Prescription
drug abuse
increases

The illegal sale and use of prescription pain-killing drugs has reached epidemic proportions in Columbus County and is probably surpassing the use of crack cocaine, long considered the preferred method of getting an instant “high,” law enforcement officials say.


Three firms
eyeing county

Gov. Mike Easley is expected to announce soon that three new industries will locate in Columbus County, creating as many as 290 jobs.


Strickland to
seek seat as
commissioner

Howell Strickland, the fighting farmer from Fair Bluff who has taken an eminent domain case against Progress Energy to the state Supreme Court, announced last week that he would run for the Columbus County Board of Commissioners.

There was action last week in two legal proceedings, both involving the Columbus County Department of Social Services (DSS) and DSS Director Marva Scott.


Plant leaves legacy of violations

As tractor-trailers loaded with tons of wire-making equipment roll from Columbus County to Kentucky, they leave behind a French-based company with a long history of serious health and environmental violations.


This endangered whooping crane is wintering in a large field and wetland in Columbus County. Experts are keeping tabs on the giant crane, which apparently lost its way between Wisconson’s Necedah National Wildlife Refuge and the Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge in Florida. Once numbering in the thousands, there are but 330 wild whooping cranes left in the world. “He was beautiful coming in,” said Karen Elizabeth Eyerly, education coordinator for the N.C. Museum of Forestry. “They fly so differently than the other birds around here … I’m going to check on him every week or two.”
