Wolfpack teams
dominate SBHS

BOILING SPRING LAKES – When the Whiteville High boys basketball team wins in the Waccamaw Conference, it wins big.

The Wolfpack, which is currently carrying a 5-4 record in conference play, has claimed all five wins by at least 21 points with three coming by 30 points or more. On Friday, the Wolfpack drilled the host South Brunswick Cougars 88-42.

It marked the Wolfpack’s 30th straight win over the Cougars as well as its 15th straight win on the SBHS homecourt.

Whiteville last lost to South Brunswick in the semi-finals of the 1993 Waccamaw Conference Tournament.

Whiteville, which led 51-23 at halftime, was once again paced in the scoring column by senior Marcel Williams, who finished with 19 points. Harrison Jordan tallied 14 while E.J. Shipman and Sprandon Mahoney each had 12. The win put the Wolfpack’s season record at 9-8. Wins in its final three games – Trask, North Brunswick and South Columbus - will secure the conference’s top state 2A playoff spot for Coach Glenn McKoy’s Wolfpack. The Wolfpack is vying for its 24th state playoff appearance in 25 years.

South Brunswick’s season record fell to 2-18, including 1-7 in conference play. Anthony Gilbert had 11 points for the Cougars, who figure to finish out of the state playoff picture for the 13th straight season.

Nine Whiteville players figured in the scoring in the girls game as the Lady Wolfpack stayed unbeaten with a 64-41 win over the SBHS girls.

The Lady Wolfpack win, along with Pender’s loss to East Columbus, wrapped up the Whiteville girls’ second straight Waccamaw Conference championship.

The WHS sister combination of Shannon and Paige McCallum again supplied much of the scoring punch as Shannon rang up 22 points and Paige hit for 15. Talena Faison followed with 13 for the Lady Wolfpack, who improved to 9-0 in conference and 17-0 for the season.

Talisha Green had 16 points for the South Brunswick girls, who suffered their sixth conference loss in seven games. Kat Adams contributed 10 points. The Lady Cougars have a conference record of 2-6.

Whiteville will play host to Trask on Tuesday.
