With Derrel Powell scoring 26 points and Virgil Powell contributing 16, Coach Mark Carter’s Hallsboro High boys basketball team defeats Union 58-53 to win the East Waccamaw 2A Conference Tournament at the North Brunswick High gym at Leland. The conference tournament is held prior to the conference’s regular-season schedule. Union’s Norwood Faison hits a game-high 28 points. Hallsboro had advanced to the tournament finals with a 66-50 semifinal victory over South Brunswick. In Carter’s only year as HHS head coach, the 1979 Tigers finish runnerup to Tabor City in conference regular-season play but they bounce back to claim the district championship and advance to the state 2A tournament in Winston-Salem.
