King run seals Game 2 for Whiteville Post 137
Post 137 clinched Game 2 of the series Saturday night, topping Scotland Post 50 6-5 in a 10-inning thriller at Legion Stadium in Whiteville. Robbie Penny batted Jeremy King for the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the tenth inning. Starting pitcher Corey Blackwell kept a no-hitter alive through six innings for Post 137. Whiteville got things heated up in the bottom of the first inning when Dustin Proctor sailed a two-run home run over the wall, giving the team a 2-0 lead. The homer marked Proctor’s second of the series. He sent a pitch back over the fence in the ninth inning of Game 1 as well. Four innings would pass before either team struck again. Whiteville’s John David White singled in the sixth inning to bring in two runners, bringing the score to 4-0. But Scotland fired back in the top of the fifth inning, tying the score. Reliever Justin Creech pitched the remaining four innings for Post 137. The two teams traded runsWhiteville scored in the bottom of the eighth inning to nearly seal the game at 5-4, but Scotland countered with a run of its own in the ninth. Whiteville couldn’t answer in the bottom of the ninth, sending the game into extra innings. A goose-egg from Scotland set up what ultimately would be the game-winning effort in the bottom of the tenth. With two outs on the board, King singled. Wild pitches saw King advance to second and then to third. Penny then drove King in with a single of his own, earning a win for Post 137. Proctor, Penny and King had two hits each. Other hitters for Post 137 included John David White, Creech, Ryan McCleney and DeMichael Smith. Creech picked up the win for Post 137.
