Lady Pack to open play
tonight in Pinecrest
basketball tournament

The Whiteville High School girls basketball team will compete in the Pinecrest High School Invitational Tournament tonight and Friday night at Southern Pines.

Coach Dudley Revels’ Lady Wolfpack will go against the host Pinecrest tonight at 8 in the opening round. The other first-round game will have Richmond County taking on Union Pines at 6 p.m.

The third place game will be played Friday at 6 p.m., with the championship game set for 8.

The Whiteville High girls team now has a 7-1 record following Tuesday night’s 69-60 loss to East Bladen. It was their first regular-season loss since the 2004-05 season.

Both Whiteville High boys and girls teams have played in the Robeson County Shoot-Out Tournament the past several years, but WHS decided not to return to that tournament this year.

The WHS girls squad won the Robeson County Shoot-Out championship in each of the last two years. Last season, the Lady Wolfpack posted a 25-1 record, while advancing to the state 2A semi-finals where it lost to eventual state champion Farmville Central in overtime.

The WHS boys team, which is off to a 2-6 start following Tuesday night’s 63-50 loss to East Bladen, will not be involved in holiday tournament action this year.
