Wolfpack gets
past Pender 6-2

BURGAW - The Whiteville Wolfpack found itself in an all-out struggle with last-place Pender for six innings Tuesday before pulling out a 6-2 Waccamaw Conference baseball victory over the host Patriots.

The win halted a three-game WHS losing streak that included back-to-back shutout losses to West Columbus and South Columbus in last week’s Jiggs Powers Memorial Tournament. Whiteville holds a 7-1 Waccamaw Conference record and an 11-8 season mark. Pender fell to 0-8 in conference play.

Whiteville led 3-2 after six innings before putting up three runs in the seventh.

Cameron White had three hits while Robbie Penny and Sprandon Mahoney had two hits each for the Wolfpack. Penny drove a run-scoring double and Alex Hooks delivered a key two-run single in the seventh inning. Ben Deans added a sacrifice fly.

Starting pitcher Trey Nye pitched the first three innings but was unable to return to the mound due to a back ailment. Zack Spivey pitched the fourth and fifth innings and Penny pitched the sixth and seventh. Penny struck out six of the seven batters he faced.

Coach Brett Harwood’s WHS squad will travel to play South Columbus Friday. Gametime is 7 p.m.

Whiteville 001 200 3 - 6 8 1
