OBITUARIES
SHERRY E. NANNEY

GOOSE CREEK, S.C. – Sherry Faye Edmund Nanney, 55, formerly of Cerro Gordo died Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2006 at her residence. She was the daughter of the late Steve and Pauline Miller Edmund.

Nanney was a professional caregiver of both adults and children and a graduate of Appalachian State University.

Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 19 at Porter Swamp Baptist Church with the Rev. Tim Moore officiating. Interment will follow in Powell Cemetery in Fair Bluff. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.

She is survived by a brother, Bruce Edmund of Charleston, S.C.

Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

ODESSA W. PUCKETT

TABOR CITY – Odessa Watts Puckett, 81, died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2006. She was the daughter of the late Lester Watts and Delia Soles Watts and the widow of James Puckett. She was predeceased by two children, Lynn Puckett and Terry Whitehead.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 17 at the Inman Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. David Coleman officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City is handling the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Tabor City Rescue Squad, 609 East 5th St., Tabor City, N.C. 28463.

GEORGE L. FREEMAN

DELCO – George Leonzer Freeman, 64, died Friday, Aug. 11, 2006 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. He was a mechanic and served in the United States Army.

Final rites were held Wednesday, Aug. 16 at Evergreen AME Zion

Church by Elder Shawn Maynor. Burial followed in the Mitchell Field Cemetery in Clarkton. Peoples Funeral Home in Whiteville handled the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Rev. Shirley A. Freeman; a daughter, Arnecia Renee Nichol of Fayetteville; two sons, George L. Freeman Jr. of Fayetteville and Cameron Ray Freeman of Delco; two sisters, Mary E. Simpson of Northwest and Olivia P. McGuire of Raleigh.

ANNIE MAE FAIRLEY

TABOR CITY – Annie Mae Fairley, 81, died Friday, Aug. 11, 2006 at her residence. She was a homemaker.

Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 17 at Hickory Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Fair Bluff by the Rev. Thomas Nelson. Burial will follow in the Hickory Grove Cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth Edge of Charlotte and Mary Fairley of the home; two sons, Clarence Fairley and Bobby Fairley of Cerro Gordo; a sister, Lillian McQueen of Laurinburg.

Viewing will be held at the church Thursday following the service.

TABOR CITY – Chris Dixon died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2006.

Final rites are incomplete and will be announced later by Westside Funeral Home of Tabor City.

 

ZAHIR A. SWINDELL

CLARKTON – Zahir Ahmad Swindell, 10-month-old son of Harold and Sherica Swindell died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare.

Arrangements will be announced by Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville.

 

JOE PITTS

WHITEVILLE – Walter Joe Pitts, 80, died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare. He was born Aug. 19, 1925 in Bridgeport, Texas the son of the late John Duke and Caroline Budil Pitts.

Pitts graduated from Jacksboro High School in 1942 and the

University of North Texas with a bachelor’s and master’s degree. His postgraduate work was at the University of Texas.

He was a retired superintendent for the Texas public school system, and the director of education and training at the largest Job Corps in the nation.

Pitts served his country during World War II as a member of the 3rd Marine Battalion in the battles of Iwo Jima and Guam. He was a 32nd Degree Master Mason. He spent his life helping others.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 17 at Grace Episcopal Church by the Rev. Anne Natoli. Interment will follow in Fentress Community Cemetery in Fentress, Texas.

He is survived by two daughters, Dr. Kathleen Matlock of Whiteville and Molly Hilton and husband, Dr. James Hilton of Charlottesville, Va.; four grandchildren, Heather Springs Gash and Shannon Springs, both of Whiteville, Michael Hilton and Meghan Hilton, both of Charlottesville, Va.; a great-grandchild, Katelyn Gash.

Serving as pallbearers will be Larry Bass, David Flowers, James Fowler, Michael Hilton, Rick Maxwell, and Alvin Phillips. Honorary pallbearers will be Hector McNeill and James Counts.

Memorials maybe made to Southeastern Community College Foundation, c/o the Joe and Betty Pitts Memorial, P.O. Box 151, Whiteville, N.C. 28472.

KEITH PRINCE

GREEN SEA, S.C. – Keith Prince, 76, died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2006 in his home following a long illness.

Final rites will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 18 at Tabor City Baptist Church with burial following in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include three daughters, Linda Nantz of Mooresville, Sherri Watts of Fayetteville, and Julia Prince of Tabor City; a son, Mion Keith Prince of Tabor City; two sisters, Darcus Grainger and Hilda Williamson, both of Tabor City; a brother, Rev. William “Billy” Prince of Tabor City; and nine grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Tabor City Baptist Church on Live Oak Street, Tabor City.

Visitation will be Thursday, Aug. 17 from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

 

FATHER TIMOTHY JOSEPH REILLY

CAROLINA BEACH --At long last, Tim Reilly rejoined his wife Linda in the glory of God’s grace. Tim Reilly, a local priest and banker passed away Sunday enjoying the beauty of God’s creation at Carolina Beach. He was 60 years old. He was a local banker for many years and recently realized his vocation to the Priesthood in the Catholic Apostolic Church of North America.

Reilly formerly worked with Waccamaw Bank of Whiteville and was a former member of the Whiteville Rotary Club. He also helped with the Rotary and Fire Ant Festival runs.

He is survived by his beloved children and grandchildren: Angela Caroline Reilly, Kristin and Sam Newberry, Courtney Reilly and Joe Hammett, Zachary Reilly, Joshua and Crystal Reilly, Bethany and Rebekah Reilly; and grandchildren, Sam Newberry IV and Isabella Reilly, were the special lights in his life.

Reilly is also joining his mother, Clorinda and his father, Ned and his brothers and sisters, Edward, Gerald, Denis, Terrance and “Baby Sister.” Survivors include his brothers and sisters, Augusta Reilly, RSM of Baltimore; Clorinda and Louis Dudoussatt of Metarie, La.; Woody and Norma Reilly of Cartersville, Ga.; Mary Ellen Reilly, Margaret Antoinette and Ashton Brock of Mobile, Ala., Michael and Julie Reilly of Roswell, Ga.; Dan and Kay Reilly of Chantilly, Va.; Mary and Richard Marcet of Alpharetta, Ga.

Timbo is also the beloved Uncle of 52 nephews and nieces. He will also be greatly missed by his wife Linda’s family, The Hoffman’s of North Carolina.

A sunrise service was held Thursday, Aug. 17 on Carolina Beach at #5 Texas Ave. and then family and friends proceeded to Kure Memorial Lutheran Church for a memorial service. Andrews Mortuary of Wilmington handled the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers the family requests charitable donations to St. Joseph’s Sanctuary, P.O. Box 569, Kure Beach, N.C. 28449-0569. The donations will be allocated to Tim’s favorite charities including The Steve Haydu “St. Patrick’s” Day Lo Tide Run, The Family First Shelter for battered women, and The Catholic Apostolic Church of North America.

MARVIN N. TAYLOR

LUMBERTON – Marvin Nash Taylor, 77, formerly of Leland, died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2006 at Southeastern Regional Medical Center. He was the son of the late Sandy Jerome and Alma Powers Taylor, and the husband of the late Ethel Page Taylor.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 18 at Chadbourn Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Clinton Hardee officiating. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.

He is survived by three daughters, Audrey Waters of Lumberton, Debbie Weeks of Aiken, S.C., and Wanda Carter of Leland; four sons, James Taylor of Barnesville, Jerry Taylor of Shallotte, Charles Taylor of Harrells, and Keith Taylor of Kelly; two sisters, Betty Shepherd of Evergreen, and Agnes Valentine of Bladenboro; 19 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Thursday (today) at the funeral home.

 

LARRY M. WHITE

WHITEVILLE – Larry Mitchell White, 69, of the New Hope community died Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2006. He was born Sept. 21, 1936 in Columbus County, the son of the late Vasper Gaston and Myrtle Harrelson White. He was formerly employed with the Blue Flash service station.

Final rites were conducted Thursday, Aug. 17 at the graveside at New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery by the Rev. Roy Walker. Peacock Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn Richardson Skipper.

 

DAVID V. WARD

WHITEVILLE – David Vernon Ward, 69, died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2006 at his residence. He was the son of the late Jackson Ward and Ida Jackson Ward.

Ward owned and operated his own cabinet shop in the New Hope community for many years.

Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 18 at McKenzie Mortuary Chapel with Dr. Tommy Bryson officiating. McKenzie Mortuary of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include two sons, Darrell Ward of Calabash, and Harold Ward of York, S.C.; two daughters, Melissa W. Raybon of York, S.C., and Teresa W. Edwards of Summerville, S.C.; two brothers, Benjamin Ward and Roger Ward, both of Fayetteville; and a half-brother, Robert Ward of Fayetteville; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be at the funeral home Friday from noon until 12:45 p.m. prior to the service.

The family will receive friends at the home of Myrtle Jones on Thursday (tonight) from 6-8 p.m. at 31 Hull St., Whiteville.

 

LENOX PROCTOR

LAKE WACCAMAW – Arthur Lennox “Rod” Proctor, 77, died peacefully in his home Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2006 after a valiant battle with cancer.  He was born Oct. 7, 1928 in Columbus County, the son of the late James Everette and Leatha Cartrette Proctor. He was the widower of the late Linda Peacock Proctor.

Lenox formerly owned and operated Powell Auto Parts in Whiteville. He was a long time member of Trinity Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and trustee. He spent his retirement years as a very active organizer and worker for volunteer programs in Columbus County and southeastern North Carolina. In particular, he was instrumental in the Ramps & Rails Program, a group of retired volunteers who build ramps for aging and handicapped individuals.

His love for children led him to be the assistant director in the nursery and board member of the daycare center at his church as well as work with children in the White Marsh Wildlife Action Summer Camp. Study and world travel with Southeastern Community College were among his many interests.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 19 at Trinity Baptist Church by the Rev. Charles Bullock. Interment will follow in the Peacock’s Columbus Memorial Park. Peacock Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

He is survived by his daughter, Wanda Proctor Hoover and husband, Rick of Maitland, Fla.; two grandchildren, Hilary (Sam) Waers of Tallahassee, Fla. and Coleman Hoover of Athens, Ga.; four sisters, Kathleen Hobbs of Lake Waccamaw, Lillian (Avery) Soles, Margaret Soles and Doris (Walter) Batten, all of Whiteville; numerous nephews and nieces including Sylvia (Charles) Patton; and his faithful companion, Brenda Jarman of Whiteville.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 18 at Peacock’s Chapel In The Pines.
