OBITUARIES
W. THOMAS HARRELSON JR.
Veteran

TABOR CITY – W. Thomas Harrelson Jr., 82, died Thursday, April 13, 2006 in Loris Hospital. He was born in Nash County, the son of the late Wilson Thomas Harrelson Sr. and Lizzie Mae Belle Harrelson Harrelson.

He was a United States Army veteran.

Final rites were held Saturday, April 15 at Clarendon Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Ray Best with interment following in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Tabor City. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.

He is survived by his wife, Margie Mills Harrelson of Tabor City; a daughter, Donna Harrelson Hammond and husband Maxie O. Hammond of Harrisburg; a grandson, Justin Hammond.

 

MABEL COLEMAN

THOMASVILLE – Mabel Coleman’s earthly journey came to an end on April 14, 2006 when her Heavenly Father informed our mother and grandmother that her heavenly mansion was completed.

Coleman’s earthly journey began Feb. 17, 1920 in Columbus County when she was born to the late Thomas and Georgia Jones Brock.

She was a faithful member of Cedar Lodge Baptist Church for as long as health allowed. A faithful prayer warrior, she was a member of the Senior Adult Bible Class.

She was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

On May 4, 1935 she married Brock M. Coleman, a marriage of 60 years, until his death in October of 1995.

Funeral services were held Sunday, April 16 in the Chapel of J.C. Green and Sons Funeral Home in Thomasville with the Reverends Max Evington and Gary Myers officiating. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, April 18 at 11 a.m. at Greenlawn Cemetery in Chadbourn with the Rev. Ronald Hester officiating. The family will receive friends at Worthington Funeral Home in Chadbourn on Monday evening from 6-8 p.m. J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home of Thomasville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include her seven children, daughters, Opal C. Suggs of Thomasville, Betty C. Hester (Ronald) of Bladenboro, Peggy J. Fillingter (Thomas) of Columbia, S.C., Brockie C. Hogston (Roy Thomas), Sandra C. Fayne (James), and Karen C. Alexander (Joe Don), all of Thomasville; and a son, Vollie A. Coleman (Hilda) of Bladenboro; 15 grandchildren, one step-grandchild, 27 great-grandchildren, seven step-great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, brothers, Thomas V. Brock (Alice) of Hartsville, S.C., William K. Brock (Carol) of Whiteville, and Frederick A. Brock (Betty Ann) of Winston-Salem; sisters, Effie Robbins and Pauline Clewis of Whiteville, and Mildred Thompson of Yaupon Beach.

BOBBY LEE SMITH
Veteran and N.C. Forest Service supervisor

WHITEVILLE – Bobby Lee Smith, 74, of the Western Prong community, joined the Lord after a brief illness, April 14, 2006. He was born July 24, 1931 in Atmore, Ala. to Roy and Fannie Boggan Smith.

At the age of 18 he enlisted in the Marine Corps serving with distinction throughout the Korean and Vietnam Wars. From 1966-1969 he had the distinct honor of serving President Johnson while assigned to Camp David. As Senior NCOIC in 1970 he was selected to train equipment mechanics and operators at Courthouse Bay in Camp Lejeune’s Engineering School.

Following a six year tour of duty he was assigned to Quantico, Va. as NCOIC in charge of all heavy equipment testing for the Marine Corp where he remained until his retirement in 1978 at the rank of E-9 Master Gunnery Sergeant after 28 years.

His second career brought him to a position as District Equipment Supervisor for the Whiteville District North Carolina Forest Service in 1978. For 15 years he worked diligently at promoting and establishing a professional, conscientious and safe preventive maintenance program that was recognized among the best in the state.

He was a member of Western Prong Baptist Church where he served as Deacon and various other positions for the Lord. But above all, he was a loving husband, father, and a very good man who loved and served God and his country proudly throughout his life. He also was an avid bird hunter.

Funeral rites were held Monday, April 17 at Western Prong Baptist Church with the Rev. Warren Hill officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. McKenzie Mortuary of Whiteville handled the arrangements.

He is survived by his wife, Edith Emory Smith of the home, a sister, Willornease Wooten of Atmore, Ala., a brother, Gladden Smith of Atmore, Ala.; five daughters, Linda S. Lennon her husband Lloyd of Western Prong, Brenda S. Langston and her husband Chuck of Greer, S.C., Wendy S. Stone of Selma, Felicia D. Smith of Birch River, W. Va., Pam O. Murphy of Tampa, Fla.; grandchildren, Megan Buning, Katie Murphy, Chip Lennon, Bobby Lee Lennon, Andrew Stone, MacKenzie Langston, and Maggie his beloved and devoted bird dog.

Pallbearers were Chip Lennon, Bobby Lee Lennon, Andrew Stone, Shaun Buning, Brandon Lynn and Anthony Wayne.

 

CHARLES L. ALLEN
Retired principal and
director band

BLADENBORO – Charles L. Allen, 75, died at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville on Friday, April 14, 2006.

Allen was the band director at Bladenboro High School for many years as well as retired principal of Bladenboro High School.

Final rites will be held Monday, April 17 at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Bladenboro with the Reverends Bert Young and Harold Shirley presiding. Burial will follow in Pinecrest Cemetery in Bladenboro.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Peggy Allen, a son, Charles Allen of Ocean Isle Beach; two daughters, Cathy Gunter of Raleigh, and Carolyn Mack of Wake Forest; and five grandchildren.

U.S. NOBLES

LUMBERTON – U.S. Nobles, 88, died Friday, April 14, 2006 at Southeastern Regional Medical Center here. He was the son of the late Hiran and Ludie Norris Nobles. He was the widow of Rose Carter Nobles.

Graveside services were held Monday, April 17 at Chadbourn Memorial Cemetery. Worthington Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Survivors include a sister, Gertie N. Miller of Chadbourn; a brother, I.V. Nobles of Kannapolis; and a granddaughter.

 

LILA B. HARDEE

WILMINGTON – Lila Boyd Hardee, 83, died Tuesday, April 11, 2006 at Britthaven of North Chase here. She was a native of Loris, S.C. and the daughter of the late James Graden and Beulah Fannie Graham Boyd.

A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, April 20 at Northside Baptist Church in Wilmington with the Rev. Kenneth Chinn officiating.

Survivors include two sons, Rev. W. Clinton Hardee Jr. of Delco and James Edgar Hardee of Wilmington; a daughter, Diane H. Potter of Arkansas; sisters, Jessie B. Webster of Lake City, S.C., Catherine B. Causey of Whiteville, Louise Boyd and Lucille Boyd, both of Loris, S.C.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

 

LUCILLE ELLIOTT

TABOR CITY – Lucille Elliott, 87, died Sunday, April 16, 2006 at Grand Strand Regional Hospital, Myrtle Beach, S.C. She was born May 26, 1918 in Robeson County. She was the widow of Dozier Elliott.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Peacock’s Chapel In The Pines of Whiteville.

Survivors include a son, Jerry Elliott of Tabor City; three grandchildren, Frankie Elliott of Tabor City, Jimmy Elliott of Sunset Beach, Joetta Elliott of Tabor City; a great-grandchild, Ashley Miller of Tabor City; two sisters, Virginia Anderson of Seattle, Wash., Sarah Elvington of Lake View, S.C.; a brother, J.T. Atkinson of Fairmont.

CLARENDON – Joseph Thomas died Saturday, April 15, 2006 at Loris Community Hospital.

RUBY R. SHEPARD

CLARKTON – Ruby Ransom Shepard, 81, formerly of Bolton, died Sunday, April 16, 2006 at Hospice Center in Wilmington. She was born July 7, 1924 in Columbus County the daughter of the late Coy and Amelia Hobbs Ransom.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Peacock’s Chapel In The Pines of Whiteville.

Survivors include a daughter, Dinah S. Elkins of Clarkton; a grandson, and two great-granddaughters, two half-brothers, one half-sister, and one step-brother.

 

BOBBY RAY BILBREY
Veteran

CLARKTON – Bobby Ray Bilbrey, died Friday, April 14, 2006 at Bladen County Hospital. He was born in Oklahoma.

He served in the United States Navy. and worked for Murphy Brown.

Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 18 at Bladen Funeral Home in Elizabethtown. Burial will follow in Addington, Okla. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Deborah Bilbrey; mother, Roberta Craig, grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Parker of Wawrika, Okla.; two daughters, Kelly R. Bilbrey and Robbie R. Endicott, both of Elizabethtown; a brother, Kevin Bilbrey of Duncan, Okla.

Visitation will be held Monday, April 17 from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

 

PEARLE G. LESTER

RED SPRINGS – Pearle Gore Lester, 79, died Thursday, April 13, 2006 at Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

Funeral services were held Saturday, April 15 at First Baptist Church in Red Springs. Burial followed in Alloway Cemetery in Red Springs. Floyd Mortuary of Lumberton handled the arrangements.

Survivors include three daughters, Deborah Martin of the home, Suzanne Sullivan of Leland, and Beth Kelsey of Aurora, Colo.; a son, Wade Lester; a brother, Wade Gore of Whiteville; a sister, Dean Smith of New Bern; and seven grandchildren.
