WHITEVILLE James Bradley “J.B.” Reaves Jr., 85, died Saturday, April 1, 2006 at home following a lengthy illness. He was the son of the late James Bradley and Kate Gore Reaves.
He was owner and operator of Reaves Amusements in Whiteville, until his health began to decline, at which time he turned the business over to his son.
He served in the United States Navy throughout World War II, and he was a member of the Whiteville Lions Club.
A private memorial service was held on Saturday, April 8 at the Chapel of Brunswick Funeral Home, with the Rev. Stephen Bailey officiating. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date. Brunswick Funeral Service of Shallotte is handling the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Macon Reaves of the home; a son, James Bradley Reaves III and wife Maria of Whiteville; a daughter, Dr. Gerri Reaves and husband Dr. James Brock of Ft. Myers, Fla.; a sister, Ruth R. Johnson, of Whiteville; and two grandchildren, James Bradley Reaves IV and Kennedy Gray Reaves.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Richard Sprunt Reaves, and two sisters, Geraldine “Jean” R. Michael and Wilma R. Dicus.

BOARDMAN John Turner Jr., 79, died Thursday, April 6, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare in Whiteville.
Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by S&L-Goodwill Funeral Home of Whiteville.
Family will receive friends at 76 Turner Dr., Boardman.

BLADENBORO Lonnie A. “L.A.” Sessoms, 80, died Friday, April 7, 2006 at Southeastern Medical Center in Lumberton.
He was predeceased by a wife, Bonnie Sessoms, a daughter, Connie Carroll, and a step-son, Gene Barr.
He was employed by N.C. Department of Transportation and was a farmer.
Final rites were held Monday, April 10 at Galeed Baptist Church in Bladenboro with the Rev. Bruce Cannon officiating. Burial followed in Whites Creek Church Cemetery in Clarkton. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown handled the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Jewell B. Sessoms; a son, Douglas Sessoms of Fayetteville; five daughters, Gail Carroll of Dublin, Peggy Hester of Bracey, Va., Janice Strickland of Clarkton, Elaine Sessoms of Elizabethtown, and Doris Mote of Harrells; two brothers, Floyd Sessoms and Curtis Sessoms, both of Elizabethtown; 19 grandchildren, and 31 great-grandchildren.

BLADENBORO Dora Guyton Hester, 83, died Friday, April 7, 2006 at Sunbridge Nursing Home, here. She was the widow of Marvin E. Hester.
Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, April 10 at Oak Grove Original Freewill Baptist Church in Bladenboro. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include a son, Marvin “M.J.” Hester Jr. of Bladenboro; four daughters, Bonnie Dove and Julie Allen, both of Bladenboro, Annie Lou Cummings of Holly Ridge, Joseph Neill of Elizabethtown, a brother, Charles W. Guyton of Bladenboro; 15 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and 24-great-great-grandchildren.

WHITEVILLE Jerris Linwood Lacewell, 52, died Saturday, April 8, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare.

DOROTHY B. THOMPSON
WHITEVILLE Dorothy Elizabeth Thompson, 94, of the White Marsh community died Friday, April 7, 2006 in Woodhaven Nursing Home in Lumberton.
She as born Oct. 4, 1911 in Columbus County, the daughter of the late Leon Newton Baldwin and Lena Bell High Baldwin, She was the widow of Matthew Whitaker Thompson. She was a member of White Marsh Baptist Church.
Final rites were held Sunday, April 9 at Peacock’s Chapel In The Pines by the Rev. Carroll Fonvielle. Interment was in Peacock’s Columbus Memorial Park. Peacocks Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.
Survivors include two sons, Dr. Marvin W. Thompson of Lumberton, and D. Horace Thompson of Burgaw; three granddaughters, two grandsons, two great-grandchildren; a sister, Ina Thompson of Lake Waccamaw.
She was preceded ind eath by three sisters, Mildred Baldwin Ward, Hilda Baldwin Reitz, Theldene Baldwin Haddock; three brothers, Carlisle Baldwin, Dewitt Baldwin, and Junious Baldwin.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Boy’s & Girls’ Home of N.C., P.O. Box 127, Lake Waccamaw, N.C. 28450 or a charity of one’s choice.
CLARKTON Angeline Pappas Robinson died Friday, April 7, 2006 at her home. She was preceded in death by her husband Wiliford Lee Robinson in January 2005.
The family will have a private memorial service at a later date. McKenzie Mortuary is handling the arrangements.

FAYETTEVILLE -- Eleanor “Pimp” McNeill, 92, died Tuesday, April 4, 2006 at her residence. She as the sister of the late Mildred Moore of Whiteville. She was a retired teacher.
Graveside services will be held at noon on Tuesday, April 11 at Millican Cemetery in Whiteville. There will be no public viewing. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

CHADBOURN -- Kecia Lyndell Freeman, 36, died Wednesday, April 5, 2006 at New Hanover Regional Healthcare in Wilmington.
Final rites were held Monday, April 10 at S&L Funeral Home Chapel in Fair Bluff with Minister K.T. McGeachy officiating. Burial followed in Belvue Cemetery in Chadbourn. S&L Funeral Home of Fair Bluff handled the arrangements.
Survivors include her mother, Ardie Freeman; a daughter, Shaneilla Freeman; a sister, Jacqueline Freeman; four brothers, Edwin Freeman of Fayetteville, Rocky Freeman, Michael Flowers, and George Flowers Jr., all of New York; her grandfather, Robert Freeman, and step-grandmother, Barbara Freeman.

FAIR BLUFF -- Elouise Johnson, 66, died Wednesday, April 5, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare.
Final rites were held Sunday, April 9 at Piney Grove Baptist Church in Nichols, S.C. with the Rev. Thurman Gerald officiating. Burial followed in Stephen/Wright Cemetery in Tabor City. S&L Funeral Home of Fair Bluff handled the arrangements.
Survivors include her mother, Lizzie Kate George of Nichols, S.C.; five daughters, Bobbie Jean Washington and Brigitte Johnson, both of Green Sea, S.C., Sandra Dean Howard of Nichols, S.C., Gloria Walters of Fair Bluff, and Angela Rutledge of Loris, S.C.; a son, Don Johnson of Fair Bluff; six step-children, Gail Bethea, James Earl Davis, Andrew Neil Davis, Teresa Lawson, Michael Davis, and Mageline Myers; five sisters, Fayequsta Montgomery, Glendora George and Wanda Campbell, all of Fair Bluff, Diane Lee of Green Sea, S.C., and Queen Ester Ballard of Rochester, N.Y.; four brothers, Forester George of Loris, S.C., John Luther George of Fair Bluff, Lorenzo George of Mt. Airy, and Leon George of Dobson; 18 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren.

TABOR CITY -- Elton Cleo Stevens, 69, died at his home following a sudden illness. Born July 29, 1936 in Loris, S.C. Stevens was the son of the late Rev. Lester Sullivan Stevens and the late Thelma Irene Hardee Stevens.
He was an Army veteran, worked for Penn Ventilation Co. where he retired after 17 years, and was a member of the Jones Street Baptist Church in Tabor City.
Gravesides services were held Friday, April 7 at Stevens Family Cemetery in Loris, S.C., officiated by Dr. David Coleman and Rev. Kenneth Smith. Hardwick Funeral Home of Loris, S.C. handled the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Verlyn P. Stevens of Tabor City; a son, Joey Stevens of Tabor City; three daughters, Judy Stanley and Patty S. Buffkin, both of Tabor City, and Cynthia S. Nelson of Whiteville; a sister, Eva Mae Rabon of Loris, S.C.; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by one brother, Donald Stevens.
CHADBOURN Billy Lee Williamson, 70, died Wednesday, April 5, 2005 at Columbus Regional Healthcare. He was the son of the late James Lloyd and Sadie Hammond Williamson.
Final rites were held Saturday, April 8 at Williamson’s Crossroads Baptist Church with the Reverends Linzy Nance and Vernon Williamson officiating. Interment followed in Chadbourn Memorial Cemetery. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn handled the arrangements.
He is survived by two daughters, Amy W. Noble of Greensboro and Lee Ann Williamson of Whiteville; a brother, Johnny L. Williamson of Pinetops; a sister, Shelby W. Underwood of Fuquay Varina; and two grandchildren.
JOHN W. CAPPS JR.

WILMINGTON John William Capps Jr., 75, died Sunday, April 9, 2006 in Cypress Point Nursing Home here.
He was born in New Hanover County, the son of the late John W. Capps Sr. and the late Mary Elizabeth Simmons Capps. He was the widower of Annie Lou Smith Capps.
Capps was a veteran of the Korean War and served in the U.S. Army. He formerly owned and operated Capp’s Vending in Pender County.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by Peacock’s Chapel In The Pines.
Survivors include a son, John William Capps III of Wilmington; a daughter, Cynthia Flowers of Hampstead; a stepson, Dennis Smith of Wilmington; two stepdaughters, Barbara Ann Vick of Rocky Point, and Marion Hearn of Wilmington; a brother, Bennie Capps of Topsail Beach; a sister, Mary Jane Frazier of Mississippi; 11 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
A memorial service and monument unveiling will be held on Saturday, April 29 at 11 a.m. at Haw Bluff Baptist Church Cemetery for Harvey H. Horrell.
Horrell was on board The Battleship USS Arizona on Dec. 7, 1941 when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor.
