It’s still two weeks until candidates can begin filing for the May primaries and general elections for judgeships, but there’s been a flurry of announcements already.
The most interesting races will be for three county commissioners’ seats. Kip Godwin has announced he will not seek re-election in District 6, and two candidates have already thrown their hats in the ring for Godwin’s seat. David Dutton’s seat and Amon McKenzie’s seat are also up for election.
Many residents have complained in the past few years about county government, especially about the water district taxes, so it will be interesting to see how many people actually put their money with their mouths are and file.
Sen. R.C. Soles’ and Rep. Dewey Hill’s seats are up for election, as they are every two years. Soles will have a Republican challenger from Brunswick County in the fall.
Superior Court Judge Bill Gore of Columbus County is seeking high office -- the N.C. Supreme Court.
Local resident and Robeson County Assistant D.A. Alexis Prease has announced for the District Attorney’s post against Rex Gore, who is the longest serving DA for this district since before Lee J. Greer.
So if the last two weeks are any indication, this year’s election may evolve into the kind of robust campaigning that keeps democracies alive.
Let’s hope good candidates continue to file.
