OBITUARIES
STENZA ROGERS COLLIER
Owner/Operator Collier's Jewelers

WHITEVILLE - Stenza Rogers Collier, 90, a co-owner and operator of Collier's Jewelers here and one of the finest soprano voices in Columbus County history, died Tuesday, April 25, 2006 in Columbus Regional Healthcare.

She was born in Columbus County, the daughter of the late Tate Moseley and Bessie Brown Rogers and was the widow of Lloyd Poe Collier, her partner in life and the jewelry business. She was active in the business for most of her years.

She attended Pineland School for Girls and Flora MacDonald College and studied voice.

Blessed with a beautiful coloratura soprano voice, she entertained at social events, in various churches and at area events for more than 60 years, and often teamed with her husband to present private and public performances. She and her husband were instrumental in founding and performing with the Whiteville Choral Club in the 1940s.

Collier was a member of the First Baptist Church here where she served as the choir director, sang in the choir and often performed as a soloist. She also performed with choirs in many other churches across the county. She taught Sunday school, plus worked as a den mother and leader for the Cub Scouts and was a member of the Whiteville Garden Club.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Roger Collier.

Final rites will be held at the First Baptist Church in Whiteville at 2 p.m. Friday, April 28 with the Rev. L. Kendell Cameron Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Columbus Memorial Park. McKenzie Mortuary of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include her son, Lloyd "Pebo" Collier and daughter-in-law, Nancy of Whiteville; a sister, Norma R. Cook of Newport News, Va.; sister-in-law, Dell Rogers Dorgan and husband, Dexter of Chapel Hill; a granddaughter, Jane Wishon of Boone; a grandson, Scott Morgan; three great-grandchildren; and special nephews and nieces.

Visitation will be held Thursday, April 27 from 7-8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Music Department, 412 N. Madison St., Whiteville, N.C. 28472.

TABOR CITY - Willie Myers Jr. died Tuesday, April 25, 2006 at Loris Healthcare System in Loris, S.C.

REV. MURDOCK LEON SMITH JR.
Retired minister, and owner and operated Smith's Vinyl Siding and Construction Co.

HALLSBORO - Rev. Murdock Leon Smith Jr., 62, died Monday, April 24, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare. He was born Dec. 19, 1943 in New Hanover County, the son of the late Murdock Leon Smith Sr. and Hazel Thompson Smith.

Smith was a retired minister from Council Pentecostal Church and a member of Whiteville Church of God. He owned and operated Smith's Vinyl Siding and Construction Company.

Final rites were held Thursday, April 27 at Whiteville Church of God by the Reverends Milton Martin and Allen Strickland. Interment followed in Lake Waccamaw Hillcrest Cemetery. Peacocks Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

He is survived by his wife, Vivian Hardee Smith; a daughter, Lisa Thomas of Hallsboro; a brother, Larry Smith of Whiteville; three sisters, Barbara Worley of Abbottsburg, Brenda Norton of Whiteville, and Martha Thompson of Whiteville; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

 

PEARL E. SUGGS
Retired state employee

OLD DOCK - Pearl Elizabeth Suggs, 87, died Monday, April 24, 2006. She was born Aug. 18, 1918 in Cobbtown, Ga., the daughter of the late Rev. Aldy and Essie Vallie Miller Love. She was the widow of Carl Suggs.

Pearl was a retired state employee and an active member of Palmyra Baptist Church.

Graveside services were conducted Wednesday, April 26 at Palmyra Baptist Church Cemetery by the Rev. Ralph Gore. Peacocks Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.

She is survived by a daughter, Lois Nye; a son, Rev. Daniel Rudolph Suggs; four grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

 

ANN DAVIS HAMMOND

BLADENBORO - Ann Davis Hammond, 66, died Sunday, April 23, 2006 at Sunbridge Nursing Center in Elizabethtown. She was the daughter of the late D.B. and Ottie Bell Davis. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Suzanne Hammond, and a brother, Huey Davis.

Final rites were held Wednesday, April 26 at Grace Baptist Church with the Rev. Greg Packer officiating. Burial followed in the Lewis Cemetery. Lewis Funeral Home of Bladenboro handled the arrangements.

Survivors include a son, Rocky Hammond of Clarkton; a daughter, Regina Agbayani; two step-daughters, Brenda Perry and Darlene Weathers, both of Cannon, S.C.; a brother, David Davis of Portland, Ore.; a sister, Janice Babson of Evergreen; nine grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

 

JESSIE G. GOODEN

CLARKTON - Jessie G. Gooden, 80, died Tuesday, April 25, 2006 at Sunbridge Nursing Facility in Elizabethtown. She was the widow of Warren (W.O.) Gooden.

Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, April 27 at Clarkton Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Stuart Link officiating. Burial will follow in Clarkton Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include a son, Richard Wayne Gooden of Dublin, two daughters, Jane Minard of Clarkton, and Kathryn Gooden Cates of Greensboro; a half-brother, Warren Gooden of Charlotte; five grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

WILLIAM S. HARDEE

TABOR CITY - William Sampson "W.S." Hardee, 74, died Tuesday, April 25, 2006 at his residence. He was born in Horry County, S.C., the son of Oda Mae Fowler Hardee and the late John Jesse Hardee.

Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 28 at the Inman Chapel conducted by Dr. David Coleman. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Tabor City. Inman Funeral Home Inc. of Tabor City is handling the arrangements.

He is survived by two sons, Tony Hardee of Raleigh, and William R. Hardee of Tabor City; a daughter, Beverly Clark of Laurinburg; his mother, Oda F. Hardee of Tabor City; eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be Thursday from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

 

LOIS ODUM DAMERON

TABOR CITY - Lois Odum Dameron, 82, died Monday, April 24, 2006 in Duke Hospital in Durham. She was born in Wake County, the daughter of the late Owen and Anna Kelly Odum. She was a graduate of Wake Forest University.

Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, April 27 at Tabor City Baptist Church, conducted by Dr. David Coleman and the Rev. Dan Deaton, with interment in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Tabor City. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City is handling the arrangements.

She is survived by her husband, H.G. "Doc" Dameron of the home; two sons, Richard Dameron and David Dameron, both of Tabor City; a daughter, Phyllis Gore of Oxford; a brother, Dwight Odum of Norfolk, Va.; a sister, Frances Langdon of Coats; eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

BARBARA JEAN P. WARD

WHITEVILLE - Barbara Jean P. Ward, 65, died Monday, April 24, 2006 at the Sunbridge Care & Rehab Facility in Elizabethtown. She was born in Bufffalo, N.Y. the daughter of Rose Guffanti Paolini and the late Emilio Paolini Sr. She was preceded in death by a brother, Emilio Paolini Jr.

Ward was a member of the Old Dock United Methodist Church. She was employed with Hills Grocery and worked with Hickory Hill Day Care.

Final rites were held Wednesday, April 26 at Old Dock United Methodist Church with the Rev. Carroll Fitzgerald officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. McKen-zie Mortuary handled the arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, Sterling Ward of Whiteville; a daughter, Cathy Ward Simmons and husband Lynn of Beaverdam; two sons, Robert Ward and wife Melinda, and David M. Ward and wife, Kay, both of Whiteville; her mother, Rose Guffanti Paolini of Deltona, Fla.; a aunt, Leda Guffanti of Deltona, Fla.; grandchildren, Robert Ward Jr., Justin Ward, Christina Ward, Amber Simmons, and Mark Strickland.

JOHNNIE B. HODGE
Veteran

GREEN SEA, S.C. - Johnnie B. Hodge, 78, died Sunday, April 23, 2006 at the VA Hospital in Charleston, S.C. He was born in Horry County, the son of the late William Johnnie and Luttie Soles Hodge. He was a veteran of the United States Army.

Final rites were held Wednesday, April 26 at the Inman Chapel conducted by the Reverends Perry Malphrus and Tim Nugent. Burial followed in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Tabor City. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.

He is survived by his wife, Ethel Lee Hodge of the home; two sons, Kenneth Hodge of Green Sea, S.C., and Doug Hodge of Tabor City; a brother, Horace Hodge of Longs, S.C.; a sister, Ivey Dean Sheppard of Columbia, S.C.; four grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

 

GLADYS HAMMOND BLACKWELL

WINSTON-SALEM - Gladys Hammond Blackwell, 79, died Tuesday, April 25, 2006 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born May 1, 1926 in Columbus County, the daughter of the late Joseph Jackson and Esther Jenkins Hammond. She was preceded in death by her husband, W.T. Blackwell; sisters, Vennie Hinson of Fair Bluff and Mollie Whitehead of Cerro Gordo; brothers, Fred Hammond and Gordon Hammond, both of Fair Bluff.

Blackwell was a member of Waughtown Baptist Church. She had worked in retail at Kings Department Store and at Zayre's Department Store. She was a C.N.A. for more than 30 years and had worked for Piedmont Home Health of Winston-Salem.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 29 at the Memorial Chapel of Waughtown Baptist Church with the Rev. Joe McWethy officiating. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home of Winston-Salem is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include her sons, W. Richard Blackwell and wife, Pat, Phil Blackwell and wife Tammie, and Terry Blackwell and wife Debbie, all of Winston-Salem; six grand-children, Chad Blackwell of Little Rock, Ark., Drew Blackwell of Atlanta, Ga., Star Blackwell Welch of Mocksville, Shane Blackwell, Corey Blackwell and Sara Blackwell, all of Winston-Salem; a great-grandson, Austin Welch of Mocksville; and a brother, Owen Hammond of Fair Bluff.

Flowers are welcome or memorials may be sent to Waughtown Baptist Church, 1538 Waughtown Street, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27107.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday, April 28 at the funeral home located at 3315 Silas Creek Parkway.

 

DAISY SKIPPER

WHITEVILLE - Daisy Skipper, 88, died Wednesday, April 26, 2006. She was born Aug. 21, 1917, the daughter of the late Major and Velma Pierce Ward. She was the widow of Lloyd Glenn Skipper.

Skipper was a member of Cornerstone Freewill Baptist Church. She was formerly employed with Lock Manufacturing Company in Wilmington.

Final rites are incomplete and will be announced by Peacock's Chapel In The Pines of Whiteville.

She is survived by three sons: Garland "Bill" Skipper, Douglas Skipper, and Elmer Jay Skipper, all of Whiteville; a brother, Charlie Ward of Hallsboro; four sisters, Carrie Sellers Beasley of Hallsboro, Ruby Canady of Whiteville, Rachel Reynolds of Wilmington, and Lela Mae Porter of Shallotte; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Marie Boyce and two brothers, Grady Ward and Major Paul Ward.

CHADBOURN - Martha Wilson, 46, died Wednesday, April 26, 2006 at her residence.

Arrangements will be announced by Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville.

 

DOROTHY MAE JONES
Dietician

WHITEVILLE - Dorothy Mae Jones, 78, died Wednesday, April 26, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare. She was the daughter of the late Jesse Jones Sr. and Elsie Donley.

Jones was a dietician at the Columbus County Hospital for more than 10 years. She was a member of White Marsh Baptist Church and a member of R.S.V.P. (Joy Messengers singing group).

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. at White Marsh Baptist Church with the Reverends Carroll Fonvielle and Richard Priest officiating. McKenzie Mortuary of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include four daughters, Kathy Todd of Lake Waccamaw, Ruby Shipman, JoAnn Bailey, and Jackie Bailey, all of Whiteville; three sons, John Paite, Jimmy Bailey, and Sammy Bailey, all of Whiteville; two sisters, Edna Nichols of Kirtland, Ohio, and Mary Brozik of Morgantown, W. Va.; a brother, Jesse Jones Jr. of Willowick, Ohio; 10 grandchildren, and a great-grandchild.

Visitation will be Friday, April 29 at the funeral home from 7-9 p.m.
