Relay for Life, the fun weekend event that raises thousands of dollars for cancer research, is held in April, right?

That’s true, but the effort to help find a cure for cancer goes on year ’round for a lot of people who are always on the lookout for a unique way to raise money for Relay for Life. Such is the case for Angela Smith and Penny Grainger who will be wrapping Christmas gifts for donations to the cause.

“Angela, the captain of the Lake Waccamaw United Methodist Church team and I, the co-captain, are wrapping any and all Christmas gifts for a donation for Relay For Life,” said Penny Grainger. “Bring your Christmas gifts to the Lake Waccamaw United Methodist Church Hut and let our Relay wrapping team do your gift wrapping this season.

“The only requirement is that you bring your gifts boxed and labeled and we do the rest,” she continued. “We have a variety of donated paper and bows to choose from.”

Grainger said people can enjoy refreshments while they wait, and they can made a donation to the American Cancer Society.

“Wrap up a cure! Come one and all,” she encouraged.

They will be wrapping at the church hut on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 16-17 from 1 to 5 p.m.

Grainger said Jeana McDuffie, a member of Lake Waccamaw United Methodist Church, said it was not only a joy to get all of her gifts wrapped, but a joy to participate in the fellowship while waiting.

“Angela came up with this idea last year and in two days our team raised more than $500, just wrapping Christmas gifts,” Grainger said. “For those individuals who don’t exactly know how they can contribute to Relay, this is just another unique idea. Not only is it a fundraiser for a very worthwhile cause, it’s just another way to relieve some of the stress of the holiday season so that more people can concentrate on the true meaning of Christmas.”
