CHADBOURN Valma Soles Worthington, 93, died Wednesday, April 19, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare in Whiteville.
She was the daughter of the late Jesse Melvin and Callie Williams Soles. She was the widow of James “Jimmy” Ralph Worthington, co-founder of Worthington Funeral Home. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Bronice Catherine Worthington, a son, Melvin Devon Worthington, and a brother, Culbert Ralph Soles.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Chadbourn United Methodist Church with the Reverends Jim Hines and Richard Robinson officiating. Interment will follow in New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery in Whiteville. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.
She is survived by three sons, James Robert “Bobby” Worthington and his wife, Jannette of Whiteville, Ronald Bruce Worthington and his wife, Starr of Ocean Isle Beach, and Jesse Densil Worthington of Chadbourn.
Grandchildren, Randy Worthington and his wife, Betsy, Jeff Worthington and his wife, Michelle, Mickey Worthington and his wife, Michelle, Timothy Worthington, Steven Worthington and his wife, Tabatha, Matthew Worthington, Shawn Worthington, and Sara Worthington.

DELCO -- Esther Hobbs Bullock, 88, passed away on Good Friday, April 14, 2006 at her home surrounded by her family.
She was born in Columbus County on Jan. 26, 1918 and was the daughter of the late Lorenzo R. Hobbs and Blanch Hilbourn Hobbs. Remembered are her husband, James Wiley Bullock, Jr., sister, Maggie Hobbs Wilson, and brother-in-law John Ashley “Bossie” Bullock all who preceded her in death.
Mrs. Bullock was a member of Riegelwood Baptist Church for many years and had served as church organist, church clerk and taught the adult Sunday school class. She served as the Postmaster of Delco for 35 years, and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, United Daughters of the Confederacy, and the Order of Eastern Star.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Yvonne and Cleon Fowler and grandson, James C. Fowler all with whom she made her home; granddaughter, Merry Esther Futch and her husband Edgar D. Futch of Riegelwood; great-granddaugh-ter, Merry Lauren Futch. Two special nephews whom she helped raise, John Ashley Bullock Jr. and James Wiley Bullock II and his wife Beverly and their two children, Malinda Bullock and James Wiley Bullock III. Her sister, Gladys Williams and sister-in-law Ella Sue Bullock.
A celebration of life ceremony was held Monday April 17 at Riegelwood Baptist Church with Rev. Charles Hester officiating. Interment followed in Delco Cemetery. Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel in Wilmington handled the arrangements.

CHADBOURN Charles Linwood Garrell Sr., 71, died Monday, April 17, 2006 in Georgetown, S.C. He was born in Columbus County, the son of the late McKinley and Lena Evelyn Harrelson Garrell.
He had served in the National Guard.
Final rites will be held Thursday, April 20 at 3 p.m. in the Beaverdam Freewill Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Jackie Godwin, with interment at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Tabor City. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City is handling the arrangements.

She was a member of Bolton Baptist Church and formerly employed with the Columbus County Senior Aid Program.
Graveside services were held Wednesday, April 19 at Lake Waccamaw Hillcrest Cemetery by the Reverends Tex Floyd and Mike Burney. Peacocks Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

She was formerly employed for 26 years with Frances Neckware Mfg. Co. in Wilmington.
Final rites were held Tuesday, April 18 at Peacock’s Chapel In The Pines by the Rev. Markus Fowler. Interment followed in Peacock’s Columbus Memorial Park. Peacocks Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.
She is survived by a son, Jerry Elliott of Tabor City; three grandchildren and a great-grandchild; two sisters, Virginia Anderson of Seattle, Wash., and Sarah Elvington of Lake View, S.C.; a brother, J.T. Atkinson of Fairmont.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, William Herman Atkinson and Joseph Hubert Atkinson.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. Homer Daniel Horne, 68, died on Monday, April 17, 2006 at his residence. He was the son of the late Ed and Ava Horne. He was preceded in death by a brother, Ellis Horne.
Horne retired from Northrop Grumman Newport News, after 43 years of service, he was a graduate of The Newport News Shipbuilding Apprentice School. He served in the U.S. Army in Germany during the Berlin Crisis, and continued his service as a member of the Navy reserves. He was a member of Liberty Baptist Church, where he was an active member of the Heart Throbs Choir and the Liberty Builders.
Horne was a member of the following: Warwick Masonic Lodge 336, Mariner Masonic Lodge 215, and Order of Eastern Star Warwick Chapter 43. In 1999 he was DDGM for Masonic District 14B.
Final rites will be held at Peninsula Funeral Home in Newport News.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Helen Faye Horne; two sons, Bob Horne and David Horne; his siblings, RosaLee Watts, Elise Todd, Buck Horne, Pat Lancaster, and Kathy Davis, all of North Carolina.
