WHITEVILLE James Bartley Reaves Jr., 85, died Saturday, April 1, 2006 at his residence following a lengthy illness. He was a son of the late James Bradley and Kate Gore Reaves.
He was owner and operator of Reaves Amusements in Whiteville, until his health began to decline at which time he turned the business over to his son.
Private memorial services will be held Saturday, April 8 at the funeral home. Brunswick Funeral Service of Shallotte is handling the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Macon Reaves of the home, a son, James Bartley Reaves III and wife Maria of Whiteville; a daughter, Terri Reaves and husband James Brock of Ft. Myers, Fla., a sister, Ruth R. Johnson of Whiteville, and two grandchildren, James Bradley Reaves IV and Kennedy Gray Reaves.
The family request that no flowers be sent but that donations in Reaves name be made to The Lower Cape Fear Hospice Center, P.O. Box 636, Whiteville, N.C. 28472.
SHEILA HARVEY RULE

WHITEVILLE Sheila Harvey Rule, 77, died Saturday, April 1, 2006 at her residence.
She was the daughter of the late John Beall and Alice Victoria Berstrom Harvey and was a veteran serving in the United States Air Force.
Final rites will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, April 3 at Trinity Baptist Church in Whiteville with the Rev. Stephen Bailey officiating. Interment will follow in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington Va. at a later date. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include a daughter, Paula Leigh Rule Chenier of Whiteville; and two grandsons.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Trinity Baptist Church Homebound Mission, 201 South Thompson Street, Whiteville, N.C. 28472 or to The Columbus Regional Healthcare System Foundation, 500 Jefferson Street, Whiteville, N.C. 28472.

BOLTON Ellen Hurst Jacob, 53, died Friday, March 31, 2006 in New Hanover Hospital, Wilmington after a long illness. She was born on July 22, 1952 in Sanford, Maine, daughter of Lorene Aspinall Hurst and the late Hartley Chester Hurst.
She graduated from Masconomet High School in 1971. She was a member of Mt. Sinai Holiness Church in Bolton, where she taught Sunday school and vacation Bible school.
During her lifetime she worked as a seamstress, waitress, and was a volunteer Emergency Medical Technician.
Final rites were held Monday, April 3rd at Mt. Sinai Holiness Church. Worthington Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Survivors include her husband of 26 years, Carnell Jacobs; her mother, Lorene Hurst of Wilmington; sisters, Judith Shain Sr. of Acton, Maine, Kathleen Fox of Hendersonville, Tenn.; a brother, Harry Hurst of Harrisonburg, Va. She was pre-deceased by her father, Hartley Hurst.

CHADBOURN Thomas Jefferson Fowler, 74, died Thursday, March 30, 2006 at Shoreland Health Care and Rehabilitation in Whiteville.
Fowler was a retired long shoreman at Sunny Point in Southport and was also a retired farmer.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen Mincey Fowler; parents, Dr. Talmadge and Vernie Mercer Fowler; a brother, O’Neal Fowler, and a sister, Ila Mae Dowless.
Final rites were held Sunday, April 2, 2006 at Worthington Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. William Jackie Godwin officiating. Interment followed in the Mercer Cemetery, Chadbourn. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn handled the arrangements.
Survivors include a son, Anthony Fowler of Fair Bluff; daughters, Tammy Williams of Salemburg, Laurita Moore, Wanda Rozier and Melissa Garrell, all of Chadbourn; a step-son, Larry Mincey of Chadbourn; step-daughters, Doris Patterson and Deborah M. Graham; sisters, Theonia Saunders of Chadbourn and Mona Faye Cox of Clemmons; brothers, Woodrow Fowler of Mt. Holly and Jerry Fowler of Chadbourn; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his mother, Ruby Lee Stewart Ross of Lumberton; his father and step-mother, Beamon and Kathleen P. Strickland of Clarkton; brothers, Guy Strickland of Leland and Jerry Strickland of Missouri; a sister, Grace Smith of Hope Mills; a half-brother, Eddie B. Strickland of Wilmington; two half-sisters, Martha King of Wilmington and Alice Osbourne of Fayetteville.

RALEIGH John Edwin Small, 78, passed away Friday, March 31, 2006 after several months of declining health. He was born in Fair Bluff the youngest of nine children.
Small was the son of the late Lillian Davis and Maxie D. Small. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Othella Hinson, and Juanita Hammond; and five brothers, Woodrow, Jeff, Leon, Lonnie, and James.
Small graduated from Fair Bluff High School and served in the United States Army. He was a graduate of Louisburg College, earning an Associate Degree of Arts in accounting. He was employed by The Capitol Coca-Cola Bottling Company for more than 30 years, retiring as vice-president-treasurer. Small then worked for Infostor serving as general manager, retiring in 1992.
Small was very active in civic affairs serving on the board of directors of the Raleigh Central YMCA. He was a member of the Raleigh Host Lions Club for 40 years. He was vice-president, Lion Tamer, Tail Twister, board of directors, various committee chairs, named Lion of the Year in 1997, Melvin Jones Fellow, and Jack Stickley Fellow. He was a very active member of the Crabtree Valley Baptist Church for 35 years and served as president of the Men’s Bible Class for more than 10 years.
Small loved sports. Some of his favorites were baseball, basketball, fishing and golf. He had a great love for the coast.
Final rites were held Monday, April 3 at Crabtree Valley Baptist Church, with interment following at Raleigh Memorial Park. Mitchell Funeral Home at Raleigh Memorial Park handled the arrangements.
He is survived by his loving wife, Grace Floyd Small, having shared 56 years of marriage; a son, Gregory Edwin Small of the home; a granddaughter, Emily G. Small, who was his pride and joy; a brother, Willard and sister-in-law Ruth Small of Fair Bluff; and was blessed by many nieces and nephews.

CLARKTON Carolyn Patricia “Pat” Swanson, 59, died Friday, March 31, 2006 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice Care Center in Wilmington. She was a librarian at Clarkton library.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 3 at Bladen Funeral Home in Elizabethtown. Burial will follow in Clarkton City Cemetery. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown is handling the arrangements.

ASHEVILLE Ronald Curtis Powell, 46, died Monday, March 27, 2006 at Mission Hospital here. He was born in Columbus County was the son of Margaret Walters Massengill and the grandson of the late Dallie and Zelma Walters.
Powell moved to Asheville to attend college at Mars Hill to study music. Prior to his move he was a member of Union Valley Baptist Church and played the piano for a brief time.
A private family service was held in Asheville. Asheville Mortuary Service handled the arrangements.
Survivors include other than his mother; a sister, Ellen Massengill of Chadbourn; two nieces, Natalie Ward of Chadbourn, and Mandy Rawls of Whiteville.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or a charity of ones choice.

GRANBURY, Texas Lacy Carlton “Frank” Stanley Jr. died Wednesday, March 29, 2006.
He was born Sept. 16, 1928 the son of the late Lacy Carlton
Stanley and Rose Lee Cox Stanley in Horry County, S.C. He was preceded in death by a sister, Doc Gore, and a brother, Carlton Stanley.
He served in the U.S. Army 21 years, 1946-1967, retiring as a staff sergeant. He was an electrician and retired from Brown and Root in 1990.
Graveside services with military rites were held Saturday, April 1 at Action Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Naydean Stanley of Granbury, Texas; two sons, Earl Stanley of Salado, Texas, and Trig Stanley of Granbury, Texas, three daughters, Joana Herring of Salado, Texas, and Debbie Terry of Belton, Texas; Katrina Stanley of Granbury; a brother, Bobby Stanley of Lake Waccamaw; two sisters, Connie Duncan of Pireway, and Nancy Thompson of Whiteville; 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
BLADENBORO Sarah Frances Britt, 89, died Thursday, March 30, 2006 at Duke University Hospital in Durham.
Final rites were held Sunday, April 2 at First Baptist Church in Bladenboro with the Rev. Bert Young and Dr. Mack Roberts officiating. Burial followed in Hickory Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Bladenboro. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown handled the arrangements.

RUDOLPH ‘RUDY’ STRICKLAND

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. Rudolph “Rudy” Strickland, 70, formerly of the Cherry Grove community and a resident of Peninsula for 50 years, died Wednesday, March 29, 2006.
Strickland as a boiler maker with Local 45 and had worked most of his career at the Yorktown Refinery.
He was a member of Liberty Baptist Church. His wood working skills enabled him to derive great joy from being able to build anything for other people.
Final rites were held Saturday, April 1 at Peninsula Funeral Home. Burial followed in Parklawn Memorial Park. Peninsula Funeral Home of Newport News, Va. handled the arrangements.
Preceded in death by his former wife Patty, he is survived by a daughter, Sheree L. Lane and her husband, Stanley of Newport News, Va.; a son, Durand Strickland and his wife, Lori of Poquoson, Va.; a sister, Nellie Mae Richardson; three brothers, Danny Strickland, Elmore Strickland, and F.B. Strickland; five grandchildren, Andres Williams, Kimberly Williams, Taylor Strickland, Tanner Strickland, and Madson Strickland, and one great-grandson, Xavier Williams.
Rudy loved his grandkids and great-grandkids more than anything. He was the most generous person anyone had ever known. He will be so missed.
