A clear evening sky and a whole lot of memories helped make the Nakina Dixie Youth League’s 2006 opening ceremonies a special event Friday night at the Nakina DY Field. The league observed its 30th anniversary, recognizing this year’s teams, players, coaches, umpires, league officials and others, as well as those from the past. Players ranging in ages from 3 to 12, representing four levels of play, lined the field during the introductions. Another highlight was the ceremonial first pitch by 10-year-old Dustin Ezzell (top photo, above). Ezzell is back to compete in the Nakina DY League after undergoing a liver transplant since the end of last season. League play got underway Saturday with all teams stepping into action.
