Stallions split with N. Brunswick

LELAND – The South Columbus boys basketball team suffered its fourth straight loss Tuesday night after taking the North Brunswick Scorpion to the limit in a 69-65 decision at the NBHS gym.
The South Columbus girls took their second straight win as they topped the Lady Scorpions 41-24 after trailing 11-0 at the end of the first quarter.
It was the first night of Waccamaw 1A-2A Conference play for both schools.

Coach Nathan Faulk’s Stallion boys led 22-16 after one quarter and North Brunswick held a 33-32 halftime advantage. South Columbus took a 51-50 edge into the final quarter.
North Brunswick’s Keith Bress was the game’s top scorer with 20 points. Tyrone Robbins and Josh Balloon each added 11 points for the Scorpions.
Bryant Edwards and Derrick Clay led South Columbus with 17 points apiece. Brandon Keel added 10 for the Stallions, who are now 0-1 in conference and 2-4 overall.

The North Brunswick girls jumped to their 11-0 lead in the first quarter but were held the to six points the entire second half.
“We couldn’t get any shots to fall the first quarter,” said SCHS coach Brett Burroughs. “I just told our girls to forget about the first quarter and keep taking the shots. Some of the shots started falling after that and that helped us step it up on defense.”
Amanda Dowe, the Lady Stallions’ 6-foot-3 sophomore center scored a game-high 17 points as South Columbus improved to 1-0 in conference and 2-4 overall. She also blocked seven shots.
