OLD INDIAN TRAIL, Tenn. Frederick A. Serral, 84, died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2006. He was born in Ambler, Pa. on April 30, 1922.
Serral graduated from Ambler High School in 1940 and joined the United States Marine Corps. He was a tobacco buyer for the Austin Company of Greenville, Tenn. He was named president of the company in 1980.
When he was a visitor to the Chadbourn Senior Center when he came and visited relatives in the area.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Barbara Elliott Serral, formerly of Chadbourn; a daughter, Amie Serral Moyer of Dallas, Texas; two sons, Fred H. Serral of Ravenel, S.C., and Elliott A. Serral of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and four grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the renovation fund or the organ fund at Asbury United Methodist Church or to the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation, P.O. Box 998, Quantico, Va. 22134-0998.
CLARENDON Rachel Elizabeth Norris, infant daughter of Brandon and Leslie Norris, died Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2006 in MUSC, Charleston, S.C. She was born Aug. 18 in Loris, S.C.
Final rites were held Saturday, Aug. 26 at the Inman Chapel, conducted by the Reverends John McPherson and Dallas Byrd, with interment in Clarendon Cemetery, Clarendon. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.
She is survived by her parents; a brother, Chase Norris of Clarendon; paternal grandparents, Marty and Pam Norris of Clarendon; and maternal grandfather, Kenneth Cooper of Lancaster, S.C.
BOLTON Rachel Jackson, 36, died Friday, Aug. 25, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare.
Arrangements will be announced by Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville.
BLADENBORO Robert K. Packer, 81, died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2006 at Cape Fear Valley Hospital, Fayetteville. He was the son of the late Gaston and Carrie Packer. He was predeceased by two sisters, Vernie Monroe, and Gladys Gavin, and a brother, Charles Lindburg Packer.
Packer served in the United States Army and was also a prisoner of war.
The burial will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 30 at Bladenboro Memorial Gardens in Elizabethtown, before the funeral service is conducted at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Bladenboro with the Rev. Bert Young officiating. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include three sons, Robert “Kent” Packer and Greg Packer, both of Bladenboro, and Freddie M. Packer of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a daughter, Patty McArdle of Fayetteville; three brothers, S.G. Packer of Lumberton, Scott Packer of Atlanta, Ga., and Hasty Packer of Asheville; a sister, Charity Miller of Sunset Beach; and seven grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Bladenboro Rescue Squad of Bladenboro.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
WHITEVILLE Iris Best Manuel, 50, died Friday, Aug. 25, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare.

DUBLIN Dale Edward Stec, 61, died Friday, Aug. 25, 2006 at his residence. He retired from the United States Army, Golden Knight, as a Master Sgt. E8.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, Aug. 28 at the Bladen Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry Green officiating. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Elsie Stec, his mother, Blanche Spatol, of Irving, N.Y.; three sons, Nathan Stec of Hickory, Bryan Stec, stationed in Pakistan, and Jason Hall of Seattle, Wash.; a daughter, Kim Hall of Seattle, Wash.; and two stepdaughters, Lisa Pait of Dublin, and Beth Kinlaw of Bladenboro; two brothers, Paul Spatol of Cheektowaga, N.Y., and Tom Spatol of Louisville, Ky.; three sisters, Ronda Marvel and Bonnie Spence, both of Angola, N.Y., and Dianne Franczyk of Bartlett, Tenn., and 10 grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Veterans Association.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service and at other times at the home.
NAKINA -- Pritchard Oliver Ward, 98, died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare System in Whiteville.
Ward was a retired farmer and a member of Poley Bridge Baptist Church in Nakina.
He was the son of the late Solon and Annie Belle Clemmons Ward and the husband of the late Letha Coleman Ward. He was preceded in death by a son, Buddy Ward; and a granddaughter, Carol Ward James.
Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Monday, Aug. 28 at Palmyra Baptist Church with the Rev. Oscar Hullender officiating. Interment will follow in the Coleman-Ward Cemetery, Nakina. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.
Pallbearers will John Ball, John Ball Jr., Johnny Faulk, Jerry Gore, Daryl Hardwick, and Bennie Ward.
Visitation will be 2-3 p.m. (one hour prior to service) at the church.
PEMBROKE Johnnie V. Powers, 77, formerly of Columbus County, died Sunday, Aug. 27, 2006 at SunBridge. He was the son of the late Jarvie and Mary Frances Hulon Powers.
Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn.
He is survived by two daughters, Jean P. McKeithan of Ash and Rebecca Powers of Lumberton; four sons, John Dean Powers of Nakina, Tony Powers of Whiteville, Albert Powers of Newport, and Donald Powers of Whiteville; three sisters, Eula Jackson of Littlefield, Kathleen Strickland of Clarkton, and Elizabeth Callihan of Bladenboro; 13 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.
RIEGELWOOD Richard Hall, 93, died Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2006 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington.
Final rites will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 29 at 3 p.m. from Mt. Pleasant AME Zion Church. Burial will follow in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Smith Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
He is survived by one daughter, Gennie Brown of Riegelwood; and a sister, Hazel Brown of Henderson.
Viewing will be on Tuesday, Aug. 29 from 1-5 p.m. at the funeral home and there will be a wake on Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at the church in Riegelwood.
CHADBOURN Margaret Wilson Lewis Peal, 89, died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2006 at Carteret General Hospital in Morehead City. She was the daughter of the late John and Annie Swails Lewis and the widow of William Irving Peal Jr.
Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 29 at Chadbourn Baptist Church with the Rev. Sean Roberds officiating. Interment will follow in the Chadbourn Memorial Cemetery.
Survivors include two sons, John Peal of Lake Waccamaw, and George “Buddy” Peal of Morehead City; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Monday (tonight) at the funeral home.
CHADBOURN -- James Neil McKeithan, 78, died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2006 at his residence. He was the son of the late Benjamin and Anabel Stephens McKeithan. He was preceded in death by his wife, Agnes Creech McKeithan in 1990; two sons, Jimmy McKeithan and Randy Lynn McKeithan.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 29 at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. William Jackie Godwin officiating. Interment will follow in Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery, Chadbourn. Worthington Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Gwendolyn Cartrette McKeithan of the home; two step-sons, Phillip Tyler and wife, Laura of Myrtle Beach, S.C. and Joseph Dewayne Tyler and Amanda of Chadbourn; daughter-in-laws, Beverly Edwards of Goldsboro and Debbie H. McKeithan of Chadbourn; two sisters, Margaret Ward of Charlotte and Nelda Ray Ankers of Raleigh.
Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
