W.J. Long Sr. talks about his plans for rebuilding the Vineland Ice and Seafood business in Whiteville. After this shot was taken Long installed a roof, windows and doors on the Main Street landmark. Long has left the rustic brickwork in place and it is visible inside.

Prison construction, legal battles top 2005 stories

2005 was a tumultuous year for county government and county agencies. Murder numbers also set a record. That was the bad news, but the year also had its share of good news.

depleted

If the county needed emergency money in a hurry, its options would be limited because commissioners have depleted savings by $3.8 million over the last two years and drawn the fund balance down to the minimum required by law.

South Columbus High School senior Sam Fipps will join Whiteville High School senior Anne Powell in Wilmington next week for the first round of interviews for the John Motley Morehead Scholarship.


Fair Bluff school rebounds

Fair Bluff Elementary School doesn’t look like a school that was nearly shuttered one year ago for lack of students.


Linda Williamson Hays visits the Columbus County Tax Office Wednesday to pay her property taxes to clerk Marjorie Simmons. January 5 is the last day that payment can be made on current taxes without penalty and the office has been busy most of the week with residents, as Hays put it, “paying rent on what I own.”

Rush on to beat tax deadline

Today (Thursday) is the last day to pay property taxes without incurring interest penalties. Residents have been queuing up at the tax office all week to make payments and a crush of last-minute holdouts is expected today.
