Last week’s announcement that the state will purchase of 23 acres of land along Big Creek at Lake Waccamaw, which includes 1,900 feet of lakefront property, is a welcome addition to the state park.
Several years ago, the owner intended to develop the tract of high land between Bella Coola Road and the lake. Plans included a full-service marina.
While the marina would have been convenient, it would have drastically changed the aura of Big Creek. Now it will remain the peaceful, tree-lined waterway that generations of people have enjoyed.
As southeastern North Carolina grows and the demand for waterfront property increases, there will be tremendous pressure to develop land around Lake Waccamaw.
No one wants to see Lake Waccamaw morph into the commercial entity that White Lake has become. The purchase was expensive -- $2 million -- but Big Creek is an important piece of the puzzle. We encourage supporters of the state park to continue to look for ways to add to the park’s acreage.
The state park ensures that large areas around the lake will never be developed. That’s a comforting thought for those who want to preserve the integrity of this gem.
