Review: 2005 Columbus County sports

State championships in baseball at Waccamaw Academy have become an established part of the school’s late spring agenda.


The Waccamaw Academy baseball team grabbed its third straight NCISAA state 1A championship, defeating Lawrence Academy in the final at Whiteville’s Legion Stadium. It was the ninth state title since 1989 for Coach Robbie Allen’s Warriors

Whiteville High girls basketball standout Shannon McCallum had a strong junior season as she paced the Lady Wolfpack to a 23-2 record and the Waccamaw 2A Conference championship.

Jeremy Soles carries the football for the South Columbus Stallions, who won their seventh Waccamaw Conference championship in eight seasons while posting a 12-2 season record.

The West Columbus High baseball team won the 2005 Waccamaw 2A Conference regular-season and tournament championships. It marked the Vikings’ first conference baseball title since 1985 as well as their first 20-win season since 1979.
Whiteville Post 137 pitcher Chris Russell fires a no-hitter in an Area 2-West League playoff game with Fayetteville Post 4. Russell, who earned All-State honors while playing at West Columbus in the spring, is now playing for the Pfeiffer University baseball team.
