Gator boys nip Trask to keep league lead

ROCKY POINT – The East Columbus Gators recovered from a miserable third-quarter performance just in time for a 52-51 Waccamaw 1A Conference basketball victory over the host Trask Titans last Wednesday.

The win put the Gators’ conference record at 4-0 and it was the first conference loss for the Trask squad.

Coach Mark Bridgers’ Gators held a 30-20 halftime lead but Trask stormed back in the third quarter with a 19-6 run that gave the Titans a 39-36 advantage. East Columbus, behind the play of B.J. Patrick and Derrick Baldwin, battled back in the fourth quarter to salvage the win and put its season record at 9-5.

Patrick scored a team-high 12 points and Baldwin followed with 10.

Jamel Hicks popped in 22 points for Trask followed by Jamardan Myles with 14.

The East Columbus girls grabbed their 11th win of the season with a 72-34 romp over the Lady Titans.

Angelica Moore scored 16 points, Candra Powell had 15 and Jasmine Young tallied 14 for the Lady Gators, who are 3-1 in conference and 11-3 for the season. Coach Karlyn Stephens’ ECHS squad led 38-15 at halftime.

Tasha Boone scored 13 points for Trask.

East Columbus will play Tuesday night at Pender.
