WHITEVILLE -- Thelma Mercer McPherson, 82, died Friday, Dec. 8, 2006. She was born Feb. 14, 1924 in Columbus County, the daughter of the late Willie Van and Chellie Edwards Mercer. She was the widow of John Phillip McPherson.
Mrs. McPherson was a member of Victory Baptist Church. She was formerly employed with Moskows Department Store.
Final rites were held Monday, Dec. 11 at Victory Baptist Church with the Reverends Tim Driggers, Willard McPherson, and Ray Stuart officiating. Interment followed in Peacock’s Columbus Memorial Park. Peacock’s Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.
She is survived by six sons, Billy McPherson and wife, Pat, of Whiteville, Kenneth McPherson and wife, Rhonda, of Whiteville, Dale McPherson and wife, Jackie of Southport, Phil McPherson and wife, Carolyn, of Whiteville, Rev. Willard McPherson of Chadbourn, and Andy McPherson and wife, Cindy, of Southport; a brother, J.D. Mercer of Whiteville; a sister, Nellie Dawsey of Loris, S.C.; 20 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Serving as pallbearers were Glenn, Axel, Lee, Jesse, J.P., and Ian McPherson.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Victory Baptist Church Building Fund, 2012 South Madison Street, Whiteville, N.C. 28472.
FAIR BLUFF -- Edith L. Edwards, 80, died Monday, Dec. 11, 2006, at Columbus Regional Healthcare, Whiteville.

‘MISS BOBBI’ EARP
WHITEVILLE -- Mairlyn Roberts “Miss Bobbi” Earp, died Dec. 6, 2006, at Columbus Regional Healthcare, Whiteville. She was born on Oct. 5, 1922, the oldest daughter of Reva and Manley Roberts of Galien, Mich.
Mrs. Earp, a retired elementary school teacher from Williams Township School, was a resident of Liberty Commons Nursing and Rehabilitation of Whiteville for the past four years. She was valedictorian of the graduating class of 1940 of Galien High School, Galien, Mich. She attended Western Michigan Univeristy in Kalamazoo, Mich. She graduated from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke with a Bachelor’s degree in elementary education in 1965.
She was a long-time member of Tabor City Baptist Church where she was a Sunday school teacher, a Bible drill leader, a member of the senior choir, the hand bell choir and the Charity Rogers circle. She was a member of the Southeastern Oratorio Society of Columbus County and sang with the Sweet Adelines, International for many years. She was a member of the Williams Township Retired Teachers Association.
Mrs. Earp was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Navy as an Air Traffic Controller at Glenview Naval Air Station, in Glenview, Ill. She traveled extensivedly throughout the United States. She also visited Cananda, England, the Holy Lands, Japan, Hong Kong, and China.
Final rites will be conducted at Tabor City Baptist Church in Tabor City on Wednesday, Dec. 13, at 11 a.m. with Dr. David Coleman officiating. A private burial will be held at the National Cemetery in Wilmington, on Thursday, Dec. 14. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City is handling the arrangements.
Mrs. Earp was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Roger Earp Sr., and her brothers, Maurice Roberts, and Philip Roberts.
She is survived by a daughter, Judith Earp Sarvis of Whiteville; her son, Roger Earp and his wife, Love, of Beaulaville; her oldest grandson, Joel Sarvis of Greensboro; a granddaughter, Brett and her husband, Kyle Lanier, of Beulaville; and a grandson, Thomas Earp of Greenville.
Other survivors include her younger sister, Patricia Walters of Ocala, Fla.; her nephew, John Walters, and his wife, Rebecca of Hudson, Fla.; and her niece, Wendy Walters and her great-nephew, Chad Walters of Ocala, Fla.
The family will receive friends and relatives at the church from 10-11 a.m. prior to the service.
Donations may be made to the Church Music Fund of Tabor City Baptist, Tabor City, N.C. in lieu of flowers.
TABOR CITY -- Mary Frances Carlisle, 93, of the Clarendon community, died Dec. 9, 2006, at Columbus Regional Healthcare, Whiteville. She was predeceased in death by her husband, Perry Green Carlisle and parents, Charlie Andrews and Susan Long Andrews Gore.
Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 12, at Bethel United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in hte Bethel Memorial Cemetery. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include a son, Charles Green Carlisle of Clarendon; two daughters, Annie Pearl King of Clarendon, and Linda Harpoer of Vicksburg, Miss.; a sister, Myrtle Long of Tabor City; and a brother, John James Gore of Jacksonville, Fla.; 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchldren.
She was predeceased also by a stepson, Sammie Carlisle.
BLADENBORO -- Horace “H.C.” Edwards Jr., 85, died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2006. He was born in Columbus County to Horace and Lula Edwards on Oct. 10, 1921.
Edwards was a barber for 50 years. He was a member of the VFW and Lion’s Club. He was also a member of the Shriners and served as the Master of the Masonic Lodge and Past Potentate of the Bladen County Shriners Club. Edwards served his country in the Army during World War II and retired from the National Guard after 30 years of service.
He was a faithful member of Galeed Baptist Church for more than 60 years where he served as a deacon and in many other capacities. He was very active in the Joy Group at Galeed Baptist Church and the members of the church family became very dear friends.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. He made a great impact in the community and upon all those he met. He will be greatly missed.
Edwards is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Esther Edwards; brothers, Wilson, Alton, and Otto; and sisters, Amanda, Kate, and Esta Mae.
He is survived by his sons, Andy Edwards and wife Lynne of Chapel Hill, and Kenneth Edwards and wife, Kay of Lawrenceville, Ga.; daughters, Patsy Bowman and husband Jimmie of Greensboro, and Betty Miller and husband Steve of Greenville; sister, Anna Belle Powell of Clarkton; eight grandchildren, Jennifer Hughes of Mooresville, Meghan Wood of Wilmington, Stuart Edwards of Nashville, Tenn., Bethanie Harman of Sevierville, Tenn., Kyndal Edwards, Parker Edwards, and Emory Edwards, all of Lawrenceville, Ga., and Steven Miller of Greenville; and two great-grandchildren, Bowman Hughes and Ella Hughes, both of Mooresville.
The funeral was held Friday, Dec. 8, at Galeed Baptist Church with Dr. Mack Roberts, Rev. Bruce Cannon and Rev. Bud Parrish officiating. Burial will followed in the Galeed Baptist Church Cemetery.

DUBLIN -- Angelina McDaniel Parker, 73, died suddenly Thursday, Dec. 7, 2006, at her home. She was preceded in death by a son, Harold L. Parker Jr.
Final rites were held Sunday, Dec. 10, with the Rev. Joe Foster officiating. Burial followed in the Allen Cemetery. Kinlaw Funeral Home of Elizabethtown handled the arrangements.
Survivors include her husband, Harold Lindbergh Parker Sr. of the home; a son, Roy L. Parker of the home; a daughter, Etta P. Anton of Brick, N.J., two sisters, Marie Davis of Elizabethtown and JoAnn Parker of Whiteville; two brothers, George H. McDaniel of Elizabethtown, and Forrest McDaniel of Dublin; and three granddaughters.

WHITEVILLE -- Myrtie Powell Caffee, 91, died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2006, at Columbus Regional Healthcare, here. She was the daughter of the late Solon Vance Powell and Lucy Soles Powell and was preceded in death by her husband, John Jesse Caffee and her grandson, Randy Harold Caffee.
Mrs. Caffee was a member of White Marsh Baptist Church.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 13, at McKenzie Mortuary Chapel with the Reverends Carroll Fonvielle and Brian Wible officiating. Burial will follow in Columbus Memorial Park. McKenzie Mortuary is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include a daughter, Joyce C. Russ of Whiteville; two sons, Jesse Harold Caffee and wife Elizabeth of Sandy Creek, and Gerald Thomas Caffee and wife Nancy of Hartsville, S.C.; six grandchldren, and 13 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Tuesday night at the funeral home from 7-8:30 p.m.
EVERGREEN -- Adrian Dominic McDuffie, 18, died Friday, Dec. 8, 2006, at Columbus Regional Healthcare, Whiteville.
Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 13, at First Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Lionel Cartwright officiating. Burial will follow in the Belvue Cemetery, Chadbourn. Smith Funeral home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include his father, Adolphus Delane McDuffie Sr.; his mother, Diana E. Hamer McDuffie; a sister, Natasha McDuffie of Evergreen; three brothers, Adolphus Delane McDuffie Jr. of Los Angeles, Ca.if., Anthony Demetrius McDuffie and Andre Dwight McDuffie, both of Evergreen; his paternal grandmother, Wilhelmina Williamson of Chadbourn; his maternal grandmother, Louise Hamer Simpkins of Chadbourn; and his maternal grandfather, Bert Gore of Chadbourn.
CHADBOURN -- Jennie Mae Vann, 87, died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2006, at her home.
Final rites were held Saturday, Dec. 9, at Mt. Tabor Missionary Baptist Church, Cerro Gordo, with the Rev. Kevin Bellamy officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. S&L Funeral Home of Fair Bluff handled the arrangements.
Survivors include four daughters, Celestine Elliott of Washington, D.C., Ernestine Vann Gibson of Boardman, Doris Vann Carter of Cerro Gordo, and Geneva Vann Dee of Evergreen; a sister, Katie Jenkins Hamilton of Lake Waccamaw; six grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchldren.
BLADENBORO -- Jordan McNeil, 68, died Friday, Dec. 8, 2006, at The Carrol S. Roberson Hospice Center, Fayetteville.

He is survived by a sister, Minister Roxie Loyd of Bladenboro.

BLADENBORO -- Leona Edelle Hester Collier, 98, died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2006, at her home. She was born July 3, 1908 in Bladenboro to Francis and Sara Green Hester.
Mrs. Collier graduated from Bladenboro High School and Miller-Mott and worked for a Whiteville attorney, Manley Toon. After her marriage she became a full-time homemaker.
The service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Collier will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 12, at Western Prong Baptist Church with the Rev. Warren Hill officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.
She is survived by her three sons, Arthur Gray Collier Jr. and wife, Esther of Bladenboro; Hal Franklin Collier and wife, Anne of Atlanta, Ga.; Phil Douglas Collier and wife, Regina of Bladenboro; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchldren; a sister, Valeria Goodwin of Southern Pines; a brother, Gene Hickman Sr. and wife, Virginia of Buies Creek.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Arthur Gray Collier Sr.; three sisters, Evelyn Dove, Mildred Washam, and Katrine Munroe and a brother, Dewitt Hickman. Special thanks to Shirley West for providing such loving care to our mother for nine years.

Smith was a United States Army Veteran.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Thomas Stephens, 53, formerly of Whiteville, died Thursday, Dec. 7, 2006, at McLeod Medical Center, Dillon, S.C.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 12, at New Simpson Creek Holiness Church in Loris, S.C. with the Elder Nathan Gause officiating. Burial will follow in the Stephens-Wright Cemetery in Tabor City. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include a daughter, Penekela Perkins of Norfolk, Va.; two sons, Ikhanton Octavius Gause of Charlotte, and Thomas Stephens Jr. of New York; four sisters, Mae Teaste and Sarah P.
