OBITUARIES
CECIL STRICKLAND

TABOR CITY – Cecil Strickland, 56, died Friday, Jan. 13, 2006 at his residence. He was born in Columbus County, the son of Susie Boswell Strickland and the late Dennis Strickland.

Final rites were held Sunday, Jan. 15 at the Inman Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Hollon Norris. Burial followed in the Myrtle Green Cemetery in Tabor City. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.

He is survived by his wife, Hilda Strickland of the home; a son, Heath Strickland of Tabor City; two daughters, Paige Strickland of Tabor City, and Crystal McPherson and husband Dewayne of Tabor City; his mother, Susie B. Strickland of Cerro Gordo; two brothers, Billy Strickland of Cerro Gordo, Mitchell Strickland of Tabor City; four sisters, Peggy Dippell of Whiteville, Bonnie Worley, Linda Strickland and Tamie Williamson, all of Cerro Gordo; three grandchildren, Teg Ham-monds, Taylor Hammonds and Autumn Tyler.

Pallbearers were Dale Duncan, Ronnie Strickland, Scott Strickland, Kevin Worley, Craig Worley, Mark Strickland and Stacey Strickland. Mem-bers of Tabor City Fire Department were honorary pallbearers.

 

KATHLEEN HESTER
Deputy-Register of Deeds

ELIZABETHTOWN – Kathleen Hester, 82, died Friday, Jan. 13, 2006 at her residence. She was the widow of Edgar R. Hester.

She was Deputy-Register of Deeds for 33 years in Bladen County.

Graveside service was held Sunday, Jan. 15 at the Elizabethtown City Cemetery with Dr. David Elks officiating. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown handled the arrangements.

Survivors include a daughter, Deborah J. Hester of Elizabethtown, and a sister, Angelyn Ellis of Suffolk, Va.

 

FLORIE A. GRAHAM

RIEGELWOOD – Florie Aguster Graham, 88, of the East Arcadia community died Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2006 at Brunswick Cove Nursing Center at Winnabow.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 16 at Pleasant Union Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Ronnie Clarida officiating. Burial will follow in the Graham Chapel Cemetery. Smith Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include five sons, Thomas J. Graham of Riegelwood, Orenzo Graham of West Germany, James A. Graham of Wilmington, Samuel L. Graham of Riegelwood, and Edward Graham of Rex; three daughters, Lucille Duncan of Brooklyn, N.Y., Reather Graham of Riegelwood, and Sadie Law of Wilmington; two sisters, Callie Graham and Estelle Miller of Springfield, Mass.; two brothers, Junious Miller of Burbank, Calif., and Roger Miller of Springfield, Mass.

Viewing will be at the church from 1 p.m. until time of service.

 

LLOYD MARTIN
Retired lineman, veteran

WHITEVILLE – William Lloyd Martin, 72, died Friday, Jan. 13, 2006. He was born Oct. 23, 1933 in Columbus County, the son of the late Hallon C. and Annie Cook Martin.

He was a retired lineman, having worked with

Stackhouse. He was a veteran of the United States Army and served in the Army Reserve. He attended Peace Baptist Church.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17 at Peacock’s Chapel in the Pines by the Reverends Chip Hannah and Joseph Cartrette. Interment will be in Peacock’s Columbus Memorial Park. Peacock Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

He is survived by his wife, Allene Hayes Martin; three daughters, Annie Nance of Hallsboro, Mary Walker of Whiteville, and Samantha Tittle of Delco; a step-daughter, Faye Barnhill of Whiteville; three stepsons, Tom Hayes of Evergreen, Joe Hayes of Sanford, and Ernest Hayes of Cerro Gordo; four grandchildren, a great-grandchild, eight step-grandchildren, and two step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Annie C. Martin; their sons, Donald and Ronald Martin; four grandchildren and two brothers, John and H.J. Martin.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 16 at the funeral home.

 

GLADYS S. EDWARDS

WHITEVILLE – Gladys Shaw Edwards, 75, died Friday, Jan. 13, 2006 at the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Care Center in Wilmington.

Final rites were held Sunday, Jan. 15 from Central Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. David Flowers officiating. Burial followed in the Campground Cemetery. Smith Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, Oscar Edwards Jr., two daughters, Connie Young and Debbie Edwards, both of Newport News, Va.; a sister, Margaret S. Smith of Whiteville; and a brother, Armwood L. Shaw Sr. of Riegelwood.

 

FANNIE M. ROBINSON

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Fannie Mae Robinson, formerly of Bolton, died Saturday, Jan. 7, 2006 in New York.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17 at Walter’s Chapel AME Zion Church in Bolton with the Rev. Alfonzo Howard officiating. Burial will follow in Rest Well Cemetery in Bolton. Smith Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

She is survived by her husband, Joseph V. Robinson of New York; a son, Andre Robinson; three brothers, Lee Oliver Kinlaw, Nelson Kinlaw, and Michael Kinlaw Jr., all of Bolton; a sister, Violet Brown of New York.

 

WILLIAM S. ‘BILL’ WILKINS

TABOR CITY – William S. “Bill” Wilkins Jr., 57, died Thursday, Jan. 12, 2006 at his home in Whiteville. He is the son of the late William S. Wilkins Sr. and Annie Pearl Gore Wilkins.

Final rites were held Monday, Jan. 16 at the Inman Chapel by the Rev. David Benson. Burial followed in the Forest Lawn Cemetery. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.

Survivors include two sons, Willie and Dusty Wilkins, both of Whiteville; a grandson, William Bryan Wilkins and one granddaughter, Carrie-Ann Wilkins.

 

KENT BRYAN

WHITEVILLE – Kent Bryan, 57, died Friday, Jan. 13, 2006 in Wilmington. He was a member of Forest Lawn Baptist Church.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 16 at Inman Funeral Home Chapel with interment to follow in Myrtle Green Cemetery. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Jean Bryan of the home; a daughter, Christy B. Ward of Tabor City, his mother, Louise B. Shelton of Bladenboro; a granddaughter; two brothers, Dorsey Andrew Shelton of Bladenboro, and Billy Ray Shelton of Pinehurst; a sister, Pam Cassidy of Raleigh.

 

PREZEL GAUSE

TABOR CITY – Prezel Gause died Friday, Jan. 13, 2006 at Loris Community Hospital from an illness.

FAIR BLUFF – William B. Washington, 67, formerly of Council died at home on Saturday, Jan. 14, 2006.

WHITEVILLE – Infant Anthony Tyvail Nelson died Saturday, Jan. 14, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare.

S&L Funeral Home of Fair Bluff is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his parents, Shajwani McGee and Anthony Nelson.

 

ANNIE BELL SOLES

CHADBOURN – Annie Bell Soles, 83, died Saturday, Jan. 14, 2006 at her home. She was the widow of Pearlie Oscar Soles.

Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17 at the Inman Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Mitchell Soles Cemetery in Tabor City.

Survivors include two daughters, Ella Maiden of Chadbourn, and Rosa Hammond of Fair Bluff; two sons, Mitchell Soles of Clarendon, and Pearlie Soles of Chadbourn; a stepson, James Nobles of Tabor City; a sister, Mable Batten of Chadbourn; 12 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Monday from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

WHITEVILLE – Cecil Wharton, 92, died Sunday, Jan. 15, 2006 at Southeastern General Hospital in Lumberton.

CLARKTON – Laura Lacewell, 89, died Sunday, Jan. 15, 2006 at her residence.

TABOR CITY – Lynda Lou Pope Jones, 80, died Sunday, June 15, 2006 at Loris Hospital. She is the wife of the Rev. J.P. Jones.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18 at Tabor City Baptist Church. Inman Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, Jan. 17 from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

 

FRANCES B. BAILEY
School teacher and veteran

FLORENCE, S.C. – Frances Barringer Bailey, 85, died Saturday, Jan. 14, 2006 at her residence after an illness. She was the widow of William Elroy Bailey.

She was born in Concord, the daughter of the late

Lance Caldwell and Ethel Johnson Barringer. She graduated from UNC-Greensboro, and earned her masters degree from the UNC-Chapel Hill. She was also a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

Bailey was retired from Florence School District #1, where she had taught mathematics. She was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 16 at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Florence, S.C. Waters-Powell Funeral Home of Florence is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include her daughter, Abby Morris of Beaufort, S.C.; two sons, Wayne E. Bailey of Minneapolis, Minn., and Lance Bailey of Enterprise, Ore.; and three grandchildren.

RUYLAND LANIER DUDNEY
Retired police officer

FAIR BLUFF – Ruyland Lanier Dudney, 73, died Saturday, Jan. 14, 2006 at his residence.

He was born in Columbus County, the son of the late Maynard Norton Dudney and Celia Henrietta Nance. He was a retired police officer with the Fair Bluff Police Department and was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Dudney of Belgium; a sister, Hilda Beck of Manning, S.C; and a granddaughter, Ashlynn Carol Dudney of Whiteville.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18 at Hinson’s Crossroads Baptist Church with the Reverends Fred Senter, Billy Stines, Richard Robinson, Tim Pittman, and Dr. Ray Lundy will officiate. Burial will follow in the Powell Cemetery. Meares Funeral Home of Fair Bluff is handling the arrangements.

He is survived by his wife, Cathleen Turbeville Dudney of the home; five sons, Rodney Dudney and his wife Loretta of Dillon, S.C., Andy Dudney of Marion, S.C., Kent Dudney and his wife Judy of Clarendon, Mitcheal Dudney of the home, and Terry Dudney and his wife Vickie of Whiteville; three daughters, Pam Cartrette and her husband Dean of Tabor City, Sue Wilson and her husband Joseph “Crockette” of Cerro Gordo, and Patsy Brown and her husband Harley of Chadbourn; a brother, Claude Dudney of Aurora, Colo.; 16 grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and seven step-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Stevie Dudney, Trevor Dudney, Ricky Cartrette, Jamie Cartrette, Chris Chauncey, Matthew Brown, Phillip Brown, and Ethan Dudney. Honorary pallbearers will be Alex Bristow, Brian Altman, Adam Wilson, Ryan Dudney, Eric Dudney, and Jeremy Essens.

MICKEY RAY HAYES
Retired veteran

CERRO GORDO – Mickey Ray Hayes, 59, died Saturday, Jan. 14, 2006.

He was born in Columbus County the son of the

late Lonzie K. and Orlean B. Strickland Hayes. He retired from the United States Navy.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Meares Funeral Home of Fair Bluff.

He is survived by four brothers, William Hayes of Cerro Gordo, J.M. Hayes of Fayetteville, Norman Hayes of Brunswick, Ga., and Clemson Hayes of Center, Ala.; two sisters, Lillie Marie Fritts of Lexington, and Jill Couch of Fuquay Varina.
