Backcourt battle
South Columbus sophomore point guard Bryant Edwards makes a cut toward the basket while being closely guarded by East Columbus standout Jerry Moore in Friday night’s Waccamaw 1A-2A Conference basketball game at South Columbus. East Columbus withstood a spirited second-half run by the Stallions to pull out a 61-53 victory and clinch its first-ever regular-season basketball conference championship. East Columbus holds a 9-0 record in Waccamaw Conference play while second place Trask holds a 5-3 mark. Coach Mark Bridgers’ East Columbus squad is riding an 11-game winning streak. One more conference victory will clinch the conference’s outright title as well as a top seeding in the state 1A playoffs.
