A.J. Barnhill signals a crane operator to raise a 263,000-pound railroad car filled with coal that derailed on Braswell Road in Chadbourn Tuesday. The 90-car train was traveling from Mullins to Conway, S.C. at about 5 mph when wheels from six of its rearward cars left the tracks. No one was injured, but the road was closed while workers repaired the tracks.

It’s possible within the next few months for some Columbus County residents to realize a substantial savings – perhaps $100 or more – on their fire insurance premiums because of a new certification concerning expanded coverage by some volunteer fire departments.

Lake Waccamaw State Park has increased its size by about 23 acres with the purchase of lands adjoining Big Creek reaching from its mouth to the state-owned game lands north of the lake and south of N.C. 214.

Lawrence dies Tues.

Chadbourn Town Councilman David Lawrence, a respected educator and former star athlete, died Tuesday at his home in Chadbourn after a long fight with prostate cancer.

Commissioner won’t seek re-election

Columbus County Commissioner Kipling Godwin announced Wednesday that he will not seek re-election to a second term in District 6. The announcement comes one week after Fair Bluff farmer Howell Strickland announced his candidacy.
