with strong 2nd-half rallies

After holding leads most of the way, the Whiteville High School boys and girls basketball teams both dropped non-conference basketball games to the visiting East Bladen Eagles Monday night.
The Whiteville girls suffered their first loss of the season and their first homecourt setback since the 2002-03 season as East Bladen rallied to a 69-60 victory.
The Whiteville boys also saw a win slip through its hands as East Bladen dominated fourth-quarter play en route to a 63-50 victory. It was the Wolfpack’s sixth loss in eight games.
Both WHS teams had taken road wins over East Bladen last Thursday.
The Whiteville girls jumped to a quick 19-2 lead and held 37-29 halftime advantage before East Bladen went on an 18-6 surge in the third quarter.
Whiteville’s Paige McCallum scored 25 points with 19 coming in the first half. Karmen Jordan had 15 and Talena Faison followed with 11 as Coach Dudley Revels’ Lady Wolfpack saw its record slip to 7-1.
Deja Powell and Jatoya Kemp each had 16 points for the once-beaten Lady Eagles, Latajah Melvin with 12 and Kayla Davis with 18.
The Whiteville boys claimed an early 9-2 lead and did not trail until the final four minutes of the game. The Eagles’ Mike Smith and Jeffrey Bryant led the final quarter surge with Smith finishing with 29 points and Bryant following with 13. The Eagles cashed in on 21 of 30 attempts from the foul line.
Aaron Clark had 16 points for Whiteville, which managed to score only four points in the final six minutes. Nur Abdullah scored 12.
