| Lady Wolfpack beats Pasquotank for sectional title; to open regional play Tuesday against First Flight
ELIZABETH CITY The unbeaten Whiteville Lady Wolfpack captured its second sectional basketball championship Friday in three years as it defeated the host Pasquotank Lady Panthers 60-50. Whiteville was led by senior Shannon McCallum’s 20 points. Sophomore Paige McCallum had 15 points and 13 rebounds. Junior Portia Baldwin added 14 for the Lady Wolfpack, which made the six-hour bus trip to Elizabeth City Friday for the Sectional 4 title game. Coach Keith Jordan’s Whiteville squad (24-0) will take on First Flight (23-6) of Kill Devil Hills in the Eastern N.C. 2A Regional Tournament Tuesday night at 7 at the Rose High School gym in Greenville. The winner will advance to Saturday’s Eastern N.C. 2A title game against the winner of Tuesday’s other semi-final between Farmville Central (21-3) and Eastern Guilford (22-5). The Eastern champion will advance to meet the Western champion in the state 2A championship game on March 11 at N.C. State University’s Reynolds Coliseum. Whiteville jumped to early leads of 13-3 and 19-7 before Pasquotank battled to within three points in the third quarter. However, Whiteville responded with a 20-2 run that led to a 51-35 lead with just under six minutes left in the game. Pasquotank, behind the play of Erica Rivera, closed to within eight in the final moments before Whiteville put the game away by hitting 6-of-8 foul shots. The final minute of play was marred by an altercation between Rivera and Whiteville’s Karena Jordan after Rivera fouled Jordan. The two players were separated and both were ejected. Rivera scored 23 points to lead Pasquotank, which closed its season with a 21-5 record. Courtney Simpson and Dana Lewis each scored 12 points for the Lady Panthers, who won the Northeastern Coastal Conference championship. |
