of Montgomery, Ala. and Jean Piper of Belding, Mich.; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army, 2210 Hoffmeyer Road, Florence, S.C. 29501 or to a charity of one’s choice.

 

ELIZABETH J. BAKER

TABOR CITY – Elizabeth Jarrott Hemingway Baker, 61, died Sunday, Dec. 19, 2004 at Loris Community Hospital, Loris, S.C.

She was the daughter of the late Rufus and Sussie Jarrott of Tabor City.

Final rites will be conducted Thursday, Dec. 23 at 2 p.m. at Great Grace Non-Denominational Church in Tabor City with Pastor, Bishop Anthony Gerald Sr. giving the eulogy. Interment will be in the Columbus County Singing Union Cemetery. Westside Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

She is survived by her husband, Artemus Baker of the home; two daughters: Selena Baker of the home and Rosie Baker of Fort Benning, Ga.; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

 

GEORGE FIELDS

DELCO – George Fields died Friday, Dec. 17, 2004 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Final rites were conducted Wednesday, Dec. 22 at Evergreen AMEZ Church. Interment was in the Fields Cemetery #2, Delco. Jordan Funeral Home of Wilmington handled the arrangements.

 

GARRETT L. BRESS

RIEGELWOOD – Garrett Lamont Bress died Monday, Dec. 20, 2004 at Columbus County Hospital.

Final rites will be conducted Friday, Dec. 24 at noon at Mt. Pleasant AMEZ Church. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Jordan Funeral Home of Wilmington is handling the arrangements.

 

ETHEL B. SHAW
Retired teacher

WHITEVILLE – Ethel Beatrice Brintle Shaw, 90, died Monday, Dec. 20, 2004 at Columbus County Hospital.

She was a retired school teacher from the Whiteville City School system and was a member of the Whiteville United Methodist Church where she was a member of the men and ladies Worthington Bible class. She was also a member of the Whiteville Garden Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, Horace L. Shaw.

Final rites were conducted Wednesday, Dec. 22 at Whiteville United Methodist Church by the Rev. David Benson. Interment was in Whiteville Memorial Cemetery. McKenzie Mortuary handled the arrangements.

She is survived by a son, Horace Michael Shaw of Whiteville; and two grandchildren.

Pallbearers were David Hooks, Dial Gray, Clyde Burns, Alex Saunders, James Pait, Carlton Prince and Kenwood Royal.

Honorary pallbearers were members of the men and ladies Worthington Bible class.

 

WILLIE MYLES JR.
Auto mechanic, Veteran

CHADBOURN – Willie Myles Jr. died Monday, Dec. 13, 2004 at McGuire Veteran’s Medical Center, Richmond, Va.

He was an auto mechanic and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Final rites were conducted Saturday, Dec. 18 at St. Matthews Primitive Baptist Church in Quincy, Fla. Interment was in the church cemetery. Bradwell Mortuary handled the arrangements. D & A Funeral Service is announcing for the family.

He is survived by his wife, Bertha Morrison Myles of Chadbourn; a son: Willie M. Myles of Washington, D.C.; three daughters: Sonya M. Rumph of Cary, Reneé Myles and Rosalind Myles, both of Baltimore, Md.; a brother: Allen Myles of Quincy, Fla.; and five grandchildren.

 

MARY M. JACKSON

CHADBOURN – Mary M. Jackson died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004 at Columbus County Hospital.
