OBITUARIES
JAMES D. PARKER

ASH – James Dorsey Parker, 71, died Saturday, Feb. 4, 2006 in Duke Medical Center in Durham.

Parker was born on May 3, 1934 in Columbus County. He was the son of Estelle Suggs Parker and the late Arvin “Dutch” Parker. He was also predeceased by his wife, Inez Parker, in 2001.

Final rites were held Wednesday, Feb. 8 at the Brunswick Funeral Service Chapel. Burial followed in the Griffin Cemetery. Brunswick Funeral Service of Shallotte handled the arrangements.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his two sons, Danny H. Parker of Supply, and Jody D. Parker of Calabash; two daughters, Patricia Olney of Supply, and Pamela Rogers of Winnabow; two brothers, Charles W. Parker of Greensboro, and Arbie Parker of Old Dock; two sisters, Lorane Milligan and Marjorie Milligan, both of Ash; six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

 

VIRGIE D. SMITH

ASH – Virgie Estella Duncan Smith, 86, died Monday, Feb. 6, 2006 in Brunswick County Hospital in Supply. Born in Columbus County, the daughter of the late Alton and Lola Retha Long Duncan and the widow of James Adron Smith.

Final rites were held Wednesday, Feb. 8 at the Inman Chapel with interment in the Smith Cemetery at Longwood. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.

She is survived by two sons, Ellis Smith and Jim David Smith, both of Ash; five brothers, Charles Duncan and Homer Duncan, both of Wilmington; Tom Duncan of Nakina, Pete Duncan of Tabor City, and Jimmy Duncan of Salt Lake City, Utah; three grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

 

WILLIAM McALISTER JR.
Farmer

WHITEVILLE – William “Willis” McAlister Jr., 82, died Sunday, Feb. 5, 2006 at Columbus Regional Health-care. He was a farmer.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10 at Mill Branch Missionary Baptist Church by the Reverends Anthony Gause and James Smith. Burial will follow in the Cherry Grove Cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include a daughter, Dianne McAlister of Washington; two sisters, Blanche Degree and Sarah Thompson, both of Maryland.

Viewing will be at the funeral home Thursday, Feb. 9 from noon until 7 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. until noon. Viewing will be at the church Friday following the service.

Friends may visit the family at the home of Rose McCallister, 55 McCallister Drive in Whiteville.

 

MARIE F. STEPHENS

TABOR CITY – Marie Fowler Stephens, 79, died Monday, Feb. 6, 2006 in Loris Healthcare. She was born in Columbus County, the daughter of the late Seymour Lloyd Fowler and Margaret Armenda Fowler Fowler.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9 at Tabor City Baptist Church with Dr. David Coleman officiating. Interment will follow in Myrtle Green Cemetery in Tabor City. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City is handling the arrangements.

She is survived by her husband, Dewey Stephens of Tabor City; two sons, Wayne Hendrix and Randy Hendrix, both of Tabor City; a brother, John Fowler of Tabor City; six sisters, Betty Todd and Inez Grainger, both of Tabor City, Ruthene Housand of Nichols, S.C., Eulene Blanton of Columbia, S.C., Jo Ann Jacobs of Longs, S.C., and Christine Fowler of Loris, S.C.; three grandchildren, and a great-grandchild.

 

MARY S. FAULK

WHITEVILLE – Mary Stephens Faulk, 82, formerly of Chadbourn, died Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2006 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by S&L Funeral home of Fair Bluff.

The family will receive friends at the home of Henry Stephens, 209 West 5th Street in Tabor City.

 

DONALD F. HILBURN
Veteran

WHITEVILLE – Donald Francis Hilburn, 62, died Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2006 at Columbus Regional Health-care. He was the son of Katherine Perry Hilburn and the late Maurice Hilburn.

Hilburn served in the United States Navy and was a member of the Whiteville First Presbyterian Church.

Graveside services were held Friday, Feb. 3 at Whiteville Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Josh Bower officiating. McKenzie Mortuary of Whiteville handled the arrangements.

Survivors other than his mother include a brother, Maurice Hilburn of Seattle, Wash.

 

JOHN J. NOBLES

CERRO GORDO – John “Johnny” Joseph Nobles Jr., 42, died Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2006 at Kindred Hospital in Greensboro.

Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10 at China Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Thomas Fairfax officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his parents, Annette N. and John J. Nobles Sr. of the home; a brother, Ronald Dean Nobles of Cerro Gordo; paternal grandmother, Ila Mercer Nobles of Cerro Gordo.

Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9 at the funeral home.
