| Pierce gets drafted by WBA’s Anderson Heat Former Whiteville High basketball standout Michael Pierce was drafted recently by the Anderson S.C., Heat of the World Basketball Association after completing his collegiate career at Coker College in Hartsville, S.C. Pierce was a starting guard for Whiteville High’s back-to-back state 2A championship teams of 1999 and 2000. He was selected Columbus County Boys Basketball Player of the Year in 2000. The 6-foot-2 Pierce was the 11th pick in the fourth round of the WBA free agent draft, the 44th player selected overall. Pierce, the son of Catherine Pierce of Whiteville, has played the last two seasons at Coker after a season at Brunswick Community College. During his senior season, he led the Cobras in scoring with an 11 points-per-game average and in rebounding with a 5.4 average. He shot 48 percent from the field and 38 percent from behind the 3-point line. Coker is a member of the Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference (NCAA Division II). The Anderson Heat is one of 12 teams that play in the Atlanta-based WBA. The WBA will open its third season this month and will run through June. League playoffs will be held in July.
