NEW BERN -- James Elery Taylor, 75, died Tuesday Dec. 5, 2006 at Columbus County Regional Healthcare, Whiteville, after a courageous battle with his illness.
Born in Chadbourn on Oct. 6, 1931 he grew up farming. After graduation he married the love of his life, Betty, and went to work with Montgomery Ward. He worked there from 1951 until retirement in 1995 and was their most long-time employee nationwide. He was owner-operator of Granny’s Donuts for 12 years. In all this time, he never lost his love of farming which he continued up until his illness. Also, after his Montgomery Ward retirement, he began to raise goats, which he did with a passion. Elery met many people over the years and made many friends. He never met a stranger. Elery was always quick with a funny remark or reply. His wit among friends and relatives will be greatly missed.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Alton and Irene Taylor, and his daughter, Paula Darlene Taylor.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Taylor of New Bern; a son, James Elery Taylor Jr. and wife Sissy of New Bern; two daughters, Sherry Bouher of New Bern, Terrie Jeanine Taylor of Chadbourn; a brother, Roger Taylor and wife Marie of Charlotte; two sisters, Lee Meares and husband Pete of Chadbourn, Ruth Sykes of Leesburg, Fla.; grandchildren, Taya and James Bouher, Erin Elizabeth and James Elery “Trey” Taylor III, Jamie Melton, Tammy Combs and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec, 8, at Cotten Chapel with the Reverends Jack Bowen and Randy Hawkins officiating. Burial will follow at Greenleaf Memorial Park. The family receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday (tonight) at Cotten Funeral Home.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, Dec. 12, at 7 p.m. at the Chadbourn Church of God, Chadbourn.

NAKINA -- Simon Stanley, 46, died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2006, at Columbus Regional Healthcare, Whiteville. He was a factory worker.
Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 8, at Zion Plain Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Moses C. Herring officiating. Burial will follow in the George Washington Stanley Cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Cynthia Earlene Stanley; a daughter, Ebony Eureka Stanley of Fayetteville; a son, Simon DeMond Stanley of Forestville, Md.; his parents, Hezekiah and Mary Gladys Stanley of Nakina; five sisters, Mary Evelyn Coleman of Nakina, Felicia S. Stanley, Lettie Frances Jenrette, and Anna B. Stanley of Sunset Beach, and Katrina Frazier of Suitland, Md.; four brothers, Neamon H. Stanley, Avery L. Stanley, and Arthur L. HORACE ‘H.C.’ EDWARDS JR.
BLADENBORO -- Horace “H.C.” Edwards Jr., 85, died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2006. He was born in Columbus County to Horace and Lula Edwards on Oct. 10, 1921.
Edwards was a barber for 50 years. He was a member of the VFW and Lion’s Club. He was also a member of the Shriners and served as the Master of the Masonic Lodge and Past Potentate of the Bladen County Shriners Club. Edwards served his country in the Army during World War II and retired from the National Guard after 30 years of service.
He was a faithful member of Galeed Baptist Church for more than 60 years where he served as a deacon and in many other capacities. He was very active in the Joy Group at Galeed Baptist Church and the members of the church family became very dear friends.
Edwards was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. He made a great impact in the community and upon all those he met. He will be greatly missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Esther Edwards; brothers, Wilson, Alton, and Otto; and sisters, Amanda, Kate, and Esta Mae.
He is survived by his sons, Andy Edwards and wife Lynne of Chapel Hill, and Kenneth Edwards and wife, Kay of Lawrenceville, Ga.; daughters, Patsy Bowman and husband Jimmie of Greensboro, and Betty Miller and husband Steve of Greenville; sister, Anna Belle Powell of Clarkton; eight grandchildren, Jennifer Hughes of Mooresville, Meghan Wood of Wilmington, Stuart Edwards of Nashville, Tenn., Bethanie Harman of Sevierville, Tenn., Kyndal Edwards, Parker Edwards, and Emory Edwards, all of Lawrenceville, Ga., and Steven Miller of Greenville; and twp great-grandchildren, Bowman Hughes and Ella Hughes, both of Mooresville.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 7, at Galeed Baptist Church and at other times at the home. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 8, at Galeed Baptist Church with Dr. Mack Roberts, Reverends Bruce Cannon and Bud Parrish officiating. Burial will follow in the Galeed Baptist Church Cemetery.

WHITEVILLE -- Irdell Stevens, 86, died Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2006, in Columbus Regional Healthcare, here. He was born in Columbus County Aug. 7, 1920, the son of the late Jasper Stevens and Sallie Ikner Stevens. He was the husband of the late Louetta Tedder Stevens.
Stevens was a retired salesman with Scottish Packing Company in Lumberton. He was a member of Lebanon Masonic Lodge 207 and served as chaplain for 44 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church and a member of the Bunn-Keystone Sunday school class.
Final rites will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Kendall Cameron. Interment will follow in the Flynn Cemetery. Peacock’s Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

FORT PIERCE, Fla. -- Ruth Faulk McBride died Saturday, Dec. 2, 2006, here. She was the daughter of the late Ellis and Girlie Faulk and the widow of A.J. McBride.

NAKINA -- Dorotea Gore, 77, died Monday, Dec. 4, 2006. She was born Feb. 22, 1929 in Wahiawa, Oahu, Hawaii, the daughter of the late Semion and Edwarde Cedeha Daymil.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 7, at Peacock’s Chapel In The Pines with the Rev. Carroll Fitzgerald. Interment will be in Bethesda United Methodist Church Cemetery. Peacock’s Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

LELAND -- Rufus Todd, 85, died Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2006, at Brunswick Cove Nursing Center. He was a chemical lab technician, and a veteran of the United States Army.
Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 10, at Union Baptist Church in Lake Waccamaw with the Rev. Ronald Campbell officiating. Burial will follow in the Mitchell field Cemetery in Clarkton. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

RIEGELWOOD -- Lloyd Nimrod Brown, 86, of the Sandyfield community, died Monday, Dec. 4, 2006, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice Care Center, Wilmington.
Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. James Brown officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Smith Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

CHADBOURN -- Etherlene C. Booker, 55, died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2006, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington.

RIEGELWOOD -- Gennie Ree Brown, 66, of the Armour community, died Friday, Dec. 1, 2006, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 8, at Mt. Pleasant A.M.E. Zion Church with the Rev. Mapson officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Smith Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include seven children, Anthony Jenkins and Alfred Brown, both of Springfield, Mass., James Rodney Bryant, Alcestia Sutton, Donald Brown, Kenneth Brown, and Doris Mallory, all of Riegelwood.

BOLTON -- Samuel David “S.D.” Mitchell, 72, died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2006. He was born April 7, 1934 in Bladen County, the son of the late Haywood and Vera Young Mitchell.
He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church and sang with Canaan Land Travelers gospel group. He worked as a millwright with E.W. Godwin & Sons Lumber Company of Wilmington.
Final rites were held Sunday, Dec. 3, at New Hope Baptist Church with the Reverends Don Carter and Mike Jacobs. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Peacock’s Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Pennie Patrick Mitchell; three daughters, Patricia Tatum of Bolton, Delma Hathway of Whiteville, and Francine Ramos of Bolton; two brothers, Haywood Ludwell Mitchell of Lake Waccamaw, and Earlon Mitchell of Council; four sisters, Martha Jane Bright of Lake Waccamaw, Judy Young of Roseboro, Ludie Graham of Lake Waccamaw, and Janie Ellen Owens of Lake Waccamaw; nine grandchldren and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Samuel “Ellis” Mitchell, five brothers, Alton, Cleo, Daniel, Autry Dean, and Elvis Mitchell; three sisters, Doris Young, Tessie Graham, and Aretha Bass.
NAKINA -- Ponnell Evans, 72, died Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2006. she was born on Oct. 3, 1934 in Columbus County the daughter of the late Dillon Jacobs and Allie Smith Jacobs.
Evans was formerly employed with Loris Manufacturing Company for 17 years and Columbus County Hospital. She was a member of Palmyra Baptist Church.
Final rites will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 10, at Palmyra Baptist Church with the Reverends Oscar Hullender and Kenneth Smith officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Peacock’s Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
Survived by her husband, Rev. Eugene M. WHITEVILLE -- Dr. Phillip John Seroska, 62, died Monday, Dec. 4, 2006. He was born March 15, 1944 in King County, N.Y., the son of the late John and Antonette Seroska.
He graduated from Georgetown University with a medical degree. He operated a family practice in Mountaintop, Pa.
Seroska relocated to Whiteville and as an emergency room physician in Columbus and Bladen county hospitals.
A memorial service was held Wednesday, Dec. 6, at Peacock’s Chapel In The Pines with the Rev. Richard Priest officiating. Peacock’s Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Donna L. Seroska; two stepdaughters, Kaitlyn Walker of Raleigh, and Jennifer Pascarella of Youngtown, Ohio; a stepson, Erik Walker of the home; two daughters, Amy Seroska and Emily Seroska, both of Mountaintop, Pa.

HALLSBORO -- Lee A. Levingston, 74, died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2006, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington. He was a factory worker.
Final rites will be held at noon on Monday, Dec. 11, at Lee’s Chapel AME Zion Church in Bolton with the Rev. Glen Floyd officiating. Burial will follow at Carvers Creek Community Cemetery in Council. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include a daughter and four sons, two sisters, Meller Freeman of Bolton and Frances Seawell of Alabama.
