FAIR BLUFF Georgianna McCoy, 80, died Thursday, Dec. 29, 2005 at Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton.
Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 2 at Hickory Grove Baptist Church in Fair Bluff with the Rev. Ervin Harper officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. S&L Funeral Home of Fair Bluff is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include a daughter, J. Lillie Townsend of Orrum; a son, Elijah Jones of Chadbourn; and a adopted son, Robert Lee McCoy of Fair Bluff; and six grandchildren.
Family will receive friends at the home of Lillie Townsend, 1021 Dogwood Road, Orrum.
BLADENBORO Phillip N. Little, 66, died Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005 at Bladen County Hospital in Elizabethtown. He was the son of the late Spurgeon and Lucille Little.
Final rites were held Saturday, Dec. 31 at New Light Pentecostal Freewill Baptist Church in Bladenboro. Burial followed after the service. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown handled the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Emily H. Little; two sons, Phillip Eric Little and Ray Burney, both of Bladenboro; two daughters, Tammy Little of Clayton, and Kristin Little of Bladenboro; three brothers, Miles Dewey “Sonny Boy” Little of Clarkton, Barney Lee “Bay-Bay” Little of Bladenboro, and Greg Little of Fayetteville; two sisters, Betty Jean Betts of Nebraska, and Bonnie Faye Spell of Fayetteville; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
WHITEVILLE Elsie Batten Byrd, 76, died Friday, Dec. 23, 2005 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. She was the daughter of the late General Lee Batten and Lou Creech Batten and was preceded in death by brothers, Robert Batten, Henry Dan Batten and sisters, Rowena Batten and Rita Batten Riverbark.
She was a member of Hallsboro Baptist Church.
Final rites were held Tuesday, Dec. 27, at Hallsboro Baptist Church. The Reverends Dallas Byrd and Ralph Gore officiated. Burial followed in the Flynn Cemetery. McKenzie Mortuary handled the arrangements.
Survivors include her husband, Paul Reston Byrd of Whiteville; two daughters, Judy Byrd Young and husband Richard and Pam Byrd Lee and husband Lonnie, all of Whiteville; a son, Roger Byrd and wife Janice of Lake Waccamaw; five grandchildren, Paula Garrell and husband Bob, Ricky Young and wife Melissa, Chester Byrd and wife Glenda, Brandon Young, and Corey Lee; six great-grandchildren, Matthew Byrd, Heath Byrd, Hannah Garrell, Harlee Byrd, Brett Young, and Taylor Young.
ELIZABETHTOWN George Asbury Hammond, 91, formerly of Bladenboro died Saturday, Dec. 31, 2005 at Bladen County Hospital. He was predeceased by his parents, Ashbury and Daisy Hammond; his wife, Mae Belle Hammond; a son, Marvin Hammond; a brother, Wiley Hammond; and a sister, Naomi McLean.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 2 at Singletary Baptist Church with the Rev. Mitchell Nance officiating. Burial will follow at Guyton Cemetery. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include three sons, Clyde Elery Hammond of Fayetteville, George Elton Hammond of Bladenboro, and David Asbury Hammond of Lumberton; four daughters, Susie Rogers of Evergreen; Doris Horne of Lumberton, Ann Smith of Ammon, and Sondra Guyton of Elizabethtown; 17 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
WHITEVILLE Grenda Lee McCoy, 54, died Friday, Dec. 30, 2005 at Duke University Hospital in Durham.
Survivors include her husband, John McCoy of Whiteville; a daughter, Latonya Wright of Princeton, N.J.; five sisters, Cora Purdie of Norwalk, Conn, Elouise George, Verlene Oliver, both of Jersey City, N.J., Sharon Wright and Donna Wright, both of Whiteville; three brothers, Ralph Wright of Newark, N.J., James Wright of Jersey City, N.J., and Larice of Lillington.

NEW CARROLLTON, Md. Carl Wesley Floyd, 56, formerly of Whiteville, died Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2005 in Washington, D.C.
Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 6 at St. Martin’s Church, 1900 North Capitol Blvd., Washington, D.C. Frazier Funeral Home of Washington, D.C. is handling the service. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is announcing for the family.

CHADBOURN Lois Gray Williamson, 64, died Friday, Dec. 30, 2005 at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville.
She was a native of Robeson County and the daughter of the late Sam and Isla Mae Lane Gray.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3 at Living Word Church in Chadbourn with the Reverends Lee Roney and Willard McPherson officiating. Interment will follow in Chadbourn Memorial Cemetery. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.
She is survived by her husband, Dennis C. Williamson of the home; a daughter, Ila Ruth Ishak of Raleigh; four sons, Ray Keith Fields of Chadbourn, Donald Lynn Fields of Augusta, Ga., Samuel Guy Fields of Angier, and Ronnie Michael Fields of Whiteville; three sisters, Susan Parker of Evergreen, Dianne Johnson of Bladenboro, and Elizabeth Strange of Newport News, Va.; two brothers, Glenn Gray and Lewis Gray, both of Orrum; eight grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

WHITEVILLE Frances Mottinger Heath, 82, died Friday, Dec. 30, 2005 at Shoreland Health Care.
Heath was the daughter of the late Walter Theo Mottinger and Fannie Slade Smith. She as a member of Whiteville First Baptist Church and the Women Missionary Union. She was a retired nurse and attended the Protestant Episcopal Hospital School of Nursing in Philadelphia, Pa.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 2 at Whiteville First Baptist Church with the Rev. Kendall Cameron Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the Whiteville Memorial Cemetery. McKenzie Mortuary of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include two sons, David L Heath and wife, Linda of Whiteville and Robert B. Heath Jr. of Fairborn, Ohio; a sister, Betty M. Richardson of Rock Hill, S.C.; and two grandchildren, Casey Heath of Whiteville and Ashleigh Heath of Raleigh. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1998, Robert B. Heath Sr.

LORIS, S.C. Ronald “Ron” Gene Turbeville was born Dec. 31, 1954. He was predeceased by his parents, Broadus Turbeville and Sarah Turbeville Norris and stepson of William “Bill” Norris.
He was a registered nurse at Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton and owner of Turbeville Construction Company in Whiteville. Ron attended Tabor City Baptist Church. He was an avid fisherman and hunter.
Final rites were held Saturday, Dec. 31 at Peacock’s Chapel In The Pines by Dr. David Coleman of Tabor City Baptist Church. Music selections were by Teddy Bullard and Jenny Beattie. Peacock Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Jan Harwood Turbeville; a sister, Lynda Turbeville and husband, Samuel Gaskins of Sanford; a sister, Jeanette Fowler of Loris, S.C.; a brother, Stanley Turbeville and wife, Cherri of Jamestown; and several nieces and nephews including Chris Hayes of Raleigh, Megan Hayes, Aidan Walsh, and Brittany Hayes, Brett Harwood, Hannah Harwood, Whitney Harwood, and Jarmie Harwood, all of Whiteville, Abby Turbeville of Jamestown, Jeremy Strickland of Sanford, Shane Fowler of Limoges, France, and Wanda Strickland of Tabor City.
Serving as pallbearers were Jimmy Green, Jeremy Strickland, Greg Wade, Frank Blanton, Will Harwood and Brett Harwood. Honorary pallbearers were Joe Merritt, Chris Hayes, Daniel Spivey, Buddy Caines, Ken Boyd and Jimmy Allen.

WHITEVILLE Eston Frederick Hinson, 76, died Saturday, Dec. 31, 2005 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. He was born July 10, 1929 in Columbus County, the son of the late L.A. Hinson Sr. and Ellen Stephens Hinson.
He was owner and operator of Hinson Church Furniture for 54 years. He specialized in manufacturing church pews and furniture in 50 states. He also had a mission project of his own, donating pews to the Bahamas and Virgin Islands. He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church and served in the United States Navy.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3 at Peacock’s Chapel In The Pines by the Reverends Roy Walker and Thomas Perritt. Interment will be in Peacock’s Columbus Memorial Park. Peacock Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Reta Ellis Hinson; a son, Freddie Hinson and wife, Terry of Whiteville; two daughters, Freida H. Huffstetler and husband, Bobby of Whiteville, and Angie H. Mangum and husband, Marty of Greensboro; three sisters, Dorothy Rich of Brunswick, Lela Travis of Dillon, S.C., and Catherine Bennett of Lumberton; seven grandchildren, Mandy H. Smith and husband, Chris, Jamie Hinson and wife, Fontina, Robbie Huffstetler and wife, Rikki, Clay Huffstetler, Johlynn Harrelson, Jeffrey Hinson and Audrey Mangum; four great-grandchildren, Angelica and Savanna Hinson, Blake and Claire Smith. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda H. Harrelson.
Serving as pallbearers will be grandsons, Jamie and Jeffrey Hinson, Robbie and Clay Huffstetler, Chris Smith and friend, Mark Sellers. Honorary pallbearers will be members of New Hope Adult Men Sunday school class, employees of Hinson Church Furniture Company, John Mathews, Buddy Clemmons, Bobby Tyner, Timmy Hinson and Mike Willis.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 2 at the funeral home.

CARY -- John Meares, 94, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005. Meares was born in Columbus County, North Carolina on Jan. 24, 1911 to the late Rufus and Etta Meares.
He is survived by his three children, Joyce Meares Boddie of Atlanta, Ga., Carol Meares of Cary, and John M. Meares Jr. and wife, Marguerite of Wake Forest; three grandchildren, Blaire DeSantis and husband, Mark of Atlanta, Ga., Jacque Wismer and husband, Sam of Atlanta, Ga., and John Melvin Meares III and wife Sharon of Hickory; great - grandchildren, Tony, Nick, C.J., Kenzi, Meredith, Melissa, Amanda, Jeffrey, and Sarah; and one great-great-grandchild, Aedyn.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Docia; grandson, George Timothy Meares; and son-in-law, Jack Boddie.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 31, at First United Methodist Church of Cary, 117 S. Academy St., Cary. Entombment followed at Montlawn Memorial Park in Raleigh. Brown-Wynne Funeral Home of Cary handled the arrangements.
