Moore’s buzzer shot lifts Gators over Wolfpack

It came down to which team had the ball last, and fortunately for the East Columbus Gators, the ball was in the hands of junior guard Jerry Moore.

Whiteville’s Marcel Williams glides in for a layup in the Wolfpack’s Waccamaw Conference basketball game Friday with visiting East Columbus. Williams scored a game-high 27 points, including seven 3-point shots but East Columbus escaped with a 67-66 victory. Whiteville will play host to South Columbus tonight.

WHS girls win

The girls game was almost as exciting as the unbeaten Lady Wolfpack held off a huge ECHS upset bid 68-60.


Warriors fall at Homecoming

It was a tough night of Homecoming basketball for Waccamaw Academy Warriors as they dropped a pair of lopsided losses to Trinity Christian of Fayetteville Friday night.

West Columbus High School senior three-sport standout Zack Andrews signs a letter-of-intent to play baseball at Southeastern Community College next year. Andrews is the returning starter at catcher for the WCHS baseball team, which won the Waccamaw 2A Conference championship last spring. Andrews has also been a key player on the Viking football and basketball teams. Pictured with Andrews at last Wednesday’s signing are his parents (seated) Steven Andrews and Lynn Andrews and sister Anna. Standing, left to right, are WCHS principal Worley Edwards, Southeastern Community College baseball coach Joey Autry, WCHS head baseball coach and athletic director Ricky Young and WCHS assistant baseball coach Keith Ransom. Coach Autry said that Andrews is the first of what he hopes will be several current senior players on Columbus County school teams to sign with Southeastern for next season. Andrews played for the Whiteville Post 137 American Legion team this past summer. Southeastern, which will open its 2006 schedule on Feb. 6 with a doubleheader against the North Carolina Wesleyan junior varsity at Rocky Mount, is the a member of Region 10 of the National Junior College Athletic Association.

Vikes split with SB

The West Columbus boys defeated South Brunswick and the South Brunswick girls defeated WCHS in Friday’s non-conference basketball action at West Columbus.
