| SCHS boys take victory at Pender
BURGAW A field goal by Derrick Clay with six seconds left gave the South Columbus Stallions a 63-61 Waccamaw 1A-2A Conference basketball victory over the host Pender Patriots Friday night. It marked the first conference road victory for the Stallion boys basketball squad since the 2003-04 season. Center Sam Fipps scored 21 points for Coach Nathan Faulk’s SCHS squad, which put its conference record at 2-1 and season record at 5-4. Daryl Vereen, playing his first game since coming back from a football injury, had a big night by canning five 3-pointers for all 15 of his points. Clay finished with 11 points. The Stallions’ last Waccamaw Conference road win had come on January 16, 2004 when it they thumped South Brunswick 82-62 at Boiling Spring Lakes. Pender, which slipped to 1-3 in conference play, led 25-22 at the half and South Columbus led 44-42 after three quarters. Dedric Springfield led Patriot scorers with 19 points while Daniel Ivey had 16. Pender dominated the girls game 56-13. The Pender girls, coached by former East Columbus High boys coach Gary Battle, led 18-2 after one quarter and 28-7 at the half. Janetta Robinson scored 15 points while Muriel Seabrooks and Rosalind Newton each had 11 for the Lady Patriots. Lisa Holden led SCHS scorers with five points. The South Columbus girls are 0-3 in the conference. GIRLS GAME
