Vikes, Comets
advance to final

By DAN BISER

It’s one thing when Daniel Britt settles a game with his pitching arm alone. But often his bat can be just as effective.

Britt pitched his second straight one-hitter and knocked a three-run homer in the first inning Tuesday in the West Columbus Vikings’ 11-0 rout of the Whiteville Wolfpack in the semi-finals of the Jiggs Powers Memorial Baseball Tournament at Legion Stadium.

Viking outfielder J.D. White also had a big night at place as he drove in five runs with a pair of triples. Shortstop Ryan McCleney went 3-for-3.

The game was halted in the fifth inning by the 10-run rule.

Britt’s successive one-hitters have come on the heels of his 2-0 perfect-game victory over St. Pauls on April 4.

In Tuesday’s other second-round winner’s bracket game, North Stanly scored six runs in the fifth inning to boost the Comets to an 8-4 win over South Columbus. In the loser’s bracket game, West Bladen scored three runs in the seventh inning to overtake East Columbus 7-5.

Coach Ricky Young’s West Columbus squad met North Stanly in Wednesday night’s championship game. Whiteville and South Columbus squared off in the third-place battle, and West Bladen and Harrells Christian Academy met in the fifth-place game. See results in A-section.

West Columbus 11
Whiteville 0 (5 innings)

A third-inning infield single by Quan Gaddy was the only Whiteville hit off Britt and provided the only Wolfpack baserunner.

Britt put hit season pitching record at 6-1 with three of those wins coming in lop-sided victories over Whiteville. Britt, who has signed to play at Elon University, struck out eight of the 16 batters he faced

The Vikings jumped on Whiteville starter Robbie Penny quickly as Devon Brown and Ryan McCleney opened with singles. J.D. White followed with a two-run triple. After Zack Andrews drew a walk, Britt pounded his three -run homer into the WHS football bleachers to give the Vikings a 5-0 lead with no outs.

The Vikings added a run in the second inning when Devon Brown tripled and scored on a McCleney single.

In the third inning, the Vikings used three walks, a bunt single by McCleney and a bases-loaded triple by White to score five more runs.

Brett Godwin and Timothy Brown also had Viking hits.

Zach Spivey pitched in relief for Whiteville, which suffered its second straight loss.

Justin Crowell was the winning pitcher with Jamie Roberts pitching in relief.

South Columbus starting pitcher Garrett Bullock retired the first seven batters he faced before hitting two batters and thus helped bring in North Stanly’s first two runs.
