School board
filings end soon

It’s encouraging to see that the number of candidates running for school board seats in both the city and county school systems is the highest it’s been in years – 11 candidates.

Two seats in both systems are up for grabs.

There has been no cataclysmic event that’s precipitated the higher number of candidates filing. Instead, the candidates we’ve spoken with simply want to make their respective schools better.

Every school system has its own set of challenges, be it in Wake County where the biggest challenge is to find funds to build enough classrooms and new schools to keep up with population growth. With a poverty rate of more than 20 percent, Columbus County has an entirely different set of dynamics.

Having competent and well-informed school board members who understand their communities and how to deal with the positives and negatives in their school systems is critical.

Filing for the county board ends today while the city system’s filing period ends Aug. 14.
