Lady Wolfpack closes regular season
at 20-0; WHS boys take runnerup spot

VINEGAR HILL – For the first time since 1984, the Whiteville High School girls basketball team completed its regular-season schedule with an unbeaten record as the Lady Wolfpack defeated the host South Columbus Lady Stallion 53-42 Friday night.

Whiteville, whose 20-0 record includes a 12-0 finish in Waccamaw Conference play, got 30 points from senior Shannon McCallum, who surpassed the WHS career scoring record set by Phyllis Edwards, who was a senior on the 1984 WHS team.

Edwards, who went to play at Wake Forest, had 1,614 points in her four years as a starter at WHS. McCallum scored her 1,615th point on a two-point field goal in the third quarter Friday to break the record.

WHS coach Keith Jordan called two consecutive time-outs for his team and supporters to recognize and celebrate the accomplishment.

“I was a year behind Phyllis Edwards (at Whiteville High),” Jordan said, “and I remember what great a player she was … she could do it all. Shannon is much the same type player and seeing her get the record tonight is really something special.”

Whiteville, which led 32-15 at halftime, also got a 13-point effort from Talena Faison.

South Columbus, which closed regular season with a 3-9 conference record and a 5-16 overall mark, was led by Web Graham’s 17 points.

Whiteville took the boys game 79-59 behind the dead-eye shooting of senior guard Marcel Williams. Williams connected on 8 of 13 attempts from past the 3-point arc and finished with 29 points. Senior center D.J. Anders scored a game-high 22 points and junior guard Kevin Grant gave out 15 assists as the Wolfpack finished runnerup in the Waccamaw Conference boys race at 8-4. For the season, Coach Glenn McKoy’s Wolfpack is 12-8.

Derrick Clay led South Columbus scorers with 18 points, followed by Bryant Edwards with 14 and Sam Fipps with 12.

Whiteville led 47-30 at the half en route to its fourth straight win.

South Columbus slipped to 3-9 in conference and 7-14 overall.

“South Columbus has played real well on their homecourt this season,” Coach McKoy said. “That was a big concern of ours coming on but we got things going pretty well early in the game behind Williams’ shooting.

“We shot very well as a team tonight and that helped make a pretty big difference tonight,” McKoy added.
