TABOR CITY Pauline Granger Phipps, 76, died Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2006 in Bladen County Hospital in Elizabethtown. She was the daughter of the late Duke and Hollon Hewitt Granger and the widow of Rudolph Phipps.
Final rites were held Saturday, Feb. 4 at the Inman Chapel, conducted by Dr. David Coleman. Interment followed in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Tabor City. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.
She is survived by four sons, Herbert Rudolph Phipps Jr. and Terry Phipps, both of Tabor City, Roger E. Phipps of Tuscaloosa, Ala, and Michael Phipps of Goldsboro; 13 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

BOLTON James Theodore “Teddy” Bowen Jr., 43, died Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2006 at Loris Community Hospital in Loris, S.C.
He was employed at Dupont.
Final rites were held Saturday, Feb. 4 at the Church of God in Christ by Supt. Thomas A. Wiggins Jr. Burial followed in Restwell Cemetery #1. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.
Survivors include a son, Andre’ Mitchell of Bladenboro; his parents, James Theodore and Annie Marie Bowen of the home; two sisters, Thalia Bowen of Oakton, Va. and Flora Bowen of Laurel, Md.; two brothers, William Bowen of Durham, and Raymond Bowen of Leland.
CHAPEL HILL Thomas D. Higgins Jr., 88, died at Cedars DuBoise Health Center on Monday, Jan. 27, 2006. He was born on Nov. 14, 1917 in Clarksville, Tenn.
He graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1940, where he was a member of the football team and member of D.K.E. Fraternity.
Upon graduation he was commissioned as a lieutenant in the Army Corp where he served as a pilot. He served in the China, Burma India triangle where he flew the “Hump” during World War II. He was awarded the “Distinguished Flying Cross” and the “Presidential Unit Citation,” and he was honorably discharged as Captain in 1945.
At the end of the war he joined the Sun Oil Company where he worked until he retired as the president of Chester Realty Company, a Wholly owned subsidiary of the Sun Oil Company. Upon his retirement he moved to Chapel Hill.
A private memorial service was held for family and close friends in the ballroom at the Cedars Clubhouse on Sunday, Jan. 29. Meares Funeral Home of Fair Bluff handled the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Miden B. Higgins; a son, Thomas D. Higgins III; a daughter, Miden H. Meares; three grandchildren, Amy H. Hodges, Taylor B. Higgins and Carl “Whitten” Meares III.
WHITEVILLE Aline Reynolds, 79, died Thursday, Feb. 2, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare. She was the daughter of the late Alvie and Frostie Mae Rogers Ward and the widow of Thomas F. Reynolds.
Final rites were held Sunday, Feb. 5 at Lebanon Methodist Church, conducted by the Reverends Karl Zorowski and David Watts. Interment followed in Lebanon Cemetery in Whiteville. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.
She is survived by two daughters, Barbara Sellers and Linda Beck, both of Whiteville; three sons, Johnny Reynolds, Wayne Reynolds, and Mike Reynolds, all of Whiteville; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
TABOR CITY Angela “Ann” Worley Strickland, 49, of Sidney Cherry Grove Road, died Thursday, Feb. 2, 2006 at Columbus Regional Health-care in Whiteville.
Strickland was a member of Cherry Grove Baptist Church and had been employed by Branch Banking & Trust for more than 27 years. She was preceded in death by her father, Bardin Worley Sr. and a brother, Moody Bardin Worley Jr.
Final rites were held Sunday, Feb. 5 at Cherry Grove Baptist Church with the Reverends Josh Phillips and Vernon Williamson officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Meares Funeral Home of Fair Bluff handled the arrangements.
Survivors include her husband, Dennis Mitchell Strickland of the home; a son, Christopher Mitchell Strickland and his wife Jackie of Tabor City; her mother, Neta Mae Strickland Worley of Cerro Gordo; a sister, Judy Worley Williams of Cerro Gordo; two grandchildren, Gretta Strickland and Aubree Strickland.

TABOR CITY Patrick DeWayne Nayle, 30, died Saturday, Feb. 4, 2006 resulting from a car accident.

BLADENBORO David Allen, 73, died Saturday, Feb. 4, 2006 at Bladen County Hospital.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, Feb. 6 at Bladen Funeral Home conducted by Rev. John McPherson. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include three daughters, Phyliss Ann Christian and Nancy Mae Sampson, both of Bladenboro, and Betty Jo Allen of Florence, S.C.; five grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

CLARKTON Edna Mae Moore, 53, died Saturday, Feb. 4, 2006 at her residence. She was preceded by her parents, Luther and Hattie Blue, and a brother, Nathanial Blue.
Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8 at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Clarkton with the Rev. Grant Martin officiating. Burial will follow in Bladen Memorial Gardens in Elizabethtown. Gaskins Funeral Home of Clarkton is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include her husband, Albert Moore; a son, Albert Gregory Moore of Clarkton; two daughters, Shannon Moore of Clarkton, and Dolly Vanderball and husband Terry of Rowland; a brother, Luther Blue of Clarkton; six sisters, Doris Blue of Clarkton, Daphne Rhodie, Floris Blue, both of New York, Louvenia Berry of Michigan, Pearlene Sadler and husband William of Hope Mills, and Virginia Wheeler and husband Herbert of Fayetteville.

LAKE WACCAMAW Lettie “Gee” McGee Joyner, 76, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2006. She was born in Greensburg, Ky., the daughter of the late Omer and Minnie Martin Edwards. She was the widow of the late Oscar Lacks.
Joyner received her nursing degree in Kentucky and her anesthetist degree at Charlotte Memorial Hospital, Charlotte. She was employed with Columbus County Hospital for 12 years.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 6 at Peacock’s Columbus Memorial Park by the Rev. Ed Vogt. Peacock Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
She is survived by a son, Samuel Edward Lacks of Lake Waccamaw; a daughter, Denese Lacks Wong of Mary Esther, Fla.; a brother, Steve Edwards of Clinton; and three grandchildren.

LAKE WACCAMAW Anilou C. Scott, 89, formerly of Newport News, Va. died Thursday, Feb. 2, 2006. She was born Aug. 19, 1916 in Warwick, Va., the daughter of the late Edward T. and Sarah Kirby Crafford. She was the widow of the late W.R. Scott.
Mrs. Scott retired from the Newport News Treasurer’s office in Newport News, Va.
Final rites were held Saturday, Feb. 4 at Peacock’s Chapel In The Pines by the Rev. Vaughn Earl Hartsell. Interment followed in Peacock’s Columbus Memorial Park. Peacock Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Survivors include two daughters, Joan Scott Layman and husband, Harry; Barbara Scott Morrison and husband, Bill, all of Lake Waccamaw; a sister, Lola B. Drewery of Newport News, Va.; two grandchildren, Cathy Hobbs of Ararat, Va. and Mary Menzel of Whiteville; four great-grandchildren, Kayla Siebert, Terry Barnhill, Steven Barnhill and Hannah Hobbs.
