Wolfpack defeatsWarriors

Strong pitching was the order of the evening Tuesday night at Legion Stadium as the Whiteville Wolfpack posted a 5-0 non-conference baseball victory over Waccamaw Academy.

Whiteville got all its runs with the help of Waccamaw Academy fielding miscues as it took its sixth straight win. Both teams were limited to three hits.

Freshman Sprandon Mahoney was the winning pitcher, getting relief help from Robbie Penny in the sixth inning. Waccamaw Academy’s Ben Rouse was tagged with the loss. Dustin Williamson came on to pitch in the fifth.

“This was a well-pitched game for both sides,” said Whiteville coach Brett Harwood. “There wasn’t much in the way of hitting tonight.”

Waccamaw Academy committed six errors, all of which were crucial to the Wolfpack’s run production.

“We just didn’t make the plays,” said Warrior coach Robbie Allen. “It’s been one of our shortcomings this year. I though our pitching held up well but we just gave away too much.”

Mahoney and Robbie Penny each had one hit and each scored two runs for the Wolfpack. Scott Stephens had the other WHS hit.

Williamson led Warrior hitters with a first-inning double and sixth-inning single. Grayson Graham had the other Waccamaw hit. Williamson struck out five of the eight batters he faced.

Mahoney retired 15 of the first 17 Warrior batters he faced before giving up his to Graham and Williamson in the sixth. Penny came on to finish the game in relief.

Whiteville’s season record at stands at 8-5 while Waccamaw Academy is 10-7.

Whiteville will resume its Waccamaw 1A-2A Conference schedule Friday when it travels to meet North Brunswick at 7.
