The Whiteville City Schools board is considering school uniforms next year, a move that some school systems believe helps alleviate a number of problems.
Teachers say the way many students dress is a distraction baggy pants about to fall to the ankles, too much skin, tight skirts, etc. The city system has a dress code, but teachers must spend too much time trying to enforce violations.
We believe school uniforms may be worth trying next year but the public needs to see some comparative data from other school systems first. Beaufort County is trying school uniforms in one of its districts now. While there hasn’t been time to see what the effect has been on test scores, disciplinary suspensions are down.
We believe that Central may be a good school to test uniforms. Middle school is the age where kids hit puberty and clothes can be a major distraction. Also with uniforms, bandanas and “colors” would be easily spotted and dealt with. Uniforms would also clearly show who is a student and who is trespassing.
School uniforms have worked well in some places, and with recent issues at Central, they may be a good fit there as well.
