Wolfpack romps past North

LELAND – Whiteville High School boys basketball Glenn McKoy made some line-up changes prior to his Wolfpack’s Friday night Waccamaw Conference game at North Brunswick.

The change showed some positive effects as the Wolfpack ran to a 79-49 victory over the Scorpions.

Also, the Whiteville girls squad continued its domination of conference teams by defeating the Lady Scorpions 65-49. Coach Keith Jordan’s Lady Wolfpack team is now 13-0, including a 5-0 conference record, and the top-ranked 2A girls team in the state.

Paige McCallum scored 17 points and Talena Faison had 12 for Whiteville.

Alexis Jenkins scored 18 points for North Brunswick, which now has a 3-3 record in conference play.

McKoy moved guard Chris Grant into a starting spot and elevated freshman Sprandon Mahoney to help the Wolfpack boys try to overcome some of the problems encountered in its 6-6 start.

Whiteville jumped to a 30-18 halftime lead behind Marcel Williams’ 18 points and a 17-point effort by Grant. Mahoney and Nur Abdullah each scored 12 points as the Wolfpack put its conference record at 3-2.

Williams connected on four 3-point shots for the Wolfpack, which had suffered an 11-point conference loss to Trask a week earlier. North Brunswick defeated Trask last Tuesday.

“We’ve had to sit some seniors but now is the time to go with what is best for the team, said McKoy, who is winding down a 27-year career as WHS head boys basketball coach this season. “Tonight showed that we might be making a few positive steps. We can’t any more slip-ups if we plan to do well the rest of the season.

“The key is cutting down on the turnovers,” McKoy said. “Turnovers have been the downfall in every one of our losses this season.”
