OBITUARIES
JAMES R. SHIPMAN
Retired from Navy and
asst. regional manager

CHAPEL HILL, Tenn. -- James R. “Bobby” Shipman, 81, died Sunday, Feb. 12, 2006 at his home after an extended illness.

Born July 25, 1924 in Columbus County, he was a son of the late William and Margaret Priest Shipman. He retired after 20 years of service in the United States Navy having served in both World War II and the Korean Conflict.

Shipman also retired as an assistant regional manager for the General Services Administration for the United States Federal Government. He was very active in the Walking Horse Industry having owned and showed many Walking Horses.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Annie Ruth Norton Shipman; a daughter; a sister, Virginia Tomaso; a brother, Elmer Shipman and by a grandson who was killed in 2004 while serving in Iraq.

Funeral services with full military honors were held Friday, Feb. 17 at McDougald Funeral Home with the Rev. Francis Shipman officiating. Burial followed with full military honors at Pate Cemetery. McDougald Funeral Home in Laurinburg handled the arrangements.

Survivors include his two daughters, Barbara Nunes of Chapel Hill, Tenn. and Mary Catherine Shipman of Vienna, Va.; a son, Clyde R. Shipman of New Bern; a sister, Dorothy Baldwin of Clarkton; two brothers, William Shipman of Grotten, Conn. and Rev. Francis Shipman of Timmonsville, S.C.; a grandson and four great-grandchildren.

TABOR CITY – Pink Edward Cogdell died Friday, Feb. 17, 2006.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Westside Funeral Home.

FAIR BLUFF – Sgt. Edward Lee “Kooky” Powell Jr., 40, died Sunday, Feb. 12, 2006 at McGuire Veterans Medical Center in Richmond, Va. He served in United States Army.

Final rites were held Saturday, Feb. 18 at Sandy Grove Baptist Church in Fair Bluff with the Pastors Thomas Register, presiding and John M. Powell delivering the eulogy. Burial followed in Butler Branch Church Cemetery in Fair Bluff. S&L Funeral Home of Fair Bluff handled the arrangements.

Survivors include his parents, Edward Lee Powell Sr. and Vonicile Powell; a son, Marcus Livingston of Cerro Gordo; three stepsons, Richard Bromell, Rostin Bromell, Lamont Goodman, all of Fair Bluff; a daughter, Katrina Powell of Miami, Fla.; three brothers, John M. Powell of Atlanta, Ga., Norman Dion Powell of Raleigh, James Jackson of Miami, Fla., and a adopted brother, Jerry Davis of Fair Bluff; four sisters, Sheryl LaFaye Smith of Florence, S.C., Vickie Powell-Cross and Amy Powell, both of Fair Bluff; a grandmother, Nonnie Powell of Fair Bluff; and five grandchildren.

 

MAYBELL W. SMITH
Homemaker

HALLSBORO – Maybell W. Smith, 102, died Friday, Feb. 17, 2006 at her residence. She was a homemaker.

Final rites will be held at noon Saturday, Feb. 25 at Mt. Hebron AME Zion Church by Dr. Staccato Powell. Burial will follow in the McNeil Chapel Cemetery in Longs, S.C. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include six daughters, Alice L. Smith of the home, Lula Mae Scott and Gail Grate, both of Longs, S.C., Lillie J. Powell and Melvina Boone, both of Hallsboro, and Margaret Ford of Garland; five sons, Marcellas Smith Jr. of the home, James Allen Smith and Ecclesiastes Burson Wilson, both of Longs, S.C., Willie J. Smith of Garland, and Edward A. Smith of Southern Pines.

Viewing will be Friday, Feb. 24 from noon until 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Viewing will be at the church Saturday following the service.

 

MILDRED H. JOHNSON
Housekeeper

FAIR BLUFF – Mildred H. Johnson, 79, died Thursday, Feb. 16, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare. She was a housekeeper.

Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21 at Butler Branch Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Ronald Alford officiating. Burial will follow in Butler Branch Cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include four daughters, Barbara Edge and Gerfel Miller, both of the home, Joyce Montgomery of Fair Bluff, and Bonnie Jean Wortham of Tabor City; six sons, Kenneth Johnson of Staten Island, N.Y., Troy Mitchell Johnson, Billy Johnson, Dale Johnson, George Johnson, and Ronnie Johnson, all of Fair Bluff; her mother, Gennetter Bullock of Fair Bluff; a sister, Louvenia McMillian of Fair Bluff; four brothers, A.J. Bullock, Henry Bullock, and Owen Berry Bullock, all of Fair Bluff, and Troy Bullock of New Jersey.

Viewing will be at the funeral home Monday, Feb. 20 from noon to 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 9 to 11 a.m. Viewing will be at the church Tuesday from noon to 1 p.m. and again following the service.

There will be a wake Monday, Feb. 20 from 7-8 p.m. at the funeral at which time Eastern Star rites will be performed.

 

QUITTIE C. MEARES JR.

and
a Mason

FRANKLINTON – Quittie C. Meares Jr., 59, died Friday, Feb. 17, 2006 at Duke Medical Center. He was born in Whiteville in 1946.

Meares was preceded in death by his parents, Quittie Sr. and Mary Jane Meares and a sister, Sondra Jordan.

He was employed by Daniel Construction Company for more than 20 years as well as INCO, Inc. as a Quality Control Welding Inspector. Meares was a 32nd Degree Mason with the Hiram Lodge #40 in Raleigh.

Memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22 at Montlawn Funeral Home Chapel, 2911 S. Wilmington St. in Raleigh. Burial will follow in the Montlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. Montlawn Funeral Home of Raleigh is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include a son, Christopher Scott Mears of Selma; a daughter, Angela Johnson of Clayton; and three grandchildren.

Family will receive friends and relatives at 6105 Malibu Dr. after the service. ALTHEA MAE BRISSON
Owned and operated rental cottages

DUBLIN – Althea Mae Brisson, 72, died Saturday, Feb. 18, 2006 at her residence. She was the daughter of the late Wilbur and Elizabeth Singletary. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Roger Singletary.

Brisson and her husband owned and operated Brisson Cottages at White Lake for 15 years.

Final rites will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 20 at Dublin First Baptist Church with the Reverends Cameron McGill and Warren Hill officiating. Burial will follow on Tuesday, Feb. 21 at 1 p.m. at Allen Cemetery in Dublin. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, Louis Brisson of the home; three sons, Donald Brisson of St. Pauls, Danny Brisson of Dublin, and David Brisson of Holden Beach; a brother, Nymph Singletary of Dublin; two sisters, Sarah Frances Taylor of Bladenboro, and Minnie Howie of Fayetteville; and six grandchildren.

The family will receive friends after the funeral at the church fellowship hall and at other times at the home.

JAMES E. WILLIAMS

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – James “J.” Edward Williams, 75, died Monday, Feb. 13, 2006 at Woodhull Hospital in Brooklyn. Williams was formerly from Chadbourn.

Final rites will be held Tuesday, Feb. 21 at 2 p.m. at Zion Wall Freewill Baptist Church in Chadbourn with the Elder Allen Livingston presiding and Bishop Rudolph Powell delivering the eulogy. Burial will follow at Belvue Cemetery in Chadbourn. S&L Funeral Home of Fair Bluff is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include four daughters, Debra Davis-James, Janice Williams, Mary Williams, and Sandra Johnson, all of Brooklyn, N.Y.; nine sons, Harold Williams, Charles Williams, Jeremy Williams, Jeremiah Williams, James Edward Williams Jr. II, and Melvin Williams, all of Brooklyn, N.Y.; Lendal Williams, and Jose Williams, both of Worchester, Mass., and Toney Williams of Franklin, Va.; three sisters, Agnes Brown, and Lena Williams, both of Chadbourn, and Elder Marie Williams of Whiteville; four brothers, Curtis Williams and Ernest Williams, both of Chadbourn, Herbert Somerset of New York, and Clarence Williams of Whiteville; 29 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandson.

Viewing will be from 8-9:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 20 at the funeral home.

The family will receive friends at the home of Agnes Brown, 108 W. Holland St., Chadbourn.

 

DELANE G. GARRELL

CHADBOURN  –  Delane Guyton Garrell, 41, of the Beaverdam community died Sunday, Feb. 19, 2006 in Duke Medical Center. She was born March 7, 1964 in Bladen County, the daughter of the Rev. John Guyton and Virginia McKee Guyton of Clarkton.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Peacock’s Chapel In The Pines in Whiteville.

Survivors include her husband, Timmy Ray Garrell; two daughters, Allison and Clarissa Garrell of the home; her parents, Rev. and Mrs. John Guyton of Clarkton; two brothers, Marshal and Dale Guyton of Clarkton.

 

ARTHUR S. DEES JR.

CHADBOURN  –  Arthur Simuel Dees Jr., 71, died Friday, Feb. 17, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare.

Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22 at  First Missionary Baptist Church in Chadbourn with the Rev. Jesse Peacock eulogizing. Burial will follow in Belvue Cemetery. Smith Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce McCoy Dees of the home; two children, Terence Dale Dees of Harrisburg, Pa., and Arthur Kevin Dees of Charlotte; four brothers, Carl F. Dees of Silver Springs, Md., Neil Delane Dees of Atlanta, Ga., Philip Randolph Dees of Seat Pleasant, Md., and Jose Gladstone Dees of Maryland.

Viewing will be on Tuesday, Feb. 21 from 2-7 p.m. at the funeral home and again on Wednesday one hour prior to the services at the church. There will be no viewing following the service.

 

JAMES R. WILLIAMS
Television repairman and veteran

NAKINA  –  James Rubert Williams, 66, died Saturday, Feb. 18, 2006 at Bladen County Hospital in Elizabethtown.

Williams was a television repairman and a

veteran of the United States Army serving in Vietnam.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Inman Funeral Home Chapel with interment to follow in the Williams Cemetery. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Hazel Cox Williams of the home; two sons, Timothy Fairfax and James Michael Williams, both of Nakina; two daughters, Nancy Ann Fairfax and Rebecca Ellen Williams, both of Nakina; his mother, Maebelle Williams of Nakina; a sister, Ruthene Stout of Nakina; a brother, John David Williams of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and three grandchildren.

Visitation will be Monday, Feb. 20 from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

 

THURMAN CARTRETTE
Retired from National Spinning

TABOR CITY –  Thurman “Jack” Cartrette, 70, died Sunday, Feb. 19, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare. He was the son of the late Clarence and Martha Richardson Cartrette.

Cartrette retired from National Spinning after 30 years in 1994.

Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22 at Beaverdam Original Freewill Baptist Church with the Rev. William Jackie Godwin officiating. Interment will follow in the McPherson Cemetery. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn I. Garrell Cartrette of the home; a son, Mickey Cartrette of Green Sea, S.C.; two daughters, Taffy Renee Cartrette and Kimberly Cartrette, both of Tabor City; two step-daughters, Karen Garrell Register of Whiteville and Glenda Garrell Elkins of Clarkton; a step-son, Darrell Garrell of Chadbourn; three sisters, Lucille C. Sellers of Whiteville, Cecil C. McCumbee of Tabor City, and Brenda C. Creech of Thomasville; two brothers, Jerry Fredrick Cartrette and Herman Allen “Joe” Cartrette, both of Whiteville; seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren, and five step-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. Monday, Feb. 20 at the funeral home.
