WCHS shuts out St. Pauls
Britt pitches perfect game

ST. PAULS – Twenty-one up, twenty-one down.

Perfection rode the right arm of West Columbus High senior Daniel Britt Tuesday night as the Vikings took a 2-0 win over the host St. Pauls Bulldogs in a battle of first-place teams in the Southeastern 1A-2A Conference baseball race.

Not a single Bulldog runner reached base as Britt recorded 11 strikeouts. It marked the first perfect game in WCHS baseball history and is believed to be the first by a Columbus County player.

“It was about as flawless an outing as you can get,” said Viking coach Ricky Young, who is a former pitcher at Methodist College. “He was coming up big on all three of his pitches (fastball, curve, slider). He ran the count to three balls only once.

“The fact that it came in such an important game really makes it big,” said Young. “St. Pauls has a very solid team.”

The 6-foot-4, 180-pound Britt, who has signed to pitch at Elon University, helped his own cause with a home run in the fourth inning. The Vikings got their other run on a solo home run by senior outfielder John David White in the sixth inning. The Vikings finished with seven hits off St. Pauls pitcher Trey Lowrey.

The win put the Vikings at 12-1 for the season and 5-0 in conference play. St. Pauls, which came in with an 11-game winning streak, fell to 11-2 and 4-1.

West Columbus will play Friday at West Bladen.
