WHS teams belt
North Brunswick

Shannon McCallum played her final regular-season home game for the Whiteville High School girls basketball team Tuesday, scoring 21 points in a 73-49 Senior Night victory over North Brunswick.

Coach Keith Jordan’s Lady Wolfpack, the state’s top-ranked 2A team, has a 19-0 record and can record the first unbeaten WHS girls regular season since 1984 with a win over South Columbus Friday.

McCallum, who has been an All-State selection since her sophomore season, is now just 29 points short of the WHS girls career scoring record set by former WHS All-Stater Phyllis Edwards, who started four seasons before graduating in 1984 and went on to play for Wake Forest. McCallum has signed to play at the University of South Carolina.

Joining McCallum in double figures for the Lady Wolfpack was junior Talena Faison with 20. The Lady Wolfpack is 11-0 in Waccamaw Conference play.

The Lady Wolfpack led 35-25 at the half and pulled away in the final quarter with a 26-point surge.

Latoya Hines led North Brunswick with 16 points. The Lady Scorpions closed Waccamaw Conference play with a 7-5 record.

In the boys game, Glenn McKoy coached the final regular-season home game of his 27-year career with the Wolfpack and WHS came away with a 78-57 victory over the feisty Scorpion squad behind the 27-point output of senior Marcel Williams.

Whiteville opened the game with a 15-0 run and held a 36-16 halftime lead before North Brunswick came back with a 15-2 run to open the second half and cut the WHS lead to seven. Whiteville recovered to grab a 52-40 lead at the end of the third quarter and then went on a 17-5 surge to open the fourth quarter.

“We got too complacent early in the second half,” McKoy said. “We had the big lead and gave it up. Fortunately our guys stayed with it and played strong the last 10 minutes of the game.

“We weren’t as sharp as we needed to be tonight but we’ll take the win,” McKoy added.

Senior E.J. Shipman scored 14 points and senior D.J. Anders had nine points and 10 rebounds as the Wolfpack put its conference record at 8-4 and overall mark at 11-8.

Teron Cobb, who fueled the Scorpions’ comeback run with five 3-pointers, led North Brunswick with 17 points. Keyon Goodman had 13 before fouling out and Josh Balloon had 11.

North Brunswick, which was coming off conference victory over Trask, closed conference play with a 3-9 record.

Whiteville will close regular season play Friday at South Columbus.
