CLARKTON Zahir Ahmad Swindell, 10-month-old son of Harold and Sherica Swindell died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare.
Final rites were held Saturday, Aug. 19 at El-Bethel Church in Whiteville by Bishop E. Floyd Jr. Burial followed in the Cherry Grove Cemetery in Whiteville. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are a sister, Zhare Brooks of Morrisville, Pa.; a brother, Messiah Swindell of Clarkton; paternal grandparents, Russell and Diana Hill of Ewing, N.J.; and maternal grandparents, Vincent and Annie Archer of Atlantic Beach, S.C.
CHADBOURN Maxine Manning, formerly of Tabor City, passed away Thursday, Aug. 17, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22 at Mitchell Sea Baptist Church in Green Sea, S.C. The Rev. Vanzie Vereen will officiate with burial to follow in the Columbus County Singing Union Cemetery in Tabor City. Westside Funeral Home of Tabor City is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include her daughter, Mamie M. Bradley, one grandson, three great-grandsons, and three sisters.
Visitation will be Monday, Aug. 21 from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. The family will receive friends at the home of Maxine Manning, Wellonton Apartment 11-4 in Chadbourn.
TABOR CITY Chris Dixon, 33, died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2006 at Loris Community Hospital.
Final rites were held Friday, Aug. 18 at To God Be The Glory Ministries in Tabor City with Apostle Viola Davis officiating. Interment followed in Bristol Creek Cemetery in the Dothan community. Westside Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.
Survivors include his mother, Sadie Mae Dixon; a brother, Carlton Hill, and grandmother, Clara Dixon.
LT. COLONEL GEORGE BOYETTE JR.
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Lt. Colonel George Otis Boyette Jr., 76, of Stafford County, died Thursday, Aug. 17, 2006 at Mary Washington Hospital.
Lt. Col. Boyette was born in Chadbourn on July 13, 1930. He completed Chadbourn High School and enlisted in the United States Army during February 1949. He served as an enlisted man from1949 through April 16, 1954. Upon completion of Officer Candidate School (OCS), Lt. Col. Boyette was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. During 16 1/2 years of commissioned service, he served as an Army Finance Officer/Comptroller with numerous worldwide assignments until his retirement in October 1970.
In addition to the Master Parachutist Badge, Lt. Col. Boyette was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Reserve Officers Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the U.S. Army Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Bronze Star Medal, and the Legion of Merit Medal as well as several other certificates of commendation and appreciation during his period of military service.
After retirement, Lt. Col. Boyette returned to North Carolina and continued work towards a degree. On Sept. 4, 1973, Lt. Col. Boyette was employed as executive secretary to the board of directors, Army and Air Force Civilian Welfare Fund, the Pentagon, Washington, D.C. He received a bachelor of science degree in management from the University of Maryland, University College, and has been awarded a masters degree in personnel management and supervision by Central Michigan University.
In his position as executive secretary, Lt. Col. Boyette served as program manager and financial manager for all civilian non-appropriated funds within the Departments of the Air Force and Army. He also provided program and financial manager guidance for selected other DoD civilian non-appropriated funds at such agencies as the National Security Agency, Defense Intelligence Agency, Defense Mapping Agency, and the Defense Logistics Agency. He retired as executive secretary on Sept. 30, 1993.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday, Aug. 20 at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg, Va. Interment will follow with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery, following a service at Ft. Myer Chapel at 9 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 16. Covenant Funeral Service of Fredericksburg, Va. is handling the arrangements.
He is survived by five children, George Boyette III of Xenia, Ohio, Debra Ambrose of Woodbridge, Va., Terri Desch of Xenia, Ohio, Kiva Straser of Riva, Md., and Tonya Harmon of King George County Virginia; three brothers, James O. Boyette of Montana, Robert O. Boyette of California, and Dr. Charles O. Boyette of North Carolina; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary; a son, Robert; and a brother, William.

COUNCIL -- James A.Mitchell, 56, died Friday, Aug. 18, 2006 at Duke Health Raleigh Hospital. He was employed with International Paper and a 33 degree Mason and a Shriner.
Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22 at the Clarkton School of Discovery by Pastor Janson Troutman. Burial will follow in Philadelphia Seventh Day Adventist Church Cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the service.

Mitchell of Killeen, Texas, Eekiel Mitchell of Ringgold, Ga., Dr. Jesse Mitchell of Laguna Hills, Calif., and Charles J. Mitchell Jr. of Huntsville, Ala.; six sisters, Darlene Small of Kansas City, Kan., Arlene Penick of Stockton, Calif., Dr. Jacquelene Adiele of Killeen, Texas, Carlene Moody and Dr. Charlene Mitchell, both of Rolesville, and Elene Rodgers of Morenci, Mich.; and three granddaughters.
Viewing will be at the funeral home on Monday, Aug. 21 from noon until 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 9-11 a.m. Viewing will be at the school Tuesday following the service.
Three will be a wake Monday from 6:30-8 p.m. at the funeral home at which time fraternal rites will be performed.

WILLINGBORO, N.J. Teresa Gail Burke, 57, formerly of the Mt. Olive community in the Whiteville area, died Friday, Aug. 18, 2006 at Virtua Memorial Hospital in Mt. Holly, N.J.

NAKINA Minister Lawrence N. Gore, 63, died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2006 at his residence. He was a grocery store foreman.
Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 21 at Central Missionary Baptist Church in Whiteville with the Minister Cathy Moore officiating. Burial will follow in the Zion Plain Cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

ELIZABETHTOWN James Jolly, born March 27, 1929 died July 2, 2006 at Bladen County Hospital.

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. Mae McKee Spillar, 82, widow of Robert Joseph Spillar, entered into eternal rest on Friday, Aug. 18, 2006 at her residence.
She was born June 27, 1924 in Whiteville one of 11 children of the late Grover McKee and Hettie Ammons McKee. She graduated from Whiteville High School in 1941 and from the High Point, N.C. School of Nursing in 1945.
She serviced during the Korean War as a 1st Lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corp. She worked for many years as a school nurse for the Charleston County School District until her retirement in 1986.
A graveside service was held Monday, Aug. 21 at Mt. Pleasant Memorial Gardens. J. Henry Stuhr Funeral Home of Mt. Pleasant, S.C. handled the arrangements.
She is survived by her daughter, Rhonda Spillar Robinson and her husband Thomas Randall “Randy” Robinson of Sullivans Island, S.C.; two grandchildren, Tradd Randall Robinson and Margaret Anne Robinson, both of Sullivans Island, S.C.; two sisters, Elizabeth Fowler and her husband Edwin Fowler of Loris, S.C., and Kathlene Miller and her husband Jim Miller of Belmont; a cousin, Vida Cox of Clarkton, and several nieces and nephews.

WHITEVILLE Ethel “Ms. Bea” House died Thursday, Aug. 17, 2006 at Liberty Commons Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was the daughter of the late Claude McQueen and Sally Beverly McQueen and was preceded in death by her husband, Kesler C. House. She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church.
Final rites were held Sunday, Aug. 20 at McKenzie Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Stephen Bailey officiating with burial following in the Whiteville Memorial Cemetery. McKenzie Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
She is survived by her daughter, Edith House Nobles and husband, Sammy of Fair Bluff; a son, Jerry House of Whiteville; two brothers, Claude Rogers McQueen of Virginia, and Bobby McQueen and wife, Net of Fayetteville; three grandchildren, Lori Sellers and husband, Norman of Whiteville, Greg Nobles and wife, Julie of Wilmington, and Ryan Nobles of Fair Bluff; two great-grandchildren, Canyon and Bella Sellers, both of Whiteville.

BLADENBORO Joseph Andrew Shaw, 42, died Thursday, Aug. 17, 2006 at Sampson Regional Medical Center.
Final rites were held Sunday, Aug. 20 at The Lighthouse of Bladen County with the Reverends Gloria Wilkins and Ellen Bullard officiating. Burial followed in the Bladen Memorial Gardens. Lewis Funeral Home of Bladenboro handled the arrangements.

CERRO GORDO Henry Gaston Williamson Sr., 89, died Thursday, Aug. 17, 2006 at Premier Living at Lake Waccamaw. He was the son of the late Jesse Owen and Ella Nora Johnson Williamson Sr.
Williamson was a veteran of World War II serving in the United States Army Medical Corps and was a lifetime member of Williamson’s Crossroads Baptist Church.
In 1977 after 22 years of service to the United States Postal Service he retired as postmaster of the Cerro Gordo Post Office.
Final rites were held Sunday, Aug. 20 at Williamson’s Crossroads Baptist church with the Reverends Linzy Nance and Jesse P. Williams officiating. Entombment followed in Columbus Memorial Park Mausoleum, Whiteville. Worthington Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Elizabeth Lee Brittain Williamson; a daughter, Beck W. Mayo of Wilmington; a son, Henry G. Williamson Jr. of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

CHADBOURN Spurgeon Duncan, 68, died Friday, Aug. 18, 2006. He was the son of the late Abe and Lottie Cribb Duncan.
Duncan retired from the Public Works Department in Chadbourn after 25 years of service.
Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, Aug. 21 at Worthington Funeral Home with the Reverends William Jackie Godwin and Willard McPherson officiating. Burial will follow in the Chadbourn Memorial Cemetery. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Ester Mae Norris Duncan of the home; three daughters, Nelda D. Cartrette of Whiteville, Velda D. Ramsey and Amanda Gordon, both of Chadbourn; a son, Kenneth Ray Duncan of Chadbourn; a brother, Toy Duncan of Chadbourn; four sisters, Pat Harrelson of Clarendon, Betty Gail Duncan of Whiteville, Betty Louise Richardson of Tabor city, and Kathleen Richardson of Shallotte; four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

CHADBOURN Joseph Elmo Duncan, 77, died Monday, Aug. 21, 2006 at his residence. He was the son of the late Elmo and Essie Benton Duncan. He was a veteran serving in the army.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Leonard Duncan of the home; three sons, Delane Duncan of Rock Hill, S.C., Jesse Wayne Duncan and Jimmy Dale Duncan, both of Chadbourn; two daughters, Peggy Nobles and Darlene Simmons, both of Chadbourn; four brothers, Wesley Duncan of Flint, Mich., Ervin Duncan of Chadbourn, and Phillip Duncan of Whiteville; a sister, Olene Garrell of Chadbourn; five grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
