| Pack boys fall WHS girls top Pender to put season mark at 16-0 BURGAW The Whiteville High Lady Wolfpack took a giant step toward claiming their second straight Waccamaw Conference basketball championship Tuesday as it put together a strong second half to take a 65-55 road victory over Pender. Whiteville, the top ranked 2A team in the state, ran its conference record to 8-0 and season record to 16-0. Pender’s conference record is 6-2 with both losses coming to the Lady Wolfpack. The boys game was a different story as Pender ran to a 68-54 victory over the Wolfpack. The Whiteville boys had beaten the Patriots 79-58 in December. Coach Keith Jordan’s Whiteville girls trailed 16-11 after one quarter but scored 24 second-quarter points to tie the game at halftime 35-all. They finished the game off with 18 points in the final quarter. Senior Shannon McCallum scored a game-high 20 points while junior Talena Faison tallied 15. Sophomore Paige McCallum bucketed 13. Top scorers for Pender were Rosalind Newton with 17 points, Jaquetta Gresham with 15 and Janetta Robinson with 12. The Lady Patriots are coached by former East Columbus High boys coach Gary Battle. The Pender boys team grabbed the upper hand early, holding a 17-7 lead after one quarter and a 32-19 advantage at the half. Daniel Ivey had a huge night for the Patriots with 27 points and six rebounds. Dedric Stringfield had 13 points and six rebounds. Ray Hankins added 10 points. Whiteville, which was coming off a 37-point victory over South Columbus on Monday, was led in he scoring column by freshman Sprandon Mahoney, who had 19 points, including five 3-point goals. Marcel Williams had 10 points. The result left both teams with identical 4-4 conference records. The Whiteville boys mark now stands at 8-8. Whiteville will travel to play South Brunswick Friday and Pender will entertain North Brunswick. GIRLS GAME
