OBITUARIES
CARL SIMMONS
Veteran and insurance agent

CHADBOURN – Carl Simmons, 79, of the Beaverdam community, died Sunday, Jan. 29, 2006 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington.

He was born in Col-umbus County, the son of the late Charlie and Bertha McPherson Simmons. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, and an insurance agent.

Final rites were held Tuesday, Jan. 31 at Beaverdam Freewill Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Jackie Godwin. Interment followed in the McPherson Cemetery in Chadbourn. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.

He is survived by his wife, Betty S. Simmons of the home; a daughter, Tissy Conner of Chadbourn; a son, Pete Buffkin of Chadbourn; a brother, Paul Simmons of Chadbourn; two sisters, Hazel Walker of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Marble Dudley of Chadbourn; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

 

DR. WILLIAM CASSIE MERCER JR.

FARMVILLE – Dr. William Cassie Mercer Jr., 80, passed away at home with his children by his side on Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2006.

The funeral was held Friday, Jan. 27 at the First Baptist Church of Farmville. Burial followed in Woodlawn Cemetery in Williamston.

Dr. Mercer, son of the late Dr. William Cassie and Grace Beasley Mercer, was a native of Williamston and longtime resident of Farmville. After graduating as president of student body at Williamston High School, he completed post-graduate studies at Virginia Episcopal School in Lynchburg, Va. He was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and completed additional post-graduate studies at Wake Forest University. In addition, he received his Doctorate of Dental Science (DDS) degree from the University of Tennessee at Memphis in 1957. He was a World War II veteran, having proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps.

Dr. Mercer practiced dentistry in both Farmville and Greenville for more than 48 years and was a member of the Eastern NC Dental Society. He was also a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Farmville, where he had served as a Sunday School teacher.

Dr. Mercer was an avid reader who was passionate about war and history. He shared his love for cooking with friends and neighbors. He was also an accomplished woodworker and artist, having recently completed his last work, an oil portrait, in June 2005.

In addition to his parents, Dr. Mercer was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Sue Dilda Mercer.

He is survived by his sons, Daniel Britton Mercer and William Stuart Mercer, both of Farmville; daughter, Evelyn Caroline Mercer of Raleigh; sister, Nancy Mercer Smith of Whiteville; special nephews, Edward Lewis Smith of San Antonio, Texas, William Mercer Smith of New York and Robert Beasley Smith of Sumter, S.C.; special nieces, Nan Smith Yates of High Point and Betty Grace Smith of Charlotte.

LEO ‘SONNY BOY’ DANIELS

TABOR CITY – Leo “Sonny Boy” Daniels, 73, of the Dothan community, died Sunday, Jan. 29, 2006 at Loris Community Hospital. He is preceded in death by his wife, Lorene and a daughter, JoAnn.

Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2 at Deliverance Prayer Temple Church in Loris, S.C. with Pastor Louvenior Dewitt delivering the eulogy. Burial will follow in the Butler Cemetery in Dothan. Westside Funeral Home of Tabor City is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his children, S.G. Daniels, Mary Lou Long, Olivia Pierce, Ryndia Leo Daniels, Earl Lee Daniels, Equilla Long, Ariel Daniels, Loretta Daniels and Foster Bellamy; a granddaughter, and a brother and sister.

 

CLARENCE R. HALL

RIEGELWOOD -- Clarence Richardson “Buddy Son” Hall, 85, died Friday, Jan. 27, 2006 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington.

He was born Feb. 10, 1920 in Brunswick County. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice Hall in October, 1993.

Final rites will be conducted at noon Friday, Feb. 3 at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Riegelwood. Interment will follow in the Mt. Zion Cemetery. Dunn Funeral Home of Burgaw is handling the arrangements.

He is survived by two daughters, Barbara H. Brown and Gwendolyn H. Brown; three sons, Clarence A. Hall, Zannie L. Hall, and John A. Hall; four sisters, Dollie Delgardo, Addie Myers, Mary McKinnon, and Theadosha Green; five brothers, Earnest Mosley, Wilbert Mosley, James Earl Mosley, Kenneth Mosley, and Larry Cooper; 10 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends and relatives Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Mt. Calvary A.M.E. Church in Navassa.

 

RUDOLPH DANIELS JR.

WARICK, R.I. – Rudolph Daniels Jr., 66, formerly of East Arcadia community of Riegelwood, died Friday, Jan. 27, 2006 at his residence.

Final rites were held Thursday, Feb. 2 from Bell Funeral Home in Providence, R.I. Burial followed in Swan Point Cemetery in Providence, R.I. Smith Funeral Home of Whiteville is announcing for the family.

Survivors include his wife, Novella Daniels of the home; four children, Minnie and Gwendolyn Daniels of East Providence, R.I., Curtis Daniels of Coventry, R.I., and Michael Daniels of West Warwick, R.I.; two step-daughters, Roxanne Pettiway of Cransten, R.I., and Cristal Jones of East Providence, R.I.; five brothers, Al Theodore Daniels of Riegelwood; George Franklin Daniels of Providence, R.I., Benjamin Daniels of New Haven, Conn., John Daniels of Washington D.C., and Moses McLaurin of Elizabethtown; two sisters, Floria Stevenson of Columbia, S.C., and Minnie McLean of Brooklyn, N.Y., and seven grandchildren.

 

DARRYL G. LACEWELL

RIEGELWOOD – Darryl Glenn Lacewell, 49, died Monday, Jan. 30, 2006 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4 at Pleasant Union Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Smith Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

He is survived by his mother, Minnie Graham Lacewell; two brothers, Sam Lacewell, and Larry Lacewell; three sisters, Dersey Lacewell, Annie Lacewell, and Delisa L. Graham.

A wake will be held on Friday, Feb. 3 from 6-8 p.m. at Pleasant Union Missionary Baptist Church in Riegelwood.

 

RALPH BRUCE SMITH

WHITEVILLE – Ralph Bruce Smith, 81, died Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare.

Smith was the son of the late Robert Bruce Smith and Elizabeth Walker. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Margaret S. Waldron, Mary Elizabeth Hammonds, Virginia S. Soles, Martha S. Thompson and Dorothy S. Wayne and three brothers, George D. Smith, Ottis W. Smith and Robert Franklin Smith.

Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 3 at McKenzie Mortuary Chapel the Rev. Ray Yow will officiate. Burial will follow in the Smith Family Cemetery. McKenzie Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Smith is survived by several nieces and nephews; great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nephews.

Visitation will be Thursday, Feb. 2 at the funeral home from 7-9 p.m.

 

ZACHARY M. SCHMITT

WHITEVILLE – Zachary Mendel Schmitt, baby boy died Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare. He was the son of Alfred M. Schmitt and Robin Nanette Worley Schmitt.

A private services will be held at a later date. McKenzie Funeral Home is announcing for the family.

Survivors include, a brother, Eddie Benton of Whiteville; three sisters, Ashlee Clement, Kayla Clewis, and Molly Clement, all of Whiteville; maternal grandparents, Ed and Barbara Worley of Whiteville; and paternal grandmother, Loretta Burton of Whiteville; and maternal great-grandmother, Lizzie Mae Worley of Whiteville.

WHITEVILLE – Donald Francis Hilburn, 62, died Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare.

BOLTON – James Theodore Bowen Jr., 43, died Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2006 at Grand Strand General Hospital in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

MILDRED C. SHAW

EVERGREEN – Mildred Gray Cain Shaw, 74, died Monday, Jan. 30, 2006 at her residence. She was the daughter of the late Lennon and Ada Cain and the widow of Truitt Shaw.

Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2 at Evergreen Baptist Church with the Rev. Ricky Donaldson officiating. Interment will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include a daughter, Faye S. Britt of Lumberton; a son, James T. Shaw of Evergreen; a sister, Emma Lou Dowless of Dublin; two brothers, L.D. Cain Jr. of Matthews and Franklin Cain of Dublin; three grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.

 

RICHARD C. PENNY
Veteran

WHITEVILLE – Richard Crowell Penny, 85, died Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2006 at Cypress Pointe Rehabilitation & Healthcare Centre in Wilmington.

He was the son of the late Frank and Addie Ray Penny and husband of the late Elizabeth Godwin Penny.

Penny was a World War II veteran serving in the U.S. Army. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart Medal and served in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe.

Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 3 at Beaverdam Free Will Baptist Church with the Rev. Jackie Godwin officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Tabor City. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include a daughter, Catherine Elizabeth Tilghman; two sons, Houston Penny of Chadbourn, and Mitchell Penny; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson.

Visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2 at the funeral home.

 

MOTHER HALLIE ROSE POWELL

WHITEVILLE – Mother Hallie Rose Powell, 97, died Saturday, Jan. 28, 2006. She was a homemaker.

Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4 at Welches Creek Missionary Baptist Church in Whiteville. Pastor T.L. Chestnutt will deliver the eulogy, with burial to follow in the Welches Creek Cemetery. Union Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

She is survived by a son of the home, Charles (Gryer) Powell; a grandson and three granddaughters.

Viewing will be held on Friday, Feb. 3 from 1-6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m.-noon at the funeral home. The body will like in state one hour prior to the services.

 

ANILOU C. SCOTT
Retired from treasurers office

LAKE WACCAMAW – Anilou C. Scott, 89, died Thursday, Feb. 2, 2006. She was born Aug. 19, 1916 in Warwick, Va., the daughter of the late Edward T. and Sarah Kirby Crafford. She was the widow of the late W.R. Scott.

She retired from the Newport News Treasurers office in Newport News, Va.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Peacock’s Chapel In The Pines of Whiteville.

She is survived by two daughters, Joan Scott Layman and Barbara Scott Morrison, both of Lake Waccamaw, a sister, Lola B. Drewery of Newport News, Va.; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
