OBITUARIES
JOAN BANKS WELCH

JOHNS ISLAND, S.C. – Joan Banks Welch, 74, wife of Fred “Buddy” Joseph Welch Sr. and mother of Deborah Welch Long of Whiteville, died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2006 at her residence.

Welch was born Dec. 5, 1931 in Walterboro, a daughter of the late Brent Miller Banks and Alma Guess Banks. She was a member of The First Freewill Baptist Church of Charleston, S.C. and a past member of Ravenel United Methodist Church.

Final rites were held Wednesday, Aug. 23 at James A. Dyal Funeral Home Chapel, Summerville, S.C. Burial followed in Greenlawn Memorials Gardens, Waltersboro, S.C. James A. Dyal Funeral Home of Summerville, S.C. handled the arrangements.

Survivors including her husband are a son, Dr. Fred Joseph Welch Jr. and wife Debby of Charleston, S.C.; two daughters, Sheryl Welch Withington of Johns Island, S.C., and Deborah Welch Long of Whiteville; five grandchildren, Gregory Brent Welch Sr., James “Jody” Kelly Withington III, Tammy Elizabeth Hiott, Tracy Deniece Brown, and Tiffany Michelle Long; seven great-grandchildren and one which is Jessica Michelle Sibbett of Whiteville.

 

JOSEPH E. DUNCAN

CHADBOURN – Joseph Elmo Duncan, 77, died Monday, Aug. 21, 2006 at his residence. He was the son of the late Elmo and Essie Benton Duncan. He was a veteran serving in the United States Army and auto mechanic.

Final rites were held Wednesday, Aug. 23 at Worthington Funeral Home Chapel with the

Reverends Wesley Duncan, Louis Bass, and Jonathan Simmons officiating. Interment followed in Chadbourn Memorial Cemetery with military honors. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn handled the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Leonard Duncan of the home; three sons, Delane Duncan of Rock Hill, S.C., Jesse Wayne Duncan and Jimmy Dale Duncan, both of Chadbourn; two daughters, Peggy Nobles and Darlene Simmons, both of Chadbourn; four brothers, Wesley Duncan of Flint, Mich., Ervin Duncan of Chadbourn, Phillip Duncan and Hester Duncan, both of Whiteville; a sister, Olene Garrell of Chadbourn; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

 

JOANN B. CUNNINGHAM

WHITEVILLE – JoAnn Baldwin Cunningham, 62, died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2006 at her residence. She was a seamstress and retired from Whiteville Apparel.

Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25 at St. James A.M.E. Church with Pastor J.A. Richburg eulogizing. Burial will follow in Campground Cemetery. Smith Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

She is survived by her children, Jackie Sheree Cunningham, Payton C. Cunningham, Brenda C. Jones, Gwendolyn C. Murphy, Christopher C. Cunningham, and Antonio Graham Sr.; her sisters and brothers, Sylvia Smith, Cynthia Baldwin, Franklin Baldwin, Charles Baldwin, Hubert Baldwin, and Gilbert Baldwin.

Viewing will be from 1-6 p.m. Thursday (tonight) and a wake will be held from 7-8 p.m. at the funeral home. There will also be viewing one hour prior to the services on Friday at the church.

 

TERESA G. BURKE

WILLINGBORO, N.J. – Teresa Gail Burke, 57, formerly of the Mt. Olive community in Whiteville, died Friday, Aug. 18, 2006 at Virtua Memorial Hospital in Mt. Holly, N.J.

Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 24 at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church in Whiteville by the Rev. Algernon McKenzie. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, John Burke; three sisters, Sandra Powell Showers of Roselle, N.J., Tanga D. Powell of Whiteville, and Mary Toon Bowman of Fayetteville.

Viewing will be at the church Thursday following the service. Friends may visit the family at the home of Tanga Powell, 3203 Red Store Road, Whiteville.

 

MARTHA CLYDE
PIERCE COUNCIL

HALLSBORO – Martha Clyde Pierce Council, 95, died Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare. She was the last surviving sibling of 10 children of the late John William Pierce and Martha R. Young and was preceded in death by her husband Roy Smith Council. She was a member of Hallsboro Baptist Church.

Final rites will be held Friday, Aug. 25 at 11 a.m. at the McKenzie Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Ed Vogt officiating with burial following in the Pierce Cemetery. McKenzie Mortuary of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include three sons, Leroy Council of Hallsboro, Willis R. Council and Andrew Council, both of Whiteville; three grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild.

Visitation will be Thursday (tonight) at the funeral home from 7-8:30 p.m.

DAVID P. HAMMOND

WAYNESBORO, Pa. --David P. Hammond, 80, a resident of Quincy United Methodist Home, Quincy, Pa., and formerly of Cottage 303B, Quincy Village, died at 1:10 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2006, in the nursing home. He had been in failing health for the past three years and critically ill for the past 10 days. 

Born June 6, 1926, in Cerro Gordo, he was the son of the late James P. and Theo (Early) Hammond. He lived his early life in the Cerro Gordo area. 

Hammond graduated from Cerro Gordo High School with the class of 1944. He later graduated from Duke University with the class of 1949. 

He served with the United States Navy during World War II and the Korean Conflict. 

He and his wife of over 28 years, Elizabeth (Parker) Hammond, were married on June 10, 1978 in Olney, Md.  They have lived at Quincy for the past 12 years. 

Following his service in the military, Hammond worked as a civilian for the U.S. Public Health Service, as a Health Advisor for the Center for Disease Control, from 1952 until his retirement in 1980. He later wrote columns for The News Reporter and The Record Herald for five years each, respectively.  He later had some of these columns published in a book.  

Hammond was a member of Quincy United Methodist Church, American Legion, V.F.W., and the Duke Alumni Association. 

He enjoyed gardening and writing.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Holly V. Hammond of Seneca, S.C.; two sons, Richard M. Hammond of Duluth, Ga., and John B. Hammond of Dahlonega, Ga.; four grandchildren; a sister, Nancy Moore of Boston, Mass.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Judy Hammond; and one brother, Phillip Hammond. He was also preceded in death by his first wife Melba Hammond and his second wife, Dorothy Hammond. 

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 28 in the Bryson Room of Quincy United Methodist Home, Orphanage Road, Quincy, with Pastor Ruth A. Hollister and Rev. John A. Ile officiating. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.   

There will be no public viewing.

BETTY JEAN B. WHITE

CHADBOURN – Betty Jean Blackburn White, 61, died Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2006 at her residence. She was the daughter of the late Challie Blackburn.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25 at Worthington Funeral Home with the Rev. James Hester officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Tabor City. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include a son, Shannon M. White of Monroe; mother, Norma Myrtle Russ Blackburn of Fayetteville; two brothers, James Arnold Blackburn of White Oak and Bobby Blackburn of Alabama; and two grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Thursday (tonight) from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

 

CAROLYN H. RANSOM

BLADENBORO – Carolyn H. Ransom, 80, died Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2006 at Bladen County Hospital, Elizabethtown. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Velton Ransom; a brother, James Weatherly; a sister, Edna Newton; and a daughter, Helen Ransom.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 25 at Bladen Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Cameron McGill officiating. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include a son Ralph Julius Ransom of Florida; four daughters, Margaret Muraca of Bladenboro, Patricia Kupchf of New Jersey, Ellen Linch of Darlington, S.C., and Betty Lou Saletto of Timmonsville, S.C.; two sisters, Lena Brafford of Fayetteville, and Sara Driggers of  Bennettsville, S.C.; 12 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 6:30-8:30 Thursday (tonight) at the funeral home.

CLAUDIE J. RHODES

JACKSONVILLE – Claudie P. Jack Rhodes died Monday, Aug. 21, 2006 at Onslow Memory Hospital.

Final rites will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 26 at Sanudalis Funeral Home, 212 Bell Fork Rd., Jacksonville.

Survivors include four daughters, Mamie Beatty of Bolton, Alice Hodges of Jacksonville, Irish Halloway of California, Kay Rhodes of Maryland, and a son, C.J. Rhodes of New York.
