ELIZABETHTOWN Samuel S. Butler, 51, died Saturday, Jan. 21, 2006 at his residence.
Butler re-tired from the National
Guard in Bladen County with the rank of sergeant. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Wanda Butler.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26 at Lewis Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverends Jimmy Tatum and Russell Kinlaw Sr. officiating. Burial will follow in the Community Baptist Church Cemetery. Lewis Funeral Home of Bladenboro is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include two sons, Samuel Butler of Parkton, and Joshua Butler of Red Springs; four brothers, Barney Butler of Newport News, Va., Waitous Butler of Lumberton, Leston Butler of Parkton, and Donald Butler of Bladenboro; three sisters, Vonda Butler of Bladenboro, Sarah Meares of Boiling Spring Lakes, and Valeria Lupo of Whiteville.

ISABELL S. SWEPSON

BLADENBORO Isabell Singletary Swepson, 90, died Saturday, Jan. 21, 2006 at Southeastern Regional Medi-cal Center in Lumberton. She was a homemaker.
Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27 at Center Missionary Baptist Church with Dr. Russell Rogers officiating. Burial will follow in the Brooklyn Memorials Gardens. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville
Survivors include a daughter, Patricia McGee of Wilmington; two sons, Otto Leroy Swepson Jr. of Wilmington, and Charles E. Swepson of Bladenboro; a stepmother, Annie Singletary of Lumberton; a sister, Lydia Rogers of Elizabethtown; three brothers, Archie Singletary of Bladenboro, John Singletary, and Rayfield Singletary of Lumberton.
Viewing will be at the funeral home Thursday, Jan. 26 from noon until 8 p.m. and Friday from 9 to 11 a.m. Viewing will be at the church Friday following the service.
The family will receive friends Thursday, Jan. 26 from 7-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

LEWIS ‘MAC’ McCOY

THOMASVILLE Lewis “Mac” McCoy Jr., 74, died Monday, Jan. 23, 2006 at Britthaven of Davidson. McCoy was born Sept. 12, 1931 in Dillon County, S.C. the son of the late Odell and Minnie Williams.
He was married to Sallie Mae Williams McCoy, formerly of Chadbourn, who died Friday, Jan. 20, 2006. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Marie Williams.
McCoy was a former employee with Thomasville Furniture Industries and retired from Freeman Frames. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and attended Walters Grove Baptist Church until his health began to fail.
Final rites were held Wednesday, Jan. 25 at Family Funeral Care in Thomasville. Interment followed in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery.
Survivors include four sons, James Lewis McCoy of Asheboro, James David Mc-Coy, Tim McCoy, Charles “Chuck” McCoy, all of Thomasville; a half-sister, Blanche Barnes of Lum-berton; a brother, Pink McCoy of Greenville, S.C.; three half-brothers, Jessie Williams of Thomasville, Willie Williams and Wright Williams, both of Lumber-ton; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

BRONX, N.Y. Erskeine Ingraham, 89, died Saturday, Jan. 21, 2006 in New York.
Final rites will be held at noon on Friday, Jan. 27 from Unity Funeral Chapels, Inc., New York, N.Y. Burial will follow in Calverton National Cemetery in New York. Unity Funeral Chapels of New York is handling the arrangements. Smith Funeral Home of Whiteville is announcing for the family.
He is survived by his children, George Ingraham Sr. of Whiteville, Vance Ingraham of South Korea, and Beverly El-Amin of Baltimore, Md.; a sister, Hazel Foster of Bronx, N.Y.; grandchildren and great-grandchlidren.
Visitation will be on Thursday, Jan. 26 from 2-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
CHADBOURN Mary “Estella” McClellon, 94, died Saturday, Jan. 21, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare.
Final rites will be held Saturday, Jan. 28 at 2 p.m. at the S&L Funeral Home Chapel in Fair Bluff. Burial will follow in Belvue Cemetery in Chadbourn. S&L Funeral Home of Fair Bluff is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include two sisters, Lillie Flowers of Chadbourn, and Rosa Lee Reed of Washington, D.C.; two brothers, Ruben Jackson and Ernest McClellon, both of Washington, D.C.
Viewing will be held from 1-7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27 at the funeral home.
Family will receive friends at the home of Lillie Flower, 608 Grist Road, Chadbourn.
DAVID LAWRENCE
Town councilman, veteran, coach
and asst. principal
CHADBOURN David Lawrence was born April 21, 1948 to Horace and Mary Brinkley Lawrence. He passed on Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2006 at home.
David enrolled in first grade in 1954, the same year of the Supreme Court’s decision in the Brown vs. Topeka Board of Education. He would go on to graduate from West Columbus High School in 1966. He played in the band, sang in the choir and was MVP on his Rebel basketball team and was the first black to play in the N.C. East/West All-Star Basketball game.
David was recruited by legendary Coach Cotton Fitzsimmon to Moberly, Missouri and Manhattan, Kansas. He was a freshman starter for Fitzsimmon’s National Championship team in 1967 at Moberly Junior College and was named best defensive player on Kansas State University’s Big 8 Championship team in 1970.
David received his BS and Master’s Degree from Kansas State. He also received a Master’s in educational leadership from North Carolina Central University in Durham.
David earned his commission as an officer in the United States Army Reserves in 1973 and served for 16 years.
From 1970 through 1988, David was a basketball coach at the following institutions: Kansas State University, Jacksonville University, Pensicola Junior College, Tate High School, and Durham High School. In 1988, at Durham High School his team was PAC 6 Tournament Champions and he was named Durham City-County Prep Coach of the Year.
David has served as a Chadbourn Town Councilman for 10-years, and was Mayor Pro-Tem. He was president of North Carolina’s Black Elected Municipal officials for two years. He served two terms as a board member for North Carolina League of Municipalities.
For the past 16 years, David has been an educational administrator for Columbus County School System, his latest tenure as assistant principal at Williams Township School.
Final rites will be held Saturday, Jan. 28 at West Columbus High School, Cerro Gordo at 2 p.m. Burial will follow in Belvue Cemetery in Chadbourn. D&A Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrange-ments.
Survivors include his daughter, Tonia (Thomas) McDonald, four grandchildren, Darius, David, Emery, and Imani; three brothers, Roosevelt, William (Queen), Walter (Shirley); six sisters, Sarah Davis, Mary Jane Flowers, Ann Lawrence, Blanchie Frink, Patsy Lawrence, and Clara (Wayne) Dunn.
Visitation will be held Friday, Jan. 27 from noon until 5:30 p.m. at the funeral home and from 6-8 p.m. at First Missionary Baptist Church corner of Princess and South Wilkes Street, Chadbourn.

CRUSOE Jennifer N. Price, 29, died Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2006 at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Fla. She was born May 21, 1976 in Blooming Grove, Texas, the daughter of Linda Nicholson Huddlenston and the late Dan Nicholson.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by Peacock’s Chapel In The Pines of Whiteville.
Survivors include her husband, Rocky Price; a daughter, McKenzie Price of the home; a sister, Dana Nicholson of Blooming Grove, Texas; paternal grandmother, Ethelyne Nicholson of Blooming Grove, Texas; and step-father, Gary Huddleston of Mesquite, Texas.
