All-County Football Dec. 28

Wilcox watch

The Seattle SuperSonics closed out a five-game NBA road trip with their fifth straiggt loss Monday night as thy dropped a double overtime decision to the Memphis Grizzlies. Former Whiteville High All-Stater Chris Wilcox scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds as the Sonics saw their season record dip to 10-16. Rashard Lewis scored 36 points for Seattle in the loss. The Sonics returned their homefloor Wednesday night where they entertained the Dallas Mavericks. Through 26 games, Wilcox has made 25 starts and is averaging 12 points and eight rebounds per outing. Wilcox paced the WHS basketball team to the 1999 state championship and went on to the University of Maryland where he helped lead the Terrapins to the 2002 NCAA championship.

The Whiteville High boys basketball takes a 71-59 victory over Lumberton in the semi-finals of the Robeson County Shoot-Out at UNC-Pembroke’s Jones Athletic Center. Joseph Thompson scores 18 points to lead the Wolfpack while John Gardner and Doug Sinkler score 14 each. The following night, Coach Glenn McKoy’s Wolfpack thumps Scotland County 80-67 for the tournament championship. Gardner emerges as tournament’s MVP while Thompson, Sinkler and Clark are also selected to the All-Tournament team.
